Book excerpt: Snapshots is a kind of verbal photo album that uses the sixty-six books of the Bible as a catalyst to move our thoughts to each of these portions of scripture. Just as a snapshot of days gone by does not capture the entire event, neither does this devotional expand the entire meaning or application for any single book in the Bible. Taking a picture, or snapshot, of a moment does not really do justice to a beautiful scene we witnessed during our vacation, but it puts a stake in our mind. The picture may even suggest that we have experienced something grand and we want to go back and visit the vacation spot again. We will always find something new when we revisit scripture. The Bible is relational in style because it speaks to us in a very personal way. The author provides his own verbal pictures of the first part of each book, illustrating the application according to his experience. Once we begin taking our own snapshots of the Bible, we charter the important scenes that relate to us at that particular time in our life. Every day in this devotional is dedicated to a book in the Bible, sixty-six days in all. Reading scripture should be fun. The author finds humor in many aspects of his own life and shares parallels in order to illustrate the loving nature of God's message to all of us.

Book excerpt: In the past few decades Computer Hardware Description Languages (CHDLs) have been a rapidly expanding subject area due to a number of factors, including the advancing complexity of digital electronics, the increasing prevalence of generic and programmable components of software-hardware and the migration of VLSI design to high level synthesis based on HDLs. Currently the subject has reached the consolidation phase in which languages and standards are being increasingly used, at the same time as the scope is being broadened to additional application areas. This book presents the latest developments in this area and provides a forum from which readers can learn from the past and look forward to what the future holds.

Book excerpt: Despite the advent and maturation of high-performance computing, high-fidelity physics-based numerical simulations remain computationally intensive in many fields. As a result, such simulations are often impractical for time-critical applications such as fast-turnaround design, control, and uncertainty quantification. The objective of this thesis is to enable rapid, accurate analysis of high-fidelity nonlinear models to enable their use in time-critical settings. Model reduction presents a promising approach for realizing this goal. This class of methods generates low-dimensional models that preserves key features of the high-fidelity model. Such methods have been shown to generate fast, accurate solutions when applied to specialized problems such as linear time-invariant systems. However, model reduction techniques for highly nonlinear systems has been limited primarily to approaches based on the heuristic proper orthogonal decomposition (POD)--Galerkin approach. These methods often generate inaccurate responses because 1) POD--Galerkin does not generally minimize any measure of the system error, and 2) the POD basis is not constructed to minimize errors in the system's outputs of interest. Furthermore, simulation times for these models usually remain large, as reducing the dimension of a nonlinear system does not necessarily reduce its computational complexity. This thesis presents two model reduction techniques that addresses these shortcomings of the POD--Galerkin method. The first method is a `compact POD' approach for computing the small-dimensional trial basis; this approach is applicable to parameterized static systems. The compact POD basis is constructed using a goal-oriented framework that allows sensitivity derivatives to be employed as snapshots. The second method is a Gauss--Newton with approximated tensors (GNAT) method applicable to nonlinear systems. Similar to other POD-based approaches, the GNAT method first executes high-fidelity simulations during a costly `offline' stage; it computes a POD subspace that optimally represents the state as observed during these simulations. To compute fast, accurate `online' solutions, the method introduces two approximations that satisfy optimality and consistency conditions. First, the method decreases the system dimension by searching for the solutions in the low-dimensional POD subspace. As opposed to performing a Galerkin projection, the method handles the resulting overdetermined system of equations arising at each time step by formulating a least-squares problem; this ensures that a measure of the system error (i.e. the residual) is minimized. Second, the method decreases the model's computational complexity by approximating the residual and Jacobian using the `gappy POD' technique; this requires computing only a few rows of the approximated quantities. For computational mechanics problems, the GNAT method leads to the concept of a sample mesh: the subset of the mesh needed to compute the selected rows of the residual and Jacobian. Because the reduced-order model uses only the sample mesh for computations, the online stage requires minimal computational resources.

Book excerpt: 2021 Special Edition of the American Educational History Journal (The official journal of the Organization of Educational Historians) The American Educational History Journal is a peer-reviewed, national research journal devoted to the examination of educational topics using perspectives from a variety of disciplines. For more information about the Organization of Educational Historians (OEH) and its annual conference, visit the OEH web site at the web address: www.edhistorians.org. This Special Edition of the American Educational History Journal entitled, Snapshots of Educational History: Portraits of the 21st Century Pandemic, is the first special issue in the history of AEHJ. The word, “unprecedented” has literally been used thousands of times during 2020 by news outlets, in our work environments, and in our daily lives. And indeed, the global pandemic has killed over 600,000 in the United States alone at the time of this writing. The public health crisis shut down everything as we knew it. Captives of sheltering-in-place, scores of incidents displaying horrific police brutality against people of color streamed live on airwaves north, south, east, and west, begetting civil unrest across the country. These are circumstances unlike any we have experienced in our lifetimes. As historians, it is critical that we document this time of crisis so that generations to come can bear witness to this time of turmoil and tragedy. With these ideas in mind, the American Educational History Journal sought to hear from historians and other scholars about this unique and devastating time in our country’s history. The Journal honors the traditions of oral history and narrative storytelling as a means to gather the voices of those whose lives have been touched by the COVID-19 crisis, literally everyone around the globe. This special issue deviates a bit from traditional AEHJ requirements in that we specifically invited narratives, not be full-blown historical research studies. The point of this special issue is for authors themselves to serve as the archival material that will benefit future scholars interested in understanding what it meant to live through this health catastrophe while doing the work of educators. We believe we owe it to the historians of the future to share our voices in real time.

Book excerpt: We, the authors of this book, are three ardent devotees of chance, or some what more precisely, of discrete probability. When we were collecting the material, we felt that one special pleasure of the field lay in its evocation of an earlier age: many of our 'probabilistic forefathers' were dexterous solvers of discrete problems. We hope that this pleasure will be transmitted to the readers. The first problem-book of a similar kind as ours is perhaps Mosteller's well-known Fifty Challenging Problems in Probability (1965). Possibly, our book is the second. The book contains 125 problems and snapshots from the world of prob ability. A 'problem' generally leads to a question with a definite answer. A 'snapshot' is either a picture or a bird's-eye view of some probabilistic field. The selection is, of course, highly subjective, and we have not even tried to cover all parts of the subject systematically. Limit theorems appear only seldom, for otherwise the book would have become unduly large. We want to state emphatically that we have not written a textbook in probability, but rather a book for browsing through when occupying an easy-chair. Therefore, ideas and results are often put forth without a machinery of formulas and derivations; the conscientious readers, who want to penetrate the whole clockwork, will soon have to move to their desks and utilize appropriate tools.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the mathematical techniques for turbulence control in a form suitable for inclusion in an engineering degree program at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels whilst also making it useful to researchers and industrial users of the concepts. It uses a mix of theory, computation and experimental results to present and illustrate the methodologies. It is based on the three part structure, wall turbulence, open loop control and feedback control with emphasis on optimal control methodologies. The book also includes an introduction of basic principles and fundamentals followed by a chapter on the structure of wall turbulence with emphasis on coherent structures. Elsewhere there is focus on control methods of wall turbulence by manipulating the boundaries though their motion and by applying control forces throughout the flow volume. The last two chapters will describe the linear and non-linear optimal controls. This integrated approach will help not only researchers interested in the topic but also graduate or advanced undergraduate students in their course work.
