Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of a Social Cognitive Theory based intervention designed to increase the frequency of leisure time planned moderate and vigorous physical exercise among high school students attending physical education class. This study was designed to be a pilot test of an educational curriculum therefore a Quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group research design was to be used. Students in each group were exposed to similar physical education curricula, however the experimental group students received an additional social cognitive theory based curricular component focused on behavioral skill building exercises. A Social Cognitive Theory based educational treatment was delivered. The primary research questions were evaluated through the use of a behavioral evaluation. This evaluation allowed for exploration of the effectiveness of the intervention with regard to moderate and vigorous physical exercise behavior. Secondary research questions were evaluated through the use of construct validity evaluation and implementation evaluation. Construct validity evaluation involved the use of impact evaluation methods to link intervention components with changes in the targeted theoretical constructs. Implementation evaluation was used to provide some assurance that the designed treatment was delivered to the subjects adequately. The results from this study indicate that the implemented Social Cognitive Theory based educational treatment had an impact on the student's levels of self-regulation and social situation as well as moderate physical exercise. The implemented Social Cognitive Theory based educational treatment did not however, have an impact upon students' levels of strength of self-efficacy, outcome expectancy values or vigorous physical exercise. This study provides information that adds to the body of literature pertaining to exercise promotion among adolescent high school students. This study was one of just a few projects attempting to target adolescent leisure time physical exercise using in-class methods. This study demonstrated an impact on two social cognitive theory constructs as well as moderate physical exercise behavior that is larger than previous studies published in the literature and demonstrated the value of continuing investigation of this curriculum.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a 12-week social cognitive theory (SCT) based intervention designed to influence targeted theoretical variables and subsequent changes in the physical activity of sedentary patients recovering from breast cancer. Seventy-four volunteers (intervention group n=36; control group n=38) were recruited by mass email and written letter solicitation. Subjects completed an online questionnaire measuring the social cognitive theory variables self-regulation, self-efficacy, outcome expectancy value and exercise role identity, as well as a 7-day physical activity recall at baseline, 6-weeks and 12-weeks. The intervention group received an email based on SCT. For six weeks the intervention group received weekly email messages and the following six weeks the participants received email messages every other week addressing specific SCT variables. The control group did not receive any information regarding the specific SCT variables, nor did they have access to an e-counselor. ANCOVAs were used to analyze differences between the control and intervention group at 6 and 12 weeks. Baseline measures were used as the covariate. Alpha level was set at 0.05 a priori. The results show the intervention was successful in increasing exercise role identity at 6- and 12-weeks, self-efficacy at 12-weeks, days of self-reported moderate physical activity at 12-weeks, days of self-reported vigorous physical activity at 6- and 12-weeks and total days of self-reported physical activity at 6- and 12-weeks. In addition, a mediating effect was found for self-efficacy at 12-weeks and exercise role identity at 6- and 12-weeks. There was not a significant difference between the groups for self-reported days of moderate physical activity at 6-weeks. In conclusion, e-communication is an effective method to acutely increase exercise role identity, exercise self-efficacy, self-reported days of moderate and vigorous physical activity as well as total days of self-reported physical activity. Furthermore, changes in exercise role identity and self-efficacy mediate physical activity. Further research should investigate how to maintain exercise role identity, self-efficacy and physical activity, along with the influence of other SCT variables.

In the wake of technological advancements, it has become necessary to promote physical activity in an innovative approach. To that end, this study aimed to investigate the effect of an application of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) under an eight-week electronic activity monitor system (EAMS)-based intervention on changes in physical activity (PA) as well as its associated SCT constructs of self-efficacy, social support and self-regulation for working adults in Hong Kong. A series of studies were performed: Study 1: In order to assess the validity of the step count output of two popular electronic activity monitor system (EAMS) model, Fitbit Charge HR and Xiaomi Mi Band 2, healthy adult (N=30) worn both EAMS and walked at five predetermined speeds on a treadmill. Two-factor (step x speed) repeated measures ANOVAs was performed to compare the output of devices with manual step count. Result: there was no significant mean difference (p> 0.05) in step count among the Fitbit Charge HR and Mi Band 2 activity monitors and the criterion in all treadmill speeds. Both of them are valid devices for step count in the laboratory setting. Study 2: As to assess the validity of step measurement of Mi Band 2 in the free-living environment, 31 healthy adults were invited for wearing both Mi Band 2 and ActiGraph GT9X Link on their dominant hands wrist for 7 consecutive days. Paired sample t-tests and Pearson correlation were conducted to compare the average steps per day between Mi Band 2 and ActiGraph GT9X Link. Result: there was no significant mean difference (p >0.05) and high positive correlation in step count between the Mi Band 2 and Actigraph. The Mi Band 2 is a valid device for step count in the free-living environment. Study 3: To examine the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of PA related self-efficacy, self-regulation and social support in Hong Kong Chinese adults. There were 230 healthy adults aged 19-63 years recruited. The factorial validity of the scales was assessed by the Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) while criterion validity was assessed by correlating measured constructs with self-reported PA. The internal consistency and scales test-retest reliability were evaluated by Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient, respectively. A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent comparison group research design was used. The Take Control intervention was based on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). Specifically the constructs of self-regulation, self-efficacy and social support were targeted. Participants in the Take Control intervention received at their home, a series of self-guided worksheets that were tailored to address a specific SCT construct. Both programs were a six-week, home-based intervention that was designed to increase days of moderate and vigorous activity among adults. Three evaluation techniques were utilized. The first evaluation technique, behavioral impact evaluation, analyses the impact the intervention had on days of physical activity. The second evaluation technique, construct validation of the treatment, links intervention components to changes in the targeted SCT constructs. The third evaluation technique, process evaluation, measures if the intervention was implemented as intended. The study revealed that both groups significantly improved days of physical activity from pretest to posttest. Of the three SCT constructs targeted, only self-regulation increased from pretest to posttest. This study adds to the body of literature. It one of the few home-based studies that implements theoretical constructs. This study also supports that a minimal contact home-based intervention can impact days of physical activity as well as self-regulation skills.