Book excerpt: Allan Strain was raised in a good home. One in North Vancouver, British Columbia, a city surrounded by mountains, forests, and sea. But despite this seemingly unspoiled atmosphere, everything started to change for the worse when Strain was just 10. His dad died. Three year later, Strain learned he was adopted: his teacher announced it in front of the class. Strain discovered that his birth mother was Indigenous. Both parents had a history of alcoholism. And worse: a decade before, Strain’s birth father beat a sex worker to death. Forty years later, he’s still incarcerated for the crime. Changing the Status Quo is a memoir detailing the events that led Strain down a destructive path of alcohol abuse and addiction to crack cocaine. Although the subject matter can be difficult to endure at times, Strain’s compelling storytelling draws the reader into his self-destructive world. You can practically hear him whispering the words, “Act sober, act sober, act sober” (he knows the liquor store won’t let him buy more beer if he’s drunk) and holding your breath as he tumbles down his apartment building’s stairs—twice. The book also balances darkness with hope, namely Strain’s detailed descriptions of how he recovered from addiction. Strain has been clean and sober since September 3, 2002.

Book excerpt: Every song on every album by the classic line-up dissected and discussedThe stories behind the songs, their context within the parent albums and the times they were written and recordedThe release date of every single and B-side trackWhat the band and critics had/have to say about their musical development After their initial inception as a schoolboy band in 1962, and following a number of band name and personnel changes, Status Quo eventually hit the charts in 1968 with the massive hit single ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’. However, it was not until they ditched their psychedelic duds and took on the denim, accompanied by a radical gearshift from teenage-friendly pop to out-and-out electric boogie, that they came into their own, defining the rock music genre for many throughout the Seventies. A raft of hugely successful albums followed that are still held in awe by an army of loyal fans; the release of Piledriver in 1972 heralded a purple patch in which twelve consecutive long-players charted in the UK Top 10. The classic ‘Frantic Four’ line-up of Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster and Coghlan started to disintegrate in 1981 and eventually imploded in 1985. Although they have gone on to post over sixty UK chart hits in six separate decades, Status Quo: Song by Song focuses on those days of glory from their earliest recordings until the demise of the classic line-up.

Young and New Women Professors of Educational Leadership was conceptualized as a follow-up to Breaking Into the All-Male Club: Female Professors of Educational Administration (Mertz, 2009), a book about and by many women who were the first women faculty admitted into departments of educational administration primarily in the 1970's and 1980's. This book offers narratives of those women new to the field of educational leadership and makes comparisons to those stories shared by the veteran women in the field to highlight both similarities and differences. Continuing to Disrupt the Status Quo? Young and New Women Professors of Educational Leadership is a literary way to preserve and continue the tradition of the sharing/addition of voices to the field of educational leadership that was begun with Breaking Into the All-Male Club. It begs the question, "If the women from Breaking Into the All-Male Club are "firsts," "pioneers," and "groundbreakers," then who are we, the young and new women of the field? If the entrance of women into the field of educational leadership was threatening enough for the veteran women (and still is for many of the young and new women), then the addition of age and ethnicity as confounding factors has likely created a cacophony of dissonance forty years later! Continuing to Disrupt the Status Quo? represents a decade of stories (2002-2012) from young and new women to the field of educational leadership.

Book excerpt: In the spirit of Gretchen Rubin’s megaseller The Happiness Project and Eric Weiner’s The Geography of Bliss, a journalist embarks on a project to discover what it takes to love where you live The average restless American will move 11.7 times in a lifetime. For Melody Warnick, it was move #6, from Austin, Texas, to Blacksburg, Virginia, that threatened to unhinge her. In the lonely aftermath of unpacking, she wondered: Aren’t we supposed to put down roots at some point? How does the place we live become the place we want to stay? This time, she had an epiphany. Rather than hold her breath and hope this new town would be her family’s perfect fit, she would figure out how to fall in love with it—no matter what. How we come to feel at home in our towns and cities is what Warnick sets out to discover in This Is Where You Belong. She dives into the body of research around place attachment—the deep sense of connection that binds some of us to our cities and increases our physical and emotional well-being—then travels to towns across America to see it in action. Inspired by a growing movement of placemaking, she examines what its practitioners are doing to create likeable locales. She also speaks with frequent movers and loyal stayers around the country to learn what draws highly mobile Americans to a new city, and what makes us stay. The best ideas she imports to her adopted hometown of Blacksburg for a series of Love Where You Live experiments designed to make her feel more locally connected. Dining with her neighbors. Shopping Small Business Saturday. Marching in the town Christmas parade. Can these efforts make a halfhearted resident happier? Will Blacksburg be the place she finally stays? What Warnick learns will inspire you to embrace your own community—and perhaps discover that the place where you live right now . . . is home.

