Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slow Ball Cartoonist takes readers on a journey to an earlier era in America when cartoonists played a pivotal role each day in enabling major daily newspapers to touch the lives of their readers. No American cartoonist was more influential than the Chicago Tribunes John T. McCutcheon, the plainspoken Indiana native and Purdue University graduate whose charming and delightful cartoons graced the pages of the newspaper from 1903 until his retirement in 1946. This book chronicles McCutcheons adventure-filled life, from his birth on a rural small farm near Lafayette in 1870, to his rise as the Dean of American Cartoonists. His famous cartoon, "Injun Summer", originally published in 1907, was a celebration of autumn through childlike imagination and made an annual appearance in the Tribune each fall for decades. McCutcheon was the first Tribune staff member to earn the coveted Pulitzer Prize for his poignant 1931 cartoon about a victim of bank failure at the height of the Great Depression. Born with an itch for adventure, McCutcheon served as a World War I correspondent, combat artist, occasional feature writer, portrait artist, and world traveler. While the gangly and tall McCutcheon looked the part of the down-home characters featured in his cartoons, the world-wise flavor of his work influenced public opinion while making readers smile. Hard-hitting and even vicious attacks on public figures were common among his contemporaries; however, McCutcheons gentle humor provided a change in pace, thus prompting a colleague to borrow a phrase from baseball and anoint him the slow ball cartoonist. Slow Ball Cartoonist is a timeless story about a humble man who made the most of his talents and lived life to the fullest, being respectful and fair to allincluding the targets of his cartoonists pen.

Book excerpt: This book examines the multi-media explosion of contemporary political satire. Rooted in 18th century Augustan practice, satire’s indelible link with politics underlies today’s universal disgust with the ways of elected politicians. This study interrogates the impact of British and American satirical media on political life, with a special focus on political cartoons and the levelling humour of Australasian satirists.

Book Synopsis Louis Sockalexis by : David L. Fleitz
Download or read book Louis Sockalexis written by David L. Fleitz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2002-10-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Sockalexis, a Penobscot Indian from Maine, was one of the greatest college baseball stars of the 1890s. Following his days playing for Holy Cross and Notre Dame, he went directly into the major leagues with Cleveland's National League team in 1897, becoming the first of his race to play in the majors and the first minority athlete to play in the National League. This is a complete biography of Sockalexis, known during his playing days as "Chief of Sockem" and "Deerfoot of the Diamond." For three months, Sockalexis batted well over .300, hit home runs, and made incredible throws from the outfield, but he found it difficult to adjust to playing in the major leagues. He often found himself the object of ridicule and hatred from sportswriters and fans in other cities. Sockalexis began drinking heavily and was suspended by the Cleveland team for playing while intoxicated. His alcoholism brought his career to an unfortunate and premature end in 1899, and he died in 1913 at the age of 42. Shortly after his death, Cleveland's American League team was named the Indians and Chief Wahoo was adopted as its mascot, something that has sparked controversy in recent years and brought attention to Sockalexis once again.

Book Synopsis The Battle of Base-Ball by : C.H. Claudy
Download or read book The Battle of Base-Ball written by C.H. Claudy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.H. Claudy might have trouble finding a publisher for his Battle of Base-ball today. His yoking of baseball to warfare--accounts of ways to "cripple the enemy" and descriptions of managers as "battlefield generals"--to teach the young and inexperienced about the game would not likely be applauded in the age of political correctness. But as Claudy says in his preface, "The points of similarity are actual, not imagined," and he spends most of the book, meant to be both instructional and historical, demonstrating his assertion. Originally published in 1912, this work consists of chapters on batting, running, offensive game planning, the pitcher-catcher battery, fielding, defensive strategy, umpiring, drills (titled "Battlefield and Arms"), major league regulations, and A.G. Spalding's organizational rules. Christy Mathewson's "How I Became a Big-League Pitcher" is also included.

Book Synopsis Kings of the Diamond by : Robert T. Diamond

Book excerpt: Kings of the Diamond is based on historical events in Winnipeg in 1950, drawing on the city¿s great sporting heritage. The main storyline follows the 1950 season of the Northern Hotel team of the Twentieth Century Community Softball League, the powerhouse team that went on to play in the Western Canada Softball Championship that year under the direction of the story¿s chief protagonist ¿ author Robert Diamond¿s father, Lazar Diamond. That legacy is brought to life in this story of the Diamond family and the Northern Hotel and of many of the players and principals of the Twentieth Century Community Softball League. The entire narrative builds inexorably towards the final championship game, when 8,000 people crammed the Aberdeen School Grounds to watch it. Kings of the Diamond is the story of one of the most colourful chapters in the sporting and cultural history of Winnipeg, and of the legendary characters who were the main players on this stage. It is also a story of family and friendships that survive tests of emotional strength, love, and commitment, and of how they find final vindication. From Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz¿ foreword: ¿Winnipeg had its share of larger than life characters in those days. [The author] aptly and authentically describes them all in this tale of Winnipeg sports and other games ... Ex-pat Robert Diamond pays homage to his hometown, offering fascinating insights into how Winnipeg earned its moniker, the Chicago of the North, and to a very special era in softball history.¿

Book Synopsis Wee Willie Sherdel by : John G. Coulson
Download or read book Wee Willie Sherdel written by John G. Coulson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wee Willie Sherdel was a very humble, courageous left-handed pitcher who became one of the all-time great southpaws in St. Louis Cardinals history. The son of a German blacksmith in a small Pennsylvania village, Willie’s dream was to become a major league pitcher – a rather big dream for a small boy. Not the most talented or biggest, he worked hard and learned from greats like Eddie Plank, Branch Rickey and Grover Cleveland Alexander. Sherdel’s best years were in the 1920s while Rickey was developing the farm system concept and the Cards were playing in two World Series. Known for his slow ball, Willie was given the honor of pitching the first game against Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and the powerful Yankees in both Series. Although labeled a hard-luck pitcher in the Series, Sherdel performed many great feats on the diamond. Since his retirement in 1932, he remains the Redbirds’ winningest left-hander and fourth all-time winner. Willie also has pitched the third-most games and the fourth-most innings. Like all pitchers, he loved to talk about his hitting. Among Cardinals’ pitchers, Sherdel owns the fourth-most career home runs and the fifth-best batting average for his .337 in 1923. His contemporaries included over 90 Hall of Famers and some of the greatest players of all-time including Ruth, Gehrig, Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby.
Book Synopsis The Days of Wee Willie, Old Cy and Baseball War by : Chuck Kimberly
Download or read book The Days of Wee Willie, Old Cy and Baseball War written by Chuck Kimberly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of the four baseball seasons of 1900 through 1903 seeks to capture the flavor of the period by providing yearly overviews from the standpoint of each team and by focusing more deeply on 30 or more players of the era--not only such legendary stars as Cy Young and Willie Keeler, but also relative unknowns such as Bill Keister and Kip Selbach. Each team section is supplemented by a table providing the significant batting and pitching statistics for each regular team member. The major theme of the period was the baseball war between the National and American leagues from 1900 to 1903. But the broad multi-season, multi-team view allows varying the focus. The pennant races receive due attention but there are other aspects of the baseball drama, such as: the aging star who finds a way to extend his period of dominance (Cy Young); the young, unpolished phenom whose raw talent enables him to excel (Christy Mathewson); and the fierce competitor who risks injury to help his team (Joe McGinnity or Deacon Phillippe).