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Regular physical activity plays an influential role on morbidity and mortality, particularly within the areas of obesity and cardiovascular disease prevention. The development of programs to increase physical activity levels has the potential to attenuate the health and economic burden that physical inactivity places on our nation. The purpose of the study was to conduct an impact evaluation of the Plan for Exercise, Plan for Health intervention. The physical education, health, and/or life-skills teachers from three high schools within the Appalachian region of Ohio implemented the 9-week physical activity curriculum as an integrated unit within their classes; a fourth school served as a comparison school. Multiple regression models were developed to determine whether the intervention could predict changes in the frequency of adolescent physical activity behavior, whether changes in the targeted SCT constructs contributed to the models, and whether changes in the constructs mediated changes in behavior. The intervention explained a greater portion of the variance in changes in moderate physical activity at two of the intervention schools (R2 = 0.353; R2 = 0.40) than the comparison school (R2 = 0.287) but a non-significant portion of the variance at the third intervention school (R2 = 0.136). Subgroup analysis indicated that the intervention was particularly effective at impacting moderate physical activity among previously inactive adolescents; descriptive statistics indicate an increase in the frequency of moderate physical activity and an increase in the SCT construct scores among intervention students. Regression models were able to explain 24 - 78% of the variance in changes in moderate physical activity within intervention schools. Self-regulation and social support contributed to the models and were found to mediate changes in moderate physical activity. There were no changes in the frequency of vigorous physical activity over the course of the study. Results support the efficacy of the Plan for Exercise, Plan for Health intervention at changing adolescent moderate physical activity, particularly among previously inactive students.

Book excerpt: This study tested an integrated social cognitive model of physical activity intention formation, onset, and maintenance among sedentary participants (N = 465) in a church-based, social cognitive, physical activity intervention. Three separate models were tested via structural equation modeling. Each model provided a good fit to the data. The models explained 28%, 19%, and 9% of the variance in intention formation, physical activity onset, and physical activity maintenance, respectively. Consistent with hypotheses, self-efficacy mediated the effect of positive outcome expectancy on behavioral intention, adoption of behavioral strategies mediated the effect of the intervention on physical activity onset, and maintenance of self-efficacy mediated the effect of the intervention on physical activity maintenance. Contrary to hypotheses, change in self-efficacy from baseline to post-assessment and perceived satisfaction with intervention outcomes did not have effects on physical activity onset or maintenance. The findings provide preliminary evidence that physical activity intention formation, onset, and maintenance are distinct processes driven by different determinants before, during, and following a social cognitive physical activity intervention.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Research from the CDC suggests that as of 2007 25.6% of the respondents to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey are insufficiently active (Galuska et al., 2008). This trend is repeated in firefighters and is of particular interest due to a high rate of deaths due to cardiovascular events in this profession. Inactivity is one of the major risk factors for the development of a number of chronic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and cardiovascular disease (Galuska et al., 2008). Because inactivity is a modifiable behavior, it is of utility to develop and implement interventions to increase exercise. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the impact on exercise participation of the 5-ALARM Fitness Program (Five Associated Lifestyle Attributes Regulating Motivation) in a sample of firefighters in suburbs of a large Midwestern Ohio city. A six-week intervention utilizing the theoretical tenets of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) was implemented in the firehouse during duty days. Exercise participation was measured by self report before the intervention, at the completion of the intervention, and two weeks following the intervention to determine if exercise increased in either the exercise prescription comparison group or the 5-ALARM Fitness group when compared to the usual care control group. Additionally, SCT constructs were measured (self-efficacy, self-regulation, and social support) to determine whether the intervention would increase the constructs. For minutes of moderate and vigorous exercise there was a significant increase in participation both at the six-week post-test and at the one month follow-up testing. There was no significant change in self-efficacy, and there was an increase, although insignificant, in self-regulation and social support. Book excerpt: Abstract: Research from the CDC suggests that as of 2007 25.6% of the respondents to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey are insufficiently active (Galuska et al., 2008). This trend is repeated in firefighters and is of particular interest due to a high rate of deaths due to cardiovascular events in this profession. Inactivity is one of the major risk factors for the development of a number of chronic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and cardiovascular disease (Galuska et al., 2008). Because inactivity is a modifiable behavior, it is of utility to develop and implement interventions to increase exercise. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the impact on exercise participation of the 5-ALARM Fitness Program (Five Associated Lifestyle Attributes Regulating Motivation) in a sample of firefighters in suburbs of a large Midwestern Ohio city. A six-week intervention utilizing the theoretical tenets of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) was implemented in the firehouse during duty days. Exercise participation was measured by self report before the intervention, at the completion of the intervention, and two weeks following the intervention to determine if exercise increased in either the exercise prescription comparison group or the 5-ALARM Fitness group when compared to the usual care control group. Additionally, SCT constructs were measured (self-efficacy, self-regulation, and social support) to determine whether the intervention would increase the constructs. For minutes of moderate and vigorous exercise there was a significant increase in participation both at the six-week post-test and at the one month follow-up testing. There was no significant change in self-efficacy, and there was an increase, although insignificant, in self-regulation and social support. Overall there is support that the intervention has an effect on increasing exercise participation, although there is not evidence that the intervention resulted in increases in the social cognitive theory constructs.
