Book excerpt: Down the River is a collection of essays both timeless and timely. It is an exploration of the abiding beauty of some of the last great stretches of American wilderness on voyages down rivers where the body and mind float free, and the grandeur of nature gives rise to meditations on everything from the life of Henry David Thoreau to the militarization of the open range. At the same time, it is an impassioned condemnation of what is being done to our natural heritage in the name of progress, profit, and security. Filled with fiery dawns, wild and shining rivers, and radiant sandstone canyons, it is charged as well with heartfelt, rampageous rage at human greed, blindness, and folly. It is, in short, Edward Abbey at his best, where and when we need him most.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sand, Wind, and War records the work, travels and adventures of one of the last of the great British explorers, a man who served in both world wars and carved out a special niche in science through his studies of desert sands. Ralph Alger Bagnold was born in 1896 into a military family and educated as an engineer. Posted to Egypt in 1926, he was one of a group of officers who adapted Model T Fords to desert travel and in 1932 made the first east-west crossing—6,000 miles—of the Libyan desert. Bagnold established such a name for himself that in World War II he was again posted to Egypt where he founded and trained the Long Range Desert Group that was to confound the German and Italian armies. Bagnold’s fascination with the desert included curiosity over the formation of dunes, and beginning in 1935 he conducted wind tunnel experiments with sand that led to the book The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes. Eventually, he was to see his findings called on by NASA to interpret data on the sands of Mars. He devoted subsequent research to particle flow in fluids, and also served as a consultant to Middle Eastern governments concerned with the interference of sand flow in oil drilling. Sand, Wind, and War is the life story of a man who not only helped shape events in one part of the world but also contributed to our understanding of it. It is a significant benchmark not only in the history of science, but also in the annals of adventure.

Book excerpt: Most people celebrate their half century birthday surrounded by family and friends. Sam Chapman is unlike most people. He decides turning fifty deserves a special celebration, and embarks upon a road trip across America, one that reveals the many layers of Sam's inner soul. With only a map in the glove box and some cash and a credit card in his wallet, Sam begins a journey that will forever change his life. Over the course of ten days, Sam drives from his home in Provincetown, Massachusetts to meet his best friend, who lives in Bishop, California. The three thousand mile road trip becomes an excursion filled with beautiful scenery, remarkable villages and towns and several interludes with nature. Along the way, Sam meets a variety of characters and discovers parts of the country that are magical, mysterious, and redefine the meaning of natural beauty. Ten stops in as many days lead the way to Sam's half-century birthday celebration, and pave a new meaning of getting from Point A to Point B. Road Trip will take you on a back seat adventure to undiscovered towns tucked throughout 14 states across America. Reading this novel will inspire readers to step back in time, when traveling was something to be enjoyed and savored, not merely endured.

Book excerpt: When Clyde Eddy first saw the Colorado River in 1919, he vowed that he would someday travel its length. Eight years later, Eddy recruited a handful of college students to serve as crewmen and loaded them, a hobo, a mongrel dog, a bear cub, and a heavy motion picture camera into three mahogany boats and left Green River, Utah, headed for Needles, California. Forty-two days and eight hundred miles later, they were the first to successfully navigate the river during its annual high water period. This book is the original narrative of that foolhardy and thrilling adventure. “The point of his great adventure is not to make a name for himself, or to profit from a documentary film, or even to prove that quiet men of intellect can be as courageous as brawny frontiersmen. The point is the journey itself, the satisfaction of attempting the near impossible, and of surviving to tell the tale.”--Peter Miller, National Geographic Magazine, from the Foreword
