Book Synopsis Readings in the Sociology of Migration by : Clifford J. Jansen
Download or read book Readings in the Sociology of Migration written by Clifford J. Jansen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readings in the Sociology of Migration deals with migration as a sociological problem, with greater emphasis on internal migrations than on international migrations. Some of the problems covered by sociological inquiry in the study of migration are discussed, along with theories of migration such as the push-pull theory, differential migration, and motivation for migration. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and opens by outlining types of migration according to the professional and social composition of migrants: mass migration, economic migration from an underdeveloped country, economic emigration from an industrial country, and immigration into an industrial nation. A general typology of migration is then presented before the problem of migration in various countries such as Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the United States is considered. The final chapter presents preliminary findings from a demographic and socioeconomic sample survey of the population of the metropolitan area of San Salvador, El Salvador. This monograph will be a useful resource for sociologists and policymakers concerned with migration.

Book Synopsis Internal Migration as a Life-Course Trajectory by : Aude Bernard
Download or read book Internal Migration as a Life-Course Trajectory written by Aude Bernard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book responds to growing calls to conceptualise and analyse internal migration as a trajectory that unfolds over the life course of individuals rather than a series of discrete events. It combines macro and micro modes of analysis into a cohort framework to explore how individuals transition from one migration to the next. The book presents new methodological developments in longitudinal analysis and applies them to internal migration in 27 European countries. It demonstrates that the traditional dichotomy between migrants and non-migrants conceals a wide range of migration behaviour and heterogeneity among repeat migrants. It also reveals a continuity of migration behaviour: being exposed to the challenges and benefits of migration early in life predisposes individuals toward migration in adulthood. By adopting a cohort approach to migration coupled with state-of-the-art methods and novel concepts, this book provides new insights into internal migration for graduate students, academics and policymakers interested in understanding migration behaviour in Europe and beyond.

Book Synopsis Migration, Development and Social Change in the Himalayas by : Madleina Daehnhardt
Download or read book Migration, Development and Social Change in the Himalayas written by Madleina Daehnhardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book teases out the reasons for, and the socio-economic impacts of, different types of migration on contemporary rural households and individuals. The author creatively depicts the dynamic microcosm of one village in the North Indian Kumaun Himalayas, near the border with Chinese Tibet, giving voice to the life stories of a range of migrants. Through this ethnography, migration is revealed as a fundamental part of the multifaceted 21st-century changes which the village is experiencing. From elderly women, to unemployed men, young farm women and local children, the book demonstrates how village life is continually constituted socially and economically by overlapping migration patterns – including outmigration, return migration, in-migration and even non-migration. Extending the argument, the author demonstrates that the village microcosm is linked to many other villages which are microcosms in their own right as well as in relation to the main village across a spatial hierarchy. The theoretical implications of the study are teased out to inform our understanding of rural-urban migration trends and impacts more generally, and as such the book will be of interest to researchers of the South Asian region but also of internal migration in the global context.

Book Synopsis Migration: Volume 2, Sociological Studies by : J. A. Jackson
Download or read book Migration: Volume 2, Sociological Studies written by J. A. Jackson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1970 collection of specially commissioned papers develops the theory of both long- and short-distance migration. The movement of human population, which has always been an essential ingredient of social change, tended in the past to be considered primarily in terms of economic interest. It embraces, however, many complex aspects of human aspirations and changing circumstances that are developed in the initial decision to migrate taken in the community of origin and the process of adjustment and settlement in the community to which the migrant comes. The importance of the factors related to immigration, especially of those from widely differing national and racial groups, is very apparent in Britain and many other countries. These more widely dramatized migrations are part of a social process that has common features with the movement from country to town in the same country, and is closely related to changes in the family cycle, to social mobility and economic development.
Book Synopsis Internal Migration in the United States by : Raven S. Molloy
Download or read book Internal Migration in the United States written by Raven S. Molloy and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews patterns in migration within the U.S. over the past thirty years. Internal migration has fallen noticeably since the 1980s, reversing increases from earlier in the century. The decline in migration has been widespread across demographic and socioeconomic groups, as well as for moves of all distances. Although a convincing explanation for the secular decline in migration remains elusive and requires further research, the authors find only limited roles for the housing market contraction and the economic recession in reducing migration recently. Despite its downward trend, migration within the U.S. remains higher than that within most other developed countries. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.
