Book excerpt: Programs to improve the performance of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) through clustering is now becoming the design of industrial and innovation policies which is implemented by policy makers in Indonesia. There has been a common perception that clusters are able to encourage entrepreneurship, learning, and productivity improvements for MSEs more effectively. This common perception, however, should be further explored whether clustered MSEs successfully obtain "collective efficiency" from clusters or they even suffer from "collective failure". This book is an attempt to reveal such issues of MSEs clustering by presenting a case study on small industrial clusters in Central Java which is well known as the "heartland" of MSEs operate in clusters. While supporting programs are persistently introduced to such clusters, in fact, to obtain "the collective efficiency of clustering" is not so easy. Unfair competition accompanied by ineffective cooperation might be factors that cause to clustered MSEs failed to gain the benefit of clustering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, has experienced a remarkable economic transformation over the past 30 years. In the mid 1960s it was one of the poorest countries in the developing world, but by the 1990s it had joined the group of Asian 'tiger' economies. This set of essays examines the record of industrialization, which has been central to Indonesia's rapid development. Successive sections provide an overview of the industrialization process, case studies of selected industries, the contribution of foreign investment and technological development, the role of small-medium industry, and a range of industrial policy issues. Drawing on the country's much improved statistical base, this empirically oriented volume highlights both the achievements of the 'New Order' regime and the many challenges which lie ahead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and competitiveness are realities that must be faced by small and medium industry today. Government in the implementation process of the industrial development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), should see this reality and be a decisive consideration in any policy to be issued, as well as a paradigm that must be faced by any country in implementing industrialization process. Industry cluster in Indonesia is one of the policies adopted by the government in promoting small and medium industries. Survival and the success of an industrial cluster is dependent in part on whether the industry in the cluster have the power to live. This study aims to analyze the internal and external factors that affect the viability of industry, in order to get a model study of how to improve the viability of industry in the industrial cluster. These factors are age of maturity, product diversity, macroeconomic stability that affected the business climate, and government regulation. Population of research consists of entrepreneurs in the garment and metal centers in Small and Medium Industry “PIK Pulogadung”, East Jakarta, Indonesia. Regression model was chosen to measure the influence of independent variables affecting the viability of the industry in the cluster. The results showed that all independent variables significantly affect the viability of industry in the cluster, unless government regulation variable. The study revealed that 61% of variation data viability of industry is explained by independent variables, indicated by the R2.Government regulation was not affected significantly in this study, needs to get more attention. We know that operational of industrial cluster was managed by the local government cluster. In this cluster, government regulation is not significant, due to the lack of facilitation of production/promotion.

Book excerpt: Economic challenges in developing Asian countries have become more complex: urban populations are growing at great cost to the environment, climate change has increased risks of natural disasters, and income gaps within and between developing countries are widening. These factors threaten the sustainable growth and development of urban areas, the drivers of Asia's economy. A strategic approach for inclusive growth is needed. The City Cluster Economic Development approach provides a strategic framework and a set of analytical tools, which governments, businesses, and communities can use to support the inclusive and sustainable development of competitive urban economies in Asia. Said approach was developed and tested by the Asian Development Bank to improve the basis for integrated planning and development of urban regions in Asia and the Pacific. It also elps urban managers and other city stakeholders identify action plans and determine priority investment areas.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume examines why small-scale enterprises have performed so well in Indonesia, given that the country’s labour force is expected to expand and urbanise rapidly between 1995 and 2025. It also considers what future contribution small-scale enterprises could make. Peter van Diermen explores the industrial organisation of family businesses, local development in a global context and family businesses in Jakarta in considering the unexpected success of small-scale enterprises and the future contributions they could make.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: As in many other LDCs, in Indonesia small-scale industries (SSIs) are important, particularly with respect to the creation of employment opportunities. SSIs are expected to absorb many millions of workers who have been displaced by current economic crisis. This work seeks to explain the pattern of development of SSIs in Indonesia within a broader theoretical framework. It also deals with a number of SSI development-related aspects that in Indonesia so far have never or rarely been studied, such as the formation of strategic alliance, cluster development, and application of theories of flexible specialization to the LDCs. The book also tries to examine empirically the effects of the current economic crisis and to assess theoretically the likely impact of the full implementation of the agreed IMF reform package on SSI development in the country. Main problems faced by small producers and the government policy environment are highlighted through several detailed examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explains why there persists a divergence of academia-industry-government inter-linkage in the Indonesian science system. This divergence constrains the capacity of the science system in localizing knowledge from the supply chain linkage and demonstrates the centralized character of the Indonesian science system. Additionally, the book shows that the Jababeka Industrial Cluster is shaped by the supply chain linkage and, thus, lacks the capacity of a knowledge cluster. Therefore, horizontal collaboration between academia-industry is restricted and limited. Dissertation. (Series: ZEF Development Studies - Vol. 27)
