Book excerpt: This book is the first to give a comprehensive and detailed overview of the complete geography of Slovenia in English. Only very few countries, even considerably larger ones, can boast the landscape diversity found in Slovenia since the Alps, the Pannonian Basin, the Dinaric Alps, and the Mediterranean meet and interweave in this small corner of Central Europe, as do Germanic, Hungarian, Slavic, and Romance cultural influences. The book provides a systematical overview of physical and human geographical elements of Slovenia from landforms to cultural characteristics. Special attention is given to landscape diversity, to the presentation of Slovene landscape types and regions, to some particularities and interesting facts of Slovenia, and to the position of Slovenia in the World. The book also illustrates some other important geographical phenomena, processes and interactions between nature and society in nowadays Slovenia. This volume appeals to researchers as well as students in the field of regional geography. It can also serve as a source for complete background information as well as a field guide for Slovenia.

Book excerpt: This 2002 Article IV Consultation highlights that the economic growth of Slovenia slowed in 2001 from about 4.5 percent to about 3 percent as domestic demand fell sharply and external demand weakened. Competitiveness remained strong and the current account deficit narrowed to about 1⁄2 percentage point of GDP. Real export growth decelerated from 12.7 percent in 2000 to 7.9 percent in the first three quarters of 2001. The planned reduction in the budget deficit in 2001 did not materialize because of expenditure overruns.

Book excerpt: Editor Biography: Frane Adam, Prof. Dr., at the University of Ljubljana and Head (Director) of private, non-profit research organization (IRSA) is dealing recently mainly with project management, mentorship for doctoral students and publications. More on his international publications and received citations can be found in Scopus, Web of Science or Google Scholar. His research interest lies at the intersection of political and economic sociology and social studies of science and technology. He wrote extensively on two topics, comparative analysis of innovation performance and knowledge transfer as well as on the elite change and democracy in Eastern Europe. Book Description: This book analyzes the characteristics and outcomes of the transition process in Slovenia, a relatively young and independent country, from different perspectives. It presents its main achievements as well as its current dilemmas and challenges, among them the causes for systemic dysfunctions, political instability and weak social integration. It is a collection of readings from various scientific disciplines and professions, as well as from different generations of researchers. The approach to the analysis is multidisciplinary and comparative. It combines the fields of sociology, history, geography, political science, law, economics, environmental studies as well as their subfields and intersections. It is an interdisciplinary work in the true sense of the word, based on previous studies and discussions of the status and trends of social development in Slovenia. It should be stressed that the Slovenian authors summarize and critically evaluate the findings, and interpretations of international authors (authors who observe Slovenian society from an external perspective) and who concentrated on a certain aspect of social dynamics follow. It presents the post-transitional challenges in the field of RD and I, rule of law, civil society, human capital and problems with the employment of graduates, the role of meritocratic principles in selection of candidates for leading positions, structural budget deficits and problems with indebtedness. Also, aspects of sustainable regional development, which are all aspects of the future society, are elaborated upon. The compendium is divided into four parts. First is the introductory part, which is followed by the legal-political aspect. The third section covers the socio-economic part, and finally the environmental aspect and sustainable development including organic farming and tourism is presented in the fourth section. The authors believe that this book will provoke interest both with social scientists who deal with Eastern European studies, as well as with those who are particularly interested in Slovenia, its history, and in particular, its political, economic, cultural and ecological developments since its independence. The volume will also be interesting for think-tanks who are seeking economic and political information about the current situation and trends in Slovenia, journalists and students of history, anthropology or sociology of Eastern Europe as well as experts of Slavic studies. Target Audience: -Social scientists and researchers from humanities specialized for Eastern European Studies -Journalists and think-tanks who are seeking economic and political information about the current situation and trends in Slovenia -Students studying history, anthropology or sociology of Eastern Europe -Expert for Slavic studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conducting rural criminological research exposes researchers to concerns such as absence or inadequate official data about crime and superficial rural-urban comparisons, rural isolation and distance from the researchers’ office to the study site, and lack of services or access to justice. This distinct cultural context means that studying rural crime requires creatively adapting existing research methods. Conducting research about or in rural settings requires unique researcher preparation, as everything from defining the space at the conception of a project to collecting and analyzing data differs from urban research. This book explores the various issues, challenges, and solutions for rural researchers in criminology. Integrating state of the art methodological approaches with practical illustrations, this book serves as an internationally comprehensive compendium of methods for students, scholars, and practitioners. While contributing to the growing field of rural criminology, it will also be of interest to those engaged with the related areas of rural health care, rural social work, and rural poverty.

