Book excerpt: The currency of social capital serves as an important function given the capacity to generate external access (getting to) and internal accountability (getting through) for individuals and institutions alike. Pierre Bourdieu (1986) defines social capital as “the aggregate of the actual or potential resources which are linked to possession of a durable network of more or less institutionalized relationships of mutual acquaintance and recognition or in other words, to membership in a group” (p. 251). Social capital contains embedded resources as a tool for manifesting opportunities and options among individuals and groups. Inevitably, the aforementioned opportunities and options become reflective of the depth and breadth of access and accountability experienced by the individual and institution. As educational stakeholders, we must consistently challenge ourselves with the question, “How do K-12 schools and colleges and universities accomplish shared, egalitarian goals of achieving access and accountability?” Such goals become fundamental toward ensuring students matriculating through K-12 and higher education, irrespective of background, are provided the caliber of education and schooling experience to prepare them for economic mobility and social stability. To that end, the volume, Contemporary Perspectives on Social Capital in Educational Contexts (2019), as part of the book series, Contemporary Perspectives on Capital in Educational Contexts, offers a unique opportunity to explore social capital as a currency conduit for creating external access and internal accountability for K-12 and higher education. Book excerpt: This research combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies to investigate the impact of community social capital on student achievement in rural high schools. Social capital is conceptualized as a resource implicit in the social relationships within families, communities, and other collectivities. It is built as actors engage in repeated interaction over time, in a manner that builds trust. Social capital is the commonly-held property of these collectivities because it does not exist apart from the social relationships which constitute them. An Ordinary Least Squares regression model is used to test the effect of secondary indicators of community social capital on mean tenth-grade composite achievement test scores for a sample of 241 rural Missouri high schools. The primary indicator of community social capital, student perceptions of community pride in the school, is the most significant predictor of average achievement scores, controlling for community socio-economic characteristics and school resource variables. Following a model used in school effectiveness research, two school districts with higher than predicted mean tenth-grade achievement scores and two with lower than predicted mean tenth-grade achievement scores are chosen for in-depth, case study research. Qualitative methods are used to explore in more detail the factors contributing to differing student achievement in these otherwise similar school districts. Differences are identified in the quality of school-community relationships as constituted by interpersonal networks between school personnel and community members, shared expectations for student behavior and achievement, and inter-organizational networks linking churches, civic clubs, and businesses with youth and the school. The major substantive implication drawn from the study is that schools do not exist as autonomous institutions, but are embedded in and penetrated by the communities in which they are situated. A related implication is that local school districts and policymakers need to more fully consider the impact of social relationships on the educational process. Stable relationships among students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other community members, built through repeated interaction in multiple settings over time, facilitate the development of trust and shared expectations between these actors, which impact student achievement.
