Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smith's Strangers' Guide to Liverpool: Its Environs, and Part of Cheshire, for 1843 The Publisher Of the strangers guide TO liverpool trusts that the following pages will be found useful, not only as a silent Cicerone to the stranger, enabling him to spend, with plea sure and profit, a few days in this seat of commerce, but that they will Open up to the resident much that is interesting, as well as new. In compressing an account Of every public building, institu tion, and Object of note in Liverpool, into a space so small, as to enable the work to be afforded at a moderate price, care has been taken to omit nothing Of importance and the arrangement which has been adopted, is that best suited to the wants Of the stranger. For his special use an itinerary has been added, together with an appendix, containing such lists for reference as are most required. In connexion with the descriptive matter, interesting statistical information has been introduced whenever practicable or useful. This department might have been extended, but while we write the figures, the facts are changing, and it is, therefore, needless to give numbers of only present value. Book excerpt: Liverpool was the first British port of call for most American travelers in the nineteenth century—and though some, like sour wordsmith Henry James, preferred to describe the more picturesque Chester, many left accounts of their experiences in the city. This volume unearths some of these richly detailed passages—by the likes of Herman Melville, writing on the Liverpool docks, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, recording his years as American consul—and pairs them with other fascinating glimpses of a Liverpool past by such towering historical figures as Harriet Beecher Stowe, John James Audubon, and Frederick Douglass. The excerpts collected here paint a portrait of Liverpool through American eyes—and demonstrate the rich variety of cultural contacts between the two nations during centuries gone by.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between archaeological tourism and professional archaeology. To do so, it explores the connection – most visibly through nationalism and global capitalism - from its origins in the early modern period to World War II. How separate is the development of archaeological tourism from that of the formation of archaeology as a discipline? And do the fields operate in two different worlds? Scholarly discussions have largely treated them as distinct fields with no connection, while histories of archaeology, in particular, have focused on aspects such as the history of archaeological discoveries, archaeological thought and, more recently, the political relationship between archaeology and nationalism and other ideologies. Largely missing from all these accounts has been an examination of how archaeology has been incorporated into society, for example through something that all humans enjoy – leisure – in the form of archaeological tourism. Moreover, just as histories of archaeology have largely ignored the connection between archaeology and tourism, so too has tourism in the reverse direction. Recent studies on tourism have centered on topics such as economy (sustainable and recession tourism) and new types of tourism (including ecotourism and medical tourism).
