The Essay on The Use and Abuse of Museums has not before been published. It was chiefly written in 1881, for The Contemporary Review, but was laid aside from the pressure of other work, and I am unable to say the exact time at which it was finished. It still needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation The Reformation itself was, moreover, not the beginning but the culminating stage of a great movement, of which the new political life of Europe, the unlocking of strange continents, and the re vival of learning were all equally parts. Religious reform was not the blossoming but the fruitage of a general unfettering of the human mind. But as the mediatval social system attained its highest per fection in the medieval Church, so the break with mediaevalism reached its intensest point of contest in the rejection of the limitations which medieval ecclesiastical authority had imposed and hence the Reformation is the crowning episode in that strug gle for freedom of thought which preceded the struggle for freedom in political action, and which, however imperfectly fought out, was the great con tribution of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to human progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation: A Religious and Historical Sketch But the Reformation was primarily and above all a religious movement, and any estimate of it which disguises or misrepresents its religious significance must be imperfect or inadequate. If it has covered the whole field of human thought and action, the explanation is simple. In the Middle Ages the spiritual life and the ecclesiastical system of the Church were inextricably intertwined with every interest of Western Christendom from politics to art. It was impossible to touch a single stone of the vast and imposing structure without endangering the stability of the whole fabric. When the Reformers overthrew or undermined the power of the Medieval Church throughout a great part of Western Europe, it was inevitable that every department of human life should be directly or indirectly affected by the consequences of their victory. Art, literature, science, philosophy, education, law, political life, and social life were all cast into the potent crucible of change, and came forth largely altered or completely transformed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Reformers of the Reformed and Presbyterian Churches: A Mission Study Manual on the Reformation And if truth is never more potent than when it is seen incarnated in human life, surely the study of the great Reformers of the sixteenth century - the leaders in that wondrous anabasis that brought the Church out of her medieval tutelage into the spacious liberties of the modern era - will ever be an effective means for the deepening and enriching of our conception of what Christianity is and what it may become. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour, Social Reform and Democracy, Vol. 1 Hypocrisy are only equalled by the stupidity of the masses who believe them, that their only aim is the emancipation of labour and the introduction of an era of social equality and of true democracy. In the following pages I have made an attempt not only to give a sketch of the history of human social and economic suffering, but also to record the ideas on labour, social reform, and democracy propounded by the Apostles of Social Justice of all ages. The present volume brings up my sketch to the first centuries of the Christian era. The next volume will be devoted to the Middle Ages, the Reformation, the Renaissance, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the French Revolution, and the first half of the nineteenth cen tury. The cry for justice has been uttered by numerous sociologists and philosophers, poets and prophets, but I am making a distinction between the true and false prophets. With the latter I am but little concerned, leaving them to the judgment of history, but from the teaching of the former, the reader, as I hope, may derive some benefit, inspiration, and consolation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Reformation and Its Relation to Moral and Social Problems The last chapter may not appear to have a very direct connection with the other parts of the book, but, to the writer, it is perhaps the most important sec tion, dealing, as it does, with ideas and principles, the realisation of which must necessarily have a profound influence on the moral and religious thought of our time. What has been well termed The New Re formation - a phrase for which I am indebted to Mrs. Humphrey Ward - must include not only the inner religious life of man, it must include the whole of life; for religion, whether it take the form of art, or moral endeavour, or philosophic research, being the bed-rock on which the higher life of man is founded, if that foundation is in anywise altered, the whole structure must necessarily be affected by the change. It is recorded of Plotinus that he died with these words on his lips It has been my aim to bring the God which is in man into harmony with the God which is in the universe. This, too, is the aim of the New Reformation, and it is an aim which can only be realised by bringing the influence of religion to bear on the outer life - the life of the citizen, the workman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reformation Principles: Stated and Applied The Roman moralist, Terrence, said: I am a man, and nothing that concerns humanity is alien to my breast. The interests of the American people are hanging in the balance. The crisis in the conflict between the forces of good and evil in this land has come. And the parting sentiment of Horace Mann should ring out along the line: I beseech you to treasure up in your hearts these my parting words: Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity. Not long before the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomatox, Gen. Sheridan wrote his chief, Gen. Grant, If things are pushed we can soon run down the enemy. Gen. Grant re plied, with characteristic brevity, Push things, then. The National Reform Association proposes to push things until this nation is in allegiance with the Lord Jesus Christ. The movement is to be made all along the line. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Reformation This work has been published to meet a desire by some of the ministers of the Reformed Church for more material on the Reformed side of the Reformation, which they might use in the observance of the Quarto-centenary of the Reformation. We therefore give less space to the Lutheran side of the Reformation; especially as the material on that side of the Reformation is more abundant, and besides the Lutherans, to their credit be it said, have been exploiting Luther more than the Reformed have been doing for Zwingli or Calvin. Where we have treated of both sides of the Reformation, we have tried to give the Lutheran side fairly, but we have given the facts as they stand today. We have no desire to minimize Luther, but to give him all due credit for the greatness of his work. But Luther is not the whole of the Reformation and the Reformed should receive their fair recognition. We have also endeavored to utilize the latest discoveries in the history of the Reformation and also the latest publications of, and on, that period. This has placed somethings in a new light. The Reformed and Presbyterian Churches are especially interested in all this, as they have come directly from Zwingli through Calvin. And we trust that they will find this work helpful for the observance of this Anniversary. We only regret the shortness of time that we have had, in which to prepare it so as to get it out before 1917. And we regret our inability, on account of the war, to get to Zurich so as to get hold of more of the original sources, though our own large library on the Reformed Church of Switzerland has given much. That this book may have a share, however small, in making this Anniversary a great inspiration and blessing to our Churches is the wish of the author.
