Book excerpt: "The primary purpose of this compendium is to give detailed results of a Snow-Blue Goose (Chen caerulescens) band recovery analysis and provide supporting data to conclusions presented in a previous report, (Dzubin, Boyd and Stephen, 1973). Secondarily, it attempts to draw together population data which will aid managers, administrators and researchers to plan future programs or management strategies. The recovery data themselves are presented in a standardized format and are referenced in nine appendices, to aid resource managers in assessing the available distribution evidence"--Introduction, page 1.

A number of surveys have been conducted at breeding colonies in recent years to estimate population size and trends. Summarizing the available data, we estimate that approximately 38 000 pairs of Razorbills currently breed in eastern North America. The largest concentrations of Razorbills breed on the Quebec North Shore and in coastal southern Labrador; smaller numbers breed in the Quebec portion of the gulf and estuary of the St. Lawrence River, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and St. Pierre and Miquelon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As scientific understanding about ecological processes has grown, the idea that ecosystem dynamics are complex, nonlinear, and often unpredictable has gained prominence. Of particular importance is the idea that rather than following an inevitable progression toward an ultimate endpoint, some ecosystems may occur in a number of states depending on past and present ecological conditions. The emerging idea of “restoration thresholds” also enables scientists to recognize when ecological systems are likely to recover on their own and when active restoration efforts are needed. Conceptual models based on alternative stable states and restoration thresholds can help inform restoration efforts. New Models for Ecosystem Dynamics and Restoration brings together leading experts from around the world to explore how conceptual models of ecosystem dynamics can be applied to the recovery of degraded systems and how recent advances in our understanding of ecosystem and landscape dynamics can be translated into conceptual and practical frameworks for restoration. In the first part of the book, background chapters present and discuss the basic concepts and models and explore the implications of new scientific research on restoration practice. The second part considers the dynamics and restoration of different ecosystems, ranging from arid lands to grasslands, woodlands, and savannahs, to forests and wetlands, to production landscapes. A summary chapter by the editors discusses the implications of theory and practice of the ideas described in preceding chapters. New Models for Ecosystem Dynamics and Restoration aims to widen the scope and increase the application of threshold models by critiquing their application in a wide range of ecosystem types. It will also help scientists and restorationists correctly diagnose ecosystem damage, identify restoration thresholds, and develop corrective methodologies that can overcome such thresholds.

Book excerpt: The Northern Highlands of Mexico is an increasingly important wintering area for populations of Lesser Snow Geese and Ross" Geese that nest in the Western and Central Canadian Arctic. In Mexico, the growing importance of the Northern Highlands as a wintering area for Ross" Geese and the western Central Flyway population of Lesser Snow Geese underscored the need to conduct field observations in that area and prompted the development of a joint effort involving the Mexican Secretaria de Desarrolla Social, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Canadian Wildlife Service. Some of the objectives were: estimate the number of white geese on the principal wintering areas in the states of Durango and Chihuahua, determine the breeding ground origin of Lesser Snow Goose stocks overwinterin in Mexico, determint ehe incidence and number of Ross' Geese among flocks of white geese, assess the quality and security of white goose wintering habitat, and identify wetland habitats of critical importance to waterfowl.

Book excerpt: The eight currently recognized species of North American geese are part of a familiar group of birds collectively called waterfowl, all of which are smaller than swans and generally larger than ducks. They include the most popular of our aquatic gamebirds, with several million shot each year by sport hunters. Our two most abundant waterfowl, the Canada goose and snow goose, have populations collectively totaling about 15 million individuals. Like swans, the lifelong pairbonding of geese, their familial care, and prolonged social attachment to their offspring are legendary. Their seasonal migratory flights sometimes span thousands of miles, and the sight of their long, wavering flight formations are as much the symbols of seasonal change as are the spring songs of cardinals or the appearance of autumnal leaf colors. This book describes each species' geographic range and subspecies, its identification traits, weights and measurements, and criteria for its age and sex determination. Ecological and behavioral information includes each species' breeding and wintering habitats, its foods and foraging behavior, its local and long distance movements, and its relationships with other species. Reproductive information includes each species' age of maturity, pair-bond pattern, pair-forming behaviors, usual clutch sizes and incubation periods, brooding behavior, and postbreeding behavior. Mortality sources and rates of egg, young, and adult losses are also summarized, and each species' past and current North American populations are estimated. In addition to a text of nearly 60,000 words, the book includes 8 maps, 21 line drawings, and 28 photographs by the author, as well as more than 700 literature citations.

Book excerpt: In range, Wild Geese covers the geese of North America, Europe and Asia, and thus the world species except for the Hawaiian Goose or Ne-Ne. The plan of the book is similar to the author's Ducks of Britain and Europe but distribution, status and migration rightly assume a more extensive role in Wild Geese and the detailed text on those subjects is fully complemented by migration and distribution maps. Comprehensive chapters are also devoted to classification, ecology, breeding, identification, and to exploitation and conservation. The identification chapter is especially helpful with sections on adult and first winter birds, downy young, plumage variants and voice, for each species and sub-species, as well as guidance on ageing and sexing geese in the field. The text is effectively supported by 16 identification plates in colour by Carol Ogilvie, showing details of heads and bills as well as all species in flight and on the ground, and downy young. The author is an established authority on ducks and geese and has been a research scientist at the Wildfowl Trust, Slimbridge, England, since 1960.
