Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper on the Slovak Republic reviews efficiency and reform of the health sector. The immediate challenge for the health care system in the Slovak Republic is to improve health sector outcomes while containing public health spending. The Slovak health care system is decentralized, and the central government has limited control over decisions by insurance companies and health care institutions. The government has introduced limits on administrative costs of insurance companies and submitted proposals to regulate their profits with the aim of diverting resources to health care providers.

The paper investigates the reasons why the Slovak unemployment rate has been considerably higher than the Czech unemployment rate. The paper highlights that the predominant cause is that employment in Slovakia declined more sharply than in the Czech Republic, particularly in 1991. The paper also analyzes the fiscal outlook for the Slovak Republic in 1995 and in the medium term. Monetary policy issues in 1994–95 are also examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2010 Article IV Consultation discusses Czech Republic’s economic condition. The Czech economy’s fundamentals were strong prior to the global economic and financial crisis. However, owing to its highly open nature, the economy was hit by spillover effects. A downturn in the euro area depressed exports while investment declined owing to a drop in FDI and the tightening of banks’ lending standards. Monetary and fiscal easing provided helpful stimulus, thereby cushioning the economic downturn.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper assesses the efficiency of public spending on health and education in Hungary, with a view to identifying potential efficiency gains and areas for reforms so as to lock in such gains. The paper finds potentially large room for efficiency gains over the medium term, particularly in the health sector. A frontier analysis using data envelopment methodology, suggests that savings from efficiency gains in the health and education sectors could amount up to about 3 percentage points of GDP over the medium term, of which 90 percent could be achieved from efficiency gains in the health sector.

This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper examines the state of labor supply in the Czech Republic. The Czech working age population is projected to decline. This has important implications for labor supply and long-term growth. Policies to increase participation rates and retirement age are important and can mitigate the decline in labor force, but are unlikely to offset it. Under a combined moderate policy improvement scenario, the labor force is expected to decline by 3 percent in 2030 and 15 percent in 2050. Under the very optimistic (hence less likely) scenario, the labor force would increase by 3 percentage points by 2030, but then start to decline later with a gap of 8 percent by 2050.
