Book Synopsis Sidi Bou Sa'id, Tunisia by : Besim S. Hakim
Download or read book Sidi Bou Sa'id, Tunisia written by Besim S. Hakim and published by Emergentcity Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, profusely illustrated with original drawings and photographs, is an important case study of traditional towns and their processes of urbanization. Professor Besim Hakim undertook a landmark analysis of the village of Sidi Bou Sa'id located on the Mediterranean in northern Tunisia, working with a team of talented students. He notes that their findings echo recent scientific developments in the theory of complexity and the processes of emergence -- phenomena that can be observed and studied all around us in nature, and in social systems and urbanization processes. The case study demonstrates how a small village is in fact an outcome of similar processes, resulting in a well-ordered, high-quality built environment. This book offers important lessons for contemporary and future processes of building and urbanism.

Book Synopsis Becoming the ‘Abid by : Marta Scaglioni
Download or read book Becoming the ‘Abid written by Marta Scaglioni and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, after the popular uprising overthrew former President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, in Tunisia several issues came to the fore: among them, racism targeting “black” individuals. Few black rights associations emerged, and their struggle culminated in the promulgation of a law punishing racist acts and words in October 2019. The step is historical, and stems from Tunisia’s foreseeing policy concerning human and civil rights. In 1846, Tunisia was the first country to abolish slavery and the slave trade in the Ottoman Empire and in the Middle Eastern world. Becoming the ‘Abid addresses the issue of the legacy of slavery in a southern Tunisian governorate, where racism towards “black” individuals is still a painful experience and takes the form of professional, educational, and marital discrimination. Referring to the concept of “structural inequality”, the book goes beyond the simplistic idea that race is only related to phenotype, taking distance from the Western racial concepts, and highlights how processes of racialization are contextual, processual, and changing constructions.
Book Synopsis The Pure and Powerful by : Nadia Abu Zahra
Download or read book The Pure and Powerful written by Nadia Abu Zahra and published by Ithaca Press (GB). This book was released on 1997 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These anthropological studies focus on the performance of Islamic rituals, examining the beliefs and practices of the common Muslim. The book concentrates on the social life at the shrine of al-Sayyida Zaynab in Cairo. As granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad, al-Sayyida Zaynab is regarded by many as the patron saint of women. The book also includes studies on rain rituals in Tunisia, and the rituals performed during the month of Ramadan in Cairo. Throughout the work, the author seeks to break down the assumptions and stereotypes implicit in other studies on Muslim societies and provide us with a more accurate picture of how the Islamic tradition is developed and integrated within these societies.

Book Synopsis Rebel and Saint by : Julia A. Clancy-Smith
Download or read book Rebel and Saint written by Julia A. Clancy-Smith and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julia Clancy-Smith's unprecedented study brings us a remarkable view of North African history from the perspective of the North Africans themselves. Focusing on the religious beliefs and political actions of Muslim elites and their followers in Algeria and Tunisia, she provides a richly detailed analysis of resistance and accommodation to colonial rule. Clancy-Smith demonstrates the continuities between the eras of Turkish and French rule as well as the importance of regional ties among elite families in defining Saharan political cultures. She rejects the position that Algerians and Tunisians were invariably victims of western colonial aggression, arguing instead that Muslim notables understood the outside world and were quite capable of manipulating the massive changes occurring around them.
