Book excerpt: To study the effect that the length of time involved in a social work education program had on the attitudes toward the poor of undergraduate social work majors, the relationship between (a) the number of semesters for which social work had been the students' major and (b) the scores of the students on a disguised structured attitude measuring instrument was tested using Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r̲). No significant relationship was found to exist between the length of time in the social work education program and the students' attitudes toward the poor. Although a review of the literature had revealed that most of the other studies in this area had involved graduate school populations, several auxilary findings of this study supported findings in some of those previous studies.

In a between-subjects design, the client's family income level and gender were manipulated. After reading the vignette, participants rated the client on 15 adjectives, and they responded to questions on the seriousness of the problem, their ability to help the client, and the prognosis. Factor analysis of the adjectives indicated that responding workers conceptualized the adolescent client primarily along two dimensions, which were named "self-centered and entitled" and "competent."

Book excerpt: This cross-national exploratory study examines the influence of social structure and educational level on the attitudes and beliefs of social work students. Respondents were students enrolled in a social work program in one of two countries, the United States and the Netherlands. A cross-sectional survey research design was used to elicit information regarding student attitudes and beliefs as they relate to poverty and affordable housing. Data was collected using three research instruments; these include a demographic survey, the Poverty and Housing Scale (PHS), and a second scale that was designed to measure beliefs regarding the causes of poverty (COP). The final sample consisted of 456 student responses. Three hypotheses were tested using independent samples t-tests and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Findings of this study indicate that while social work students from both countries had a more structural view of poverty and affordable housing, students from the Netherlands had a significantly more cultural/individualistic view when compared to students from the USA. These were not the anticipated results. There were no significant differences found when comparing the attitudes of graduate and undergraduate social work students. Structuration Theory (Giddens) is used as a conceptual foundation and in discussion of the results. Implications for social work education, policy, and practice are discussed. Future research is suggested.

The contributions to this book converge on a small number of core issues for contemporary social work. In so doing, this underscores that theory matters in social work.
