Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, my unedited autobiography, I explain how, with my pronounced limited academic ability, I managed to utilize both positive and detrimental factors from my early childhood to my advantage in order to accomplish my ultimate success in life. I discuss the many hardships and hurdles I encountered during my seemingly-impossible educational path. My eventual goal was also undoubtedly attributed to my life-long ability of being able to over-achieve and out-perform. Simply put, I had to be subjected to many needless but necessary stressful situations along with a combination of other factors in order to obtain what seemed to be an un-attainable goal. Along with these factors and endless battles with Bipolar Illness, I managed to convert these deterrents into an incredibly advantageous situation. Even one of my decisions to quit medical school turned out to be a very important impetus in my eventual success. In the second section of this book, I explain the many functions, procedures, and powers of the Coroner's Office, and detail the position of coroner that I held for fourteen years. The purpose of this was to set the stage for my being able to describe and report in depth the many unusual and bizarre cases that I encountered during this time. When things appear to be coming at you from all directions and your outlook appears quite gloomy and hopeless, don't even think about giving up. No matter how many destitute situations you find yourself in along the way, stay persistent and keep trying, because the eventual outcome may not be as predictable as everyone would like to think. This is an autobiography of a rural physician and coroner of a mid-sized Louisiana Parish who was able to accomplish one of the highest-possible goals in spite of his self-admitted limited academic ability. Having been the oldest of nine siblings, six of whom also became doctors, he explains as to how he was forced to encounter numerous hardships and ever-present challenges in order to be able to conquer a goal that seemed virtually impossible. Dr. Cefalu tells of how he managed to utilize both positive and detrimental factors from his early childhood to his advantage in order to accomplish his ultimate success in life. Along with these factors, many other constant struggles and endless battles with Bipolar Illness, he somehow managed to convert these deterrents into an incredibly advantageous situation whereby his ability to over-achieve and out-perform would make up the difference. Even one of his decisions to quit medical school turned out to be a very important impetus in his eventual success. In the second section of this book, he explains the many functions, procedures, and powers of the Coroner's Office, and details the position of coroner that he held for fourteen years. The purpose of this was to set the stage for his being able to describe and report in depth the many unusual and bizarre cases that he encountered during this time.

Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book excerpt: The Dolls, peddling trans-gender posturing and incendiary rock 'n' roll, were dumped by the record business after making just two albums. But their influence lived on when Malcolm McLaren injected the last of The Dolls' life blood into the Sex Pistols and changed pop forever. From punk to grunge, practically every new sensation in contemporary rock has been a delayed reaction to The New York Dolls.Too Much Too Soon celebrates all the glorious sleaze and excess of the Dolls' brief auto-destruct career through interviews with the survivors, including band members, managers, roadies, groupies and hangers-on. The result is the ultimate saga of unrepentant rock 'n' roll and debauchery. This updated edition includes details of the band's reunion for Morrissey's Meltdown event in 2004, as well as the tragic death of Arthur Cane shortly afterwards.

Book excerpt: Three sisters arrive in San Francisco after their mother dies with dreams of making a new life for themselves. Honora, the eldest, quickly falls in love with the suave and devastatingly handsome Curt Ivory, an employee at the engineering firm of the girls’ wealthy uncle, Gideon Talbott. When Gideon hears of the twosome’s romance, he fires Curt, and the young couple must flee down the Californian coast. Desperate to support himself and Honora, Curt starts his own firm, which quickly gains prominence and becomes Gideon’s biggest business rival. Meanwhile, Crystal, the beautiful but manipulative middle sister, and the spunky and clever younger daughterJocelyn are left with Gideon, and Crystal agrees to be Gideon’s wife out of greed rather than love. Jocelyn is horrified by Crystal’s choice and runs away to Los Angeles to live with Honora and Curt. In L.A., Crystal flourishes, graduating from a prestigious college and working as an engineer at Curt’s firm. Despite her talent in the workplace, she gives up her job to marry the charming but reserved Malcolm Peck, a decision that leads her to make choices she will later regret until the day she dies. Through it all, the three sisters remain connected by an unbreakable bond—one that is tested again and again by acts of betrayal and deceit, and twists of fate that shake them to their very core. A steamy saga that takes readers from engineering sites in the most remote corners of the globe, to the posh neighborhoods of Hollywood, and finally to a dramatic conclusion on the floor of the Senate, Too Much Too Soon is the ultimate exploration of love and the relationships that define us all.

Book excerpt: Covers the entire history of Arctic and Antarctic exploration, from the voyage of Pytheas ca. 325 B.C. to the present, in one convenient, comprehensive reference resource. Exploring Polar Frontiers: A Historical Encyclopedia is the only reference work that provides a comprehensive history of polar exploration from the ancient period through the present day. The author is a noted polar scholar and offers dramatic accounts of all major explorers and their expeditions, together with separate exploration histories for specific islands, regions, and uncharted waters. He presents a wealth of fascinating information under a variety of subject entries including methods of transport, myths, achievements, and record-breaking activities. By approaching polar exploration biographically, geographically, and topically, Mills reveals a number of intriguing connections between the various explorers, their patrons and times, and the process of discovery in all areas of the polar regions. Furthermore, he provides the reader with a clear understanding of the intellectual climate as well as the dominant social, economic, and political forces surrounding each expedition. Readers will learn why the journeys were undertaken, not just where, when, and how.
