Book Synopsis Teaching Mathematics by : Michelle Selinger
Download or read book Teaching Mathematics written by Michelle Selinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this reader, maths teachers in the early years of their careers will find a concise yet comprehensive guide to developments in mathematics teaching in secondary schools and the controversies which currently surround it. After a brief summary of the historical context, a series of short articles provides a range of perspectives on various issues of current debate which will help new teachers in the development of their own teaching styles. These include the impact of computers and calculators in maths teaching, the various arguments about the use of published schemes and for more investigational approaches to the curriculum, and the way in which social and cultural factors can be approached through the teaching of various topics in mathematics. The final section looks at how teachers might continue their professional development through action research in their own classrooms.

Book Synopsis Modern Mathematics by : Dirk De Bock
Download or read book Modern Mathematics written by Dirk De Bock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international New Math developments between about 1950 through 1980, are regarded by many mathematics educators and education historians as the most historically important development in curricula of the twentieth century. It attracted the attention of local and international politicians, of teachers, and of parents, and influenced the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels—kindergarten to college graduate—in many nations. After garnering much initial support it began to attract criticism. But, as Bill Jacob and the late Jerry Becker show in Chapter 17, some of the effects became entrenched. This volume, edited by Professor Dirk De Bock, of Belgium, provides an outstanding overview of the New Math/modern mathematics movement. Chapter authors provide exceptionally high-quality analyses of the rise of the movement, and of subsequent developments, within a range of nations. The first few chapters show how the initial leadership came from mathematicians in European nations and in the United States of America. The background leaders in Europe were Caleb Gattegno and members of a mysterious group of mainly French pure mathematicians, who since the 1930s had published under the name of (a fictitious) “Nicolas Bourbaki.” In the United States, there emerged, during the 1950s various attempts to improve U.S. mathematics curricula and teaching, especially in secondary schools and colleges. This side of the story climaxed in 1957 when the Soviet Union succeeded in launching “Sputnik,” the first satellite. Undoubtedly, this is a landmark publication in education. The foreword was written by Professor Bob Moon, one of a few other scholars to have written on the New Math from an international perspective. The final “epilogue” chapter, by Professor Geert Vanpaemel, a historian, draws together the overall thrust of the volume, and makes links with the general history of curriculum development, especially in science education, including recent globalization trends.
Book Synopsis Using Children's Literature to Teach Problem Solving in Math by : Jeanne White
Download or read book Using Children's Literature to Teach Problem Solving in Math written by Jeanne White and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how children’s literature can help K–5 students see the real-life applications of mathematical concepts. This user-friendly book shows how to use stories to engage students in building critical reasoning, abstract thinking, and communication skills, all while helping students understand the relevance of math in their everyday lives. Each chapter is dedicated to one of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice, and offers examples of children’s literature that can be used to help students develop that practice. You’ll find out how to: Encourage students to persevere in solving mathematical problems and use multiple approaches to find the answer; Help students reason abstractly with the aid of concrete objects and visuals; Guide students in constructing arguments to explain their reasoning and engage in critical discussion with their peers; Teach students to recognize mathematical patterns and use them to solve problems efficiently; And more! The book offers activities for beginners as well as for more advanced problem solvers. Each chapter also provides guidance for ELLs and students with special needs, so no matter your classroom environment, you’ll be able to use these strategies to make math class more dynamic, engaging, and fun.

Book Synopsis Practical Curriculum Study by : Douglas Barnes
Download or read book Practical Curriculum Study written by Douglas Barnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982. This book presents a view of how the curriculum should be studied and a model for the teaching of curriculum theory. It looks at each issue clearly and briefly, and without dogmatism, and offers a wide range of practical tasks. These tasks require readers to reflect upon and analyse their preconceptions about teaching; to suggest ways of planning work for their pupils and trying it out; to analyse and evaluate textbooks and worksheets; to study other teachers in action; and to consider alternative ways of organising the curriculum. The ordering is designed to encourage teachers to form systematic strategies for thinking about the curriculum, and to lead to the discussion of matters of principle as a basis for practical choices.
