Book excerpt: Visual fixation location and duration can determine accuracy in far-aiming, target-based sport skills. The research suggests that during a penalty kick shootout scenario in soccer, a visual fixation that focuses on an open-space, on-goal target increases the chance of optimal performance versus a fixation gaze that focuses primarily on the goalkeeper. The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether target specific visual fixation strategies enhanced goal-scoring performance in penalty kick shootout scenarios when compared to a "no fixation" intervention. A secondary goal was to determine whether there would be a statistically significant difference in the number of goals scored among the three visual fixation strategies used. Participants in this study were male collegiate soccer players. Two teams competed under shootout scenario conditions in a field-based setting using regulation standards and four visual fixation protocols. Results revealed that the fixed gaze "on ball" protocol yielded the most goals scored while the fixed gaze "on target of choice" the least number of goals scored. The results of this experiment also indicate that more goals were scored under the "goalkeeper" fixation than the "target of choice" fixation. The differences in the number of goals scored between the four visual fixation strategies was not statistically significant. The results of the "goalkeeper" versus "target of choice" fixations contradict those found in the literature. To enhance optimal performance during the execution of a penalty kick under a shootout scenario, it is recommended that practitioners and coaches incorporate a Quiet Eye training program that strengthens visual fixation upon open-space, on-goal targets while avoiding fixations aligned with the goalkeeper and structures these positive habits into individual pre-performance routines to decrease distracting tendencies and the likelihood of choking under pressure.

It is an attempt to close the knowledge gap among American scholars regarding the European approach to understanding CPS. Although most of the American researchers are well aware of the fact that CPS has been a very active research area in Europe for quite some time, they do not know any specifics about even the most important research. Part of the reason for this lack of knowledge is undoubtedly the fact that European researchers -- for the most part -- have been rather reluctant to publish their work in English-language journals. The book concentrates on European research because the basic approach European scholars have taken to studying CPS is very different from one taken by North American researchers. Traditionally, American scholars have been studying CPS in "natural" domains -- physics, reading, writing, and chess playing -- concentrating primarily on exploring novice-expert differences and the acquisition of a complex skill. European scholars, in contrast, have been primarily concerned with problem solving behavior in artificially generated, mostly computerized, complex systems. While the American approach has the advantage of high external validity, the European approach has the advantage of system variables that can be systematically manipulated to reveal the effects of system parameters on CPS behavior. The two approaches are thus best viewed as complementing each other. This volume contains contributions from four European countries -- Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, and Germany. As such, it accurately represents the bulk of empirical research on CPS which has been conducted in Europe. An international cooperation started two years ago with the goal of bringing the European research on complex problem solving to the awareness of American scholars. A direct result of that effort, the contributions to this book are both informative and comprehensive.
