Book excerpt: From data based on tenant reaction to services performed for it by members of the bureaucracy, Dr. Hassan moved the usual discussion away from what constitutes modernization to a consideration of the impact of this kind of change on the peoples involved. While his study is limited both in time and scope, it is valuable both for its focus and analysis. The paper is a revised version of the one presented at the conference. In this version, Dr. Hassan has responded to the criticism raised at the international meeting and has carried his analysis further than he did in the original version.

Book Synopsis Chinese Associations in Singapore Society by : Sharon A. Carstens
Download or read book Chinese Associations in Singapore Society written by Sharon A. Carstens and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1975 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese associations in Singapore are among the most numerous and heterogenous group of associations of any Chinese community in Southeast Asia. In 1972, over a third of the more than one thousand Chinese associations in Singapore were clan, district, and dialect associations(see Table 1). These groups, organized by surname or place of origin in China, are regarded by some Singaporeans as vestiges of traditional allegiances which will die along with the immigrants who originally used and supported them. Their supposed replacements, the occupational, athletic or cultural associations, are seen as 'modern' ways of uniting groups of people around mutual interests. The clan, district, and dialect associations are criticized for their clannishness and their ties with past traditions which are said to have no relevance for 'modern' Singapore society.
Book Synopsis The Ambiguity of Identity by : John R. Clammer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Straits Chinese (otherwise known as Babas or Peranakans) represent a unique blend of Chinese and Malay cultural traits and yet are quite distinct from both these two source cultures. Many rose to the positions of political and social prominence under British rule. The nature of this cultural and political accommodation and its dynamics provide an ideal ethnographic base for an exploration of ethnicity in Southeast Asia. This paper examines the nature of their identity and culture, the changes in the nature of the group and internal and external criteria for identification. The thesis is that the emergence of the Baba community is due to a combination of social and political factors, including the nurturing of a group willing to distinguish themselves from other Chinese migrants by learning English and acting as social and political brokers between the government and the population. Their position becomes ambiguous after 1942, with the decline of British influence. The writer's argument is that the outcome of this situation is not to be explained by factors of choice or perception but by structural factors. The paper concludes with an examination of these structural factors (including processes of accommodation, assimilation, and resignification) which have their roots in the colonial past of the area in the present management of ethnicity in Malaysia and Singapore.
