Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smyrna Fig Culture Lagona, Cal, had shares in the importation, but the San Francisco Bulletin Company had the larger portion and paid the greater part of the expense. A large number of cuttings were distributed to county subscribers of the Bulletin, while the individual shares went to the different partners in the enterprise. Gov. Stanford planted most of his cuttings on his ranch near Vina, Cal. Now the property of Stanford University. The trees resulting from this importation are now growing in all parts of California and other Southwestern States. Some have attained gigantic size, a number recently measured by the writer having trunks 3 feet in diameter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fig Culture in California Commercial fig orchards appear to have been established in the coast counties, and even in the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Foothills, earlier than in the San J oaquin Valley. In 1876 there were trees in Yolo County, in Tuolumne, and only 685 in Fresno County. An orchard of 27 acres of White Adriatic fig trees was planted at Fresno about 1885, the first carload of dried white figs being sent east in 1889. The White Adriatic was the most widely planted variety during the two decades following 1885 but the dried product lacked the tender ness of skin and the flavor of the imported fig from Smyrna. The Year book of the United States Department of Agriculture for 1897 stated that the White Adriatic has many points of merit, but the fact that its quality when dried is inferior to that of the imported dried fruit from Smyrna has resulted in several efforts to introduce and grow the Smyrna type of fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Bulletin of State Commission of Horticulture, Vol. 5: January, 1916 In growing Smyrna fig trees it is essential to plant from three to five capri trees to every hundred Smyrna trees, either in a grove by them selves, where they will be convenient for close observation, or in a segre gated row running through the center of the orchard. A peculiarity of the fig tree is its method of flowering. Other decid nous trees bloom before the fruit appears, after which the foliage and the fruit grow almost simultaneously. On the fig tree the foliage first appears, with some scattering figs, which are called early figs or first crop, then branches develop from six to ten inches in length, depending on the age of the tree. This growing period extends from the latter part of March to the fifteenth of May, at which time the tree ceases to branch. Then the figs for the first time are plainly apparent on the tree. Three or four figs appear on the lower part of the branch during the first week of production, two or three more during the second week, and finally one or two more figs appear at the end of the branch during the third week of production. Because the figs do not all mature at the same time, it is absolutely necessary to have the early, medium and late varieties of capri. Book excerpt: Alive with the exuberance, contradictions, and variety of the Golden State, this Depression-era guide to California is more than 700 pages of information that is, as David Kipen writes in his spirited introduction, “anecdotal, opinionated, and altogether habit-forming.” Describing the history, culture, and roadside attractions of the 1930s, the WPA Guide to California features some of the very best anonymous literature of its era, with writing by luminaries such as San Francisco poet Kenneth Rexroth, composer-writer- hobo Harry Partch, and authors Tillie Olsen and Kenneth Patchen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith
