Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and important work studies Kenya's small scale manufacturers. What makes the book unique is Gray's sub-sector approach, which focuses on the particular industries of tailoring, woodwork and metalwork. Gray investigates the development of these sub-sectors by taking a strategic management approach. Such an approach allows the author to assess enterprise competitiveness and profitability within industries. Readers will find that the information in this book serves as a well-needed supplement to the literature on the World Bank's July 1995 decision to focus more on micro-enterprise development. The book will appeal to many different audiences including development agencies concerned with the economic development community and the international academic community. Business and social science students who are interested in how work is organized in the family and the effects of modernization on traditional society will also benefit from reading this book.

Book excerpt: In Sub-Sahara Africa, the sector of informal micro-enterprises (IMEs) is already employing a large share of the labour force in both urban and rural areas. This study reviews the ways in which the owners and workers of IMEs have acquired their vocational and management skills. It reviews the contributions of all the different training providers, including public sector training institutes, private sector training providers, and training centres run by NGOs and other non-profit organizations. The study finds that informal apprenticeship training is by far the most common source of various skills - in some countries it is likely to be responsible for 80-90% of all ongoing training efforts. Informal apprenticeship training presents a number of important advantages. At the same time it has a number of limitations. The study concludes that there is a major challenge to improve the transfer of relevant skills to IME operators, both through pre-employment training and skills upgrading. In view of the scope of the challenge to provide hundreds of thousands IME owners and workers, as well as large numbers of out of school youths with relevant practical and management skills, it suggests to build upon the strengths of the existing practices of informal apprenticeship training and to remedy its weaknesses by involving professional training providers in upgrading its training organization and delivery, quality and efficiency, and final training outcomes. It reviews the results of a number of innovative interventions in different African countries that are working in this direction. Finally, the study suggests that there is an interesting potential in ‘business-embedded training’ provided by private companies as part of their regular business operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines some of the major challenges faced by African education by placing them in two important contexts. First, it explores how new economic dynamics, linked to globalisation, impact upon educational priorities and possibilities. Second, it stresses the need to locate educational policies and practices alongside approaches in other sectors. This leads to an analysis of the intersections between education, training and enterprise development. Through detailed examinations of recent policies and practices in Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, the book shows how different national approaches emerge in spite of apparent convergences in donor agency policy and international policy discourses. Aimed at policy makers and practitioners as well as academics, the book outlines a series of theoretical, policy and practical challenges for the future of African education and its broader role in development.

Book excerpt: This book is about business in Kenya. Starting from theories of institutions as formal and informal rules that shape human behaviour, it examines the institutional context for business and the ways in which firms and other organisations are formed, operate, and interact. Some of the institutions are internal to Kenya, but others are regional, continental or global in their origins and impact. The book examines how these institutions interact to create incentives for certain types of investment, and disincentives for others. It also discusses the strategies that government can adopt to strengthen the Kenyan business system and make it more competitive. The book originated in a three-year research project on Business Systems in Africa carried out as part of a collaboration between the Institute for Development Studies of the University of Nairobi, and the Centre for Development Research, Copenhagen. The studies involved more than a dozen researchers in an examination of the influence of political, economic and social institutions on Kenyan firms of all sizes. Its approach, which uses sectors of the economy as lenses through which to view the business system, has provided a rich tapestry of information useful for policymakers, students and scholars. The editors are based at the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi. Dorothy McCormick is Associate Research Professor and Director of the Institute. She specialises in industrial development with particular emphasis on micro and small enterprises. Patrick O. Alila is Research Professor and was the Institute's Director from 1995 to 2001. Trained in political science and development administration, he specialises in rural development and local level institutions. Mary Omosa is Senior Research Fellow and University of Nairobi UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair. Her major research focus is on development sociology and rural livelihoods.
