Book Synopsis Criminology in Africa by : Tibamanya mwene Mushanga
Download or read book Criminology in Africa written by Tibamanya mwene Mushanga and published by Fountain Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, this revised edition remains a rare study of criminology in the African context, considered from a pan-African perspective. The paucity of information and analysis on crime in Africa, both at national and continental levels, and the ongoing concerns about crime and its negative impacts on law, human rights and development in the region, assure the work continual relevance. On a practical level if African countries are to ensure that crime is dealt with as efficiently as possible, and through prevention, so that resources can be directed to areas of greatest need, then laws and strategies at local and international levels will need to be based on the kinds of data and reflection that this collection of papers provides. Some topics covered include: traditional, colonial and present day administration of criminal justice; the problems associated with criminal justice in Madagascar; state violence in Uganda; a case study of corruption in Nigeria; criminal politics in Cameroon; drug trafficking and abuse; homicide in Sierra Leone; youth and crime; the relationship between migration, crime and delinquency; and violence as a weapon of the dispossessed. A final chapter considers the state of teaching and research in the field of criminology in Africa. The contributions are in both English and French. The editor is a criminologist and a diplomat. He has variously served as Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the universities of Makerere and Nairobi.

Book Synopsis Architecture and Empire in Jamaica by : Louis P. Nelson
Download or read book Architecture and Empire in Jamaica written by Louis P. Nelson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through Creole houses and merchant stores to sugar fields and boiling houses, Jamaica played a leading role in the formation of both the early modern Atlantic world and the British Empire. Architecture and Empire in Jamaica offers the first scholarly analysis of Jamaican architecture in the long 18th century, spanning roughly from the Port Royal earthquake of 1692 to Emancipation in 1838. In this richly illustrated study, which includes hundreds of the author's own photographs and drawings, Louis P. Nelson examines surviving buildings and archival records to write a social history of architecture. Nelson begins with an overview of the architecture of the West African slave trade then moves to chapters framed around types of buildings and landscapes, including the Jamaican plantation landscape and fortified houses to the architecture of free blacks. He concludes with a consideration of Jamaican architecture in Britain. By connecting the architecture of the Caribbean first to West Africa and then to Britain, Nelson traces the flow of capital and makes explicit the material, economic, and political networks around the Atlantic.

Book Synopsis Colonial Modernities by : Peter Scriver
Download or read book Colonial Modernities written by Peter Scriver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A carefully crafted selection of essays from international experts, this book explores the effect of colonial architecture and space on the societies involved – both the colonizer and the colonized. Focusing on British India and Ceylon, the essays explore the discursive tensions between the various different scales and dimensions of such 'empire-building' practices and constructions. Providing a thorough exploration of these tensions, Colonial Modernities challenges the traditional literature on the architecture and infrastructure of the former European empires, not least that of the British Indian 'Raj'. Illustrated with seventy-five halftone images, it is a fascinating and thoroughly grounded exposition of the societal impact of colonial architecture and engineering.
Book Synopsis The Trouble with Empire by : Antoinette M. Burton
Download or read book The Trouble with Empire written by Antoinette M. Burton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While imperial blockbusters fly off the shelves, there is no comprehensive history dedicated to resistance in the 19th and 20th century British Empire. The Trouble with Empire is the first volume to fill this gap, offering a brief but thorough introduction to the nature and consequences of resistance to British imperialism. Historian Antoinette Burton's study spans the 19th and 20th centuries, when discontented subjects of empire made their unhappiness felt from Ireland to Canada to India to Africa to Australasia, in direct response to incursions of military might and imperial capitalism. The Trouble with Empire offers the first thoroughgoing account of what British imperialism looked like from below and of how tenuous its hold on alien populations was throughout its long, unstable life. By taking the long view, moving across a variety of geopolitical sites and spanning the whole of the period 1840-1955, Burton examines the commonalities between different forms of resistance and unveils the structural weaknesses of the British Empire.0.