Book excerpt: In Goodbye, Status Quo, visionary scientist and leading entrepreneur Dr. Joan Fallon equips readers with the tools to overcome obstacles and become agents of change—as entrepreneurs, leaders, and individuals. In Goodbye, Status Quo, Dr. Joan Fallon equips her readers with the tools to be agents of change: as entrepreneurs, leaders, and individuals. No matter where you come from or who you are, you can be an agent of change. If you are setting out to change the world—great, she affirms—just keep in mind that change must start with you. As a company founder, Dr. Fallon faced many obstacles. Some of the greatest ones came from how other people saw her. A woman in her fifties with a warm, approachable manner, she didn’t fit the typical entrepreneur profile. Now as a respected business leader, doctor, and academic who sits on the boards of numerous non-profits and is frequently asked to mentor others, Joan is driven to share what she has learned and the perspectives that brought her success. She is also fascinated by the subject of change. What are the impediments that keep leaders and individuals from changing the world, or even just changing themselves, and how can they be overcome? What is it about you that holds you, your job, or your company back from changing? Joan Fallon believes that deductive reasoning in addition to the typical inductive reasoning and other science-based approaches allow us to move past the reactive responses that leave us stuck, unable to innovate and make change. Fear-based thinking rules in many sectors today—in business, politics, even relationships. And fear is the fundamental factor that holds us back from embracing change. Goodbye, Status Quo blends lessons from Joan’s own entrepreneurial experiences and scientific observations to give readers informative and actionable advice on the topics of entrepreneurship, innovation, and making change. Each chapter offers pithy advice that taps into business, medicine, philosophy, and even baseball. No matter your background, experience, or personal struggles, you can change the world—if you are willing to first change yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Status Quo were one of the most successful, influential and innovative bands of the 1970s. During the first half of the decade, they wrote, recorded and performed a stream of inventive and highly complex rock compositions, developed 12 bar forms and techniques in new and fascinating ways, and affected important musical and cultural trends. But, despite global success on stage and in the charts, they were maligned by the UK music press, who often referred to them as lamebrained three-chord wonders, and shunned by the superstar Disk Jockeys of the era, who refused to promote their music. As a result, Status Quo remain one of the most misunderstood and underrated bands in the history of popular music. Cope redresses that misconception through a detailed study of the band’s music and live performances, related musical and cultural subtopics and interviews with key band members. The band is reinstated as a serious, artistic and creative phenomenon of the 1970s scene and shown to be vital contributors to the evolution of rock.

Book excerpt: The works of Dreiser and Veblen make up a neglected chapter in the history of United States cultural criticism. Their central subjects (such as the myriad effects of consumer capitalism and the invidious status system) still preoccupy cultural critics, and with good reason. Veblen and Dreiser also pioneered strategies for positioning themselves as confrontational intellectuals (such as by attacking foundationalism and claims of epistemological certainty) that continue to inform the practice of many cultural critics. Thus, in both subject matter and rhetorical strategy, Dreiser’s and Veblen’s writings provide prototypes for the work that many United States scholars want to do now, work which often turns to European or postmodern theory for inspiration. In making this claim about the usefulness of Dreiser and Veblen for current intellectual work, my argument parallels recent rehabilitations of American thinkers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered where the ever expanding layers of bureaucracy are taking us in the field of education? This book challenges us to think carefully about this question. The status quo in education consists of policies, practices, and power structures impacting the way we teach, and prevent students from learning in meaningful and significant ways. Assessment techniques drive our teaching practices resulting in a learning process that students strongly dislike. Technology like PowerPoint presentations and clickers force students to pay attention to lectures, but the end result is the same-memorizing information for exams. It is causing students to become less focused on comprehending what they read. It is also physically changing the way students read focusing on small sound bites on what they believe is necessary to remember for tests. Discriminating against students of color continues to be a prevalent problem as well. Data show that white educators consist of a huge majority often lacking cultural awareness in our classrooms. Reading this book will inspire you to become a courageous educator and implement meaningful changes in your classroom on how to asses your students, what kind and how much technology to use, and how to sensitively treat educators and students of color.
