Book excerpt: The present study investigated different facts on articulation based social stratification in Bangladesh. The use of trilled /r/ sound and flap / / sound conducted the contrasting measures of articulation within different social classes of Bangladesh. The social indexes were urbanization and literacy based. The indexes were Literate Urbanized Class, Urbanized Non- Literate Class, Literate Non-urbanized Class, Non-Literate Non-urbanized Class. Then task based interviews with eligible participants were completed to get the data for the findings of analysis. From the analyzed data, we establish the proposed hypothesizes are accepted. This study revealed, Urbanization is the prime determiner over literacy for articulating specific sound to markup the alternation of articulation. The pronunciation of flap / /and trilled /r/ in Bangla are differentiated with different social indexes, which are interrelated within urbanization and literacy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into social stratification and social divisions has always been a central component of sociological study. This volume brings together a range of thematically organised case-studies comprising empirical and methodological analyses addressing the challenges of studying trends and processes in social stratification. This collection has four themes. The first concerns the measurement of social stratification, since the problem of relating concepts, measurements and operationalizations continues to cause difficulties for sociological analysis. This book clarifies the appropriate deployment of existing measurement options, and presents new empirical strategies of measurement and interpretation. The conception of the life course and individual social biography is very popular in modern sociology. The second theme of this volume exploits the contemporary expansion of micro-level longitudinal data and the analytical approaches available to researchers to exploit such records. It comprises chapters which exemplify innovative empirical analysis of life-course processes in a longitudinal context, thus offering an advance on previous sociological accounts concerned with longitudinal trends and processes. The third theme of the book concerns the interrelationship between contemporary demographic, institutional and socioeconomic transformations and structures of social inequality. Although the role of wider social changes is rarely neglected in sociological reviews, such changes continue to raise analytical challenges for any assessment of empirical differences and trends. The fourth theme of the book discusses selected features of policy and political responses to social stratification. This volume will be of interest to students, academics and policy experts working in the field of social stratification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies postcolonial Bangladesh and shows how the state failed to create an industrial bourgeoisie class. The author explores concepts of the postcolonial state, colonialism during the British period, postcolonial Bangladesh under various regimes, the influences of democracy, and alternatives through which Bangladesh may become a civil society. This highly analytical and interpretive study offers a 'solution' to the problem by calling for a participatory development and abandoning the idea of modernity. A table of contents and a list of abbreviations make this book an especially thorough and pragmatic reference tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the twenty-first century, more than fifty per cent of the world's population will live in an urban environment. Most of this new urban growth will take place in Asia and Africa, yet most governments in these two continents seem woefully unprepared for the challenges they will face in providing their urban citizens with the basic services and security from poverty, environmental degradation and crime. It is in this context that in-depth studies which lay bare the contours and characteristics of society and institutions in the urban setting of Third World countries assume importance and urgency. Most studies on urbanisation in developing countries concentrate on slums and shanty towns in isolation from the rest of the society. By contrast, Social Formation in Dhaka, 1985-2005 analyses urbanisation and urban society in a holistic manner, connecting the poor with the non-poor and delineating the change agents of the city. As the first longitudinal study of the social structure of any Third World Megacity, this book will be of interest to urban sociologists, policy-makers, NGOS, and researchers engaged in understanding the development in cities in the global south.
