Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a unified, complete, and self-contained exposition of the main algebraic theorems of invariant theory for matrices in a characteristic free approach. More precisely, it contains the description of polynomial functions in several variables on the set of matrices with coefficients in an infinite field or even the ring of integers, invariant under simultaneous conjugation. Following Hermann Weyl's classical approach, the ring of invariants is described by formulating and proving (1) the first fundamental theorem that describes a set of generators in the ring of invariants, and (2) the second fundamental theorem that describes relations between these generators. The authors study both the case of matrices over a field of characteristic 0 and the case of matrices over a field of positive characteristic. While the case of characteristic 0 can be treated following a classical approach, the case of positive characteristic (developed by Donkin and Zubkov) is much harder. A presentation of this case requires the development of a collection of tools. These tools and their application to the study of invariants are exlained in an elementary, self-contained way in the book.

Book excerpt: In this work we consider the problem of determining information about representations as the rank grows large, in fact, tends to infinity. Here we show that the set of dominant weights stabilizes as the rank goes to infinity and the multiplicities become polynomials in the rank. In addition, we give effective, easily computable algorithms for determining the set of dominant weights and illustrate how to calculate their multiplicity polynomials.

Book excerpt: Numerous publications have attested to the therapeutic efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and low-intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). These methods have been used in the treatment of various neurological-related conditions, such as chronic pain, cognitive disorders, movement disorders, or stroke rehabilitation. Across these different fields, evidence suggests therapeutic efficacy could be improved when combining NIBS technique in combination with another type of more commonly utilized therapeutic approaches (e.g., motor and/or cognitive training, pharmacological, physical and neurorehabilitation).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exa-scale computing needs to re-examine the existing hardware platform that can support intensive data-oriented computing. Since the main bottleneck is from memory, we aim to develop an energy-efficient in-memory computing platform in this book. First, the models of spin-transfer torque magnetic tunnel junction and racetrack memory are presented. Next, we show that the spintronics could be a candidate for future data-oriented computing for storage, logic, and interconnect. As a result, by utilizing spintronics, in-memory-based computing has been applied for data encryption and machine learning. The implementations of in-memory AES, Simon cipher, as well as interconnect are explained in details. In addition, in-memory-based machine learning and face recognition are also illustrated in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various novel analytical and numerical methods for solving partial and fractional differential equations. Moreover, it presents selected numerical methods for solving stochastic point kinetic equations in nuclear reactor dynamics by using Euler–Maruyama and strong-order Taylor numerical methods. The book also shows how to arrive at new, exact solutions to various fractional differential equations, such as the time-fractional Burgers–Hopf equation, the (3+1)-dimensional time-fractional Khokhlov–Zabolotskaya–Kuznetsov equation, (3+1)-dimensional time-fractional KdV–Khokhlov–Zabolotskaya–Kuznetsov equation, fractional (2+1)-dimensional Davey–Stewartson equation, and integrable Davey–Stewartson-type equation. Many of the methods discussed are analytical–numerical, namely the modified decomposition method, a new two-step Adomian decomposition method, new approach to the Adomian decomposition method, modified homotopy analysis method with Fourier transform, modified fractional reduced differential transform method (MFRDTM), coupled fractional reduced differential transform method (CFRDTM), optimal homotopy asymptotic method, first integral method, and a solution procedure based on Haar wavelets and the operational matrices with function approximation. The book proposes for the first time a generalized order operational matrix of Haar wavelets, as well as new techniques (MFRDTM and CFRDTM) for solving fractional differential equations. Numerical methods used to solve stochastic point kinetic equations, like the Wiener process, Euler–Maruyama, and order 1.5 strong Taylor methods, are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher dimensional theories have attracted much attention because they make it possible to reduce much of physics in a concise, elegant fashion that unifies the two great theories of the 20th century: Quantum Theory and Relativity. This book provides an elementary description of quantum wave equations in higher dimensions at an advanced level so as to put all current mathematical and physical concepts and techniques at the reader’s disposal. A comprehensive description of quantum wave equations in higher dimensions and their broad range of applications in quantum mechanics is provided, which complements the traditional coverage found in the existing quantum mechanics textbooks and gives scientists a fresh outlook on quantum systems in all branches of physics. In Parts I and II the basic properties of the SO(n) group are reviewed and basic theories and techniques related to wave equations in higher dimensions are introduced. Parts III and IV cover important quantum systems in the framework of non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics in terms of the theories presented in Part II. In particular, the Levinson theorem and the generalized hypervirial theorem in higher dimensions, the Schrödinger equation with position-dependent mass and the Kaluza-Klein theory in higher dimensions are investigated. In this context, the dependence of the energy levels on the dimension is shown. Finally, Part V contains conclusions, outlooks and an extensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independent Component Analysis (ICA) has recently become an important tool for modelling and understanding empirical datasets. It is a method of separating out independent sources from linearly mixed data, and belongs to the class of general linear models. ICA provides a better decomposition than other well-known models such as principal component analysis. This self-contained book contains a structured series of edited papers by leading researchers in the field, including an extensive introduction to ICA. The major theoretical bases are reviewed from a modern perspective, current developments are surveyed and many case studies of applications are described in detail. The latter include biomedical examples, signal and image denoising and mobile communications. ICA is discussed in the framework of general linear models, but also in comparison with other paradigms such as neural network and graphical modelling methods. The book is ideal for researchers and graduate students in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present the concepts, methods and applications of kinetic theory to rarefied gas dynamics. After introducing the basic tools, problems in plane geometry are treated using approximation techniques (perturbation and numerical methods). These same techniques are later used to deal with two- and three-dimensional problems. The models include not only monatomic but also polyatomic gases, mixtures, chemical reactions. A special chapter is devoted to evaporation and condensation phenomena. Each section is accompanied by problems which are mainly intended to demonstrate the use of the material in the text and to outline additional subjects, results and equations. This will help ensure that the book can be used for a range of graduate courses in aerospace engineering or applied mathematics.