Book excerpt: Ronnie Lessem and Alexander Schieffer's Integral Green Society and Economy series has three overarching aims. The first is to link together two major movements of our time, one philosophical, the other practical. The philosophical movement is towards what many today are calling an 'integral' age, while the practical is the 'green' movement, duly aligned with that of sustainable development. The second is to blend together elements of nature and community, culture and spirituality, science and technology, politics and economics, thus serving to bring about an 'integral green' vision, albeit with a focus on business and economics. As such, the authors transcend the limitations to sustainable development and environmental economics, which are overly ecological, if not also technological, in orientation, and exclude social and cultural elements. Thirdly, this particular volume, with Darja Piciga, focuses specifically on Slovenia, as well as on Europe generally, drawing on the particular issues and capacities that this country and continent represents, particularly for sustainable development and social knowledge-based economy. The emphasis on Slovenia arose, not only because it lies at the heart of Europe, but because a specific movement for an Integral Green Slovenian Society and Economy, has been co-evolved there, by the three editors in conjunction with Slovene organisations, communities and movements, with a view to integrating existing and emerging knowledge resources, initiatives and practices into a model, as an alternative to austerity, for Slovenia and other European countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) conducts peer reviews of individual members once every five to six years. Reviews seek to improve the quality and effectiveness of members’ development co-operation, highlighting good practices and recommending improvements. Slovenia's official development assistance to Gross National Income ratio increased from 0.16% in 2017 to 0.19% in 2021, with a temporary uptick to 0.29% in 2022. This increase was mainly due to in-donor refugee costs related to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Slovenia punches above its weight as it influences decision-making in multilateral organisations in line with its priorities, notably on water and gender. Partners value its strong support to the Western Balkans, anchored in its European Union accession experience, as well as its support to demining efforts around the world. This peer review provides a set of recommendations to focus its approach, ensure cross-government co-ordination, match financial and human resources to ambitions, and build stronger relationships with partners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Second World War, Yugoslavia’s small regional cities represented a challenge for the new socialist state. These cities’ older buildings, local historic sites, and low-quality housing clashed with socialism’s promises and ideals. How would the state transform these cities’ everyday neighborhoods? In the Slovene republic’s capital city of Ljubljana, the Trnovo neighborhood embodied this challenge through its modest housing, small medieval section, vast gardens, acclaimed interwar architecture, and iconic local reputation. Imagining Slovene Socialist Modernity explores how urban planners, architects, historic preservationists, neighborhood residents, and even folklorists transformed this beloved neighborhood into a Slovene socialist city district. Aplenc demonstrates that this urban redesign centered on republic-level interpretations of a Yugoslav socialist built environment, versus a re-envisioned Slovene national past or design style. This interdisciplinary study sheds light on how Yugoslav state socialism operated at the republic level, within a decentralized system, and on the diverse forces behind success or failure. With its focus on vernacular architecture, small-scale historic sites, single-family homes, and illegal housing, this book expands our understanding of the everyday built environment in socialist cities.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Politics - Other International Politics Topics, grade: 1,0, , course: Course: Electoral Systems, Summer Semester 2021, language: English, abstract: This paper describes and compares the parliamentary electoral systems of two successor states of Yugoslavia: Slovenia in the very North of the former federation and (North) Macedonia in the very South. Surprisingly, this comparison is rarely done, although both states have in common a relatively similar size and number of populations of around two million inhabitants. This semester paper portrays that the design of an electoral system and historic legacies are important for a (transitional) democracy, but only till a certain, limited extent. Apart from relatively similar electoral systems in the here portrayed cases, the international and domestic as well as qualitative and quantitative studies showed, that political culture and how citizens and politicians are acting in a (democratic) states are also and probably more important than the design of an electoral system. Also, the EU integration process, lively EU membership and economic development could have an influence on functionality of transitional democracies. Especially, the differing partisanship culture is an interesting field of active citizenship behavior.
