The book proposes a system in which social audit is regulated so as to provide a mechanism for effectively promoting corporate accountability in society. Taking this as its theme, this book provides both a conceptual explanation of the developmental perspectives of social audit regulation and empirical evidence of the impact of social audit practice from different parts of the world. It is the first book to explore the issues and challenges related to the development of effective social audit regulation.

Book excerpt: A participatory approach to codes of labour practice comes from a different perspective to more compliance focused "snapshot" social auditing. It puts greater emphasis on involvement of workers and workers' organisations in the process of code implementation and assessment. It is based on developing partnerships between different actors (companies, trade unions, NGOs and preferably government) in developing a locally sustainable approach to the improvement of working conditions. This approach is sensitive to uncovering and thus addressing more complex issues such as gender discrimination and sexual harassment. These are issues more likely to be experienced by insecure non-permanent workers, who are often women, whose voices "snapshot" audits usually fail to pick up. They are less "visible" issues, that are unlikely to be resolved through a simple compliance approach. The goal of a participatory approach is a process of awareness creation and improvement that is more gender sensitive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Enterprise is a worldwide movement of alternative organisational and business models, but it is sometimes difficult to know precisely the meaning of the term. In Essential Social Enterprise, Freer Spreckley traces the origin and development of social enterprise and shows how, over time, both the term and values have been altered and sometimes misinterpreted. The book praises the growth of supplementary and essential initiatives that widen the support for social enterprise influencing traditional business infrastructure mechanisms. The best known is the triple bottom line of Profit, People and Planet that has become the default criteria for corporate social responsibility. The book's central thesis is that it is excellent to see the growth of complementary social tools and different social enterprise applications, but questions whether these are displacement activities avoiding essential system change to corporate ownership and control. The book argues that the original ideas of social enterprise are urgently needed now. We should go beyond the pleasantries of putting the word 'social' in the title and assuming that means change. Freer puts forward a convincing, clear and radical interpretation in defining Social Enterprise and argues that it is a powerful solution to some of today's problems. These, he suggests, are inequality, environmental degradation, poverty and the fetish of exclusivity and puts forward the solutions of a common ownership entity, governed democratically, with integrated financial, social and ecological guiding principles and combined performance measurement indicators and a planning and evaluation method. The book suggests these changes are of our time and urgently need to be applied by organisations and businesses to create system change and avert a social and environmental decline. Furthermore, Freer argues that organisations need to be regenerative, going beyond sustainability and reversing the tread of societal inequality and ecological catastrophe in how they are owned and controlled, operate and behave. The book proposes that governments worldwide enact legislation to create a 'Social Enterprise Act' to define and hasten new organisations and enterprises to help regenerate society and the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media has drastically improved the way we can reach target audiences and serve our customers. Like its financial counterpart, the social media audit (SMA) can be described as a formalized review of anorganization's social media activities. However, contrary to financial audits, social media audits are not guided by government regulations or a set of professional rules and standards. This book will address social media marketing issues using a cost benefit approach, while presenting a systematic approach to review the organization's social media activities. Using the checklists and templates provided in this book will enable readers to conduct an audit that helps identify target areas for performance improvement and recommendations for how to achieve these objectives. Social media platforms discussed include: Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Twitter, Tumblr, and Xing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exhibitions for Social Justice assesses the state of curatorial work for social justice in the Americas and Europe today. Analyzing best practices and new curatorial work to support all those working on exhibitions, Gonzales expounds curatorial practices that lie at the nexus of contemporary museology and neurology. From sharing authority, to inspiring action and building solidarity, the book demonstrates how curators can make the most of visitors’ physical and mental experience of exhibitions. Drawing on ethnographic and archival work at over twenty institutions with nearly eighty museum professionals, as well as scholarship in the public humanities, visual culture, cultural studies, memory studies, and brain science, this project steps back from the detailed institutional histories of how exhibitions come to be. Instead, it builds a set of curatorial practices by examining the work behind the finished product in the gallery. Demonstrating that museums have the power to help our society become more hospitable, equitable, and sustainable, Exhibitions for Social Justice will be of interest to scholars and students of museum and heritage studies, gallery studies, arts and heritage management, and politics. It will also be valuable reading for museum professionals and anyone else working with exhibitions who is looking for guidance on how to ensure their work attains maximum impact.

Book excerpt: In the corporate world, businesses are focused on increasing their revenues but ignore the cries of social and environmental concerns from nearby communities. At the other end of the spectrum, nonprofits seek to help their local communities but are constantly required to create fundraisers without having adequate time to put those collected donations to use. The world needs an industry to combine civic engagement and public service with wealth and value creation to provide self-sustaining opportunities for public services that are sometimes overlooked or ignored. The Handbook of Research on Value Creation for Small and Micro Social Enterprises defines the concept of social enterprise and provides vital insight into the importance of rebalancing, creating, and promoting economic activities that achieve social fairness, cultural fulfillment, and the protection of the environment. While highlighting topics such as marketing strategies, cross-cultural frameworks, and public policy, this publication focuses on empowering rather than controlling sustainable solutions for various communities and consumers. This book is ideally designed for researchers, policymakers, academicians who teach and/or research small and micro social enterprises, and advanced-level students furthering their research exposure to pertinent topics in this field.
