Book excerpt: An old hermit monk journeys to the edge of a vast plain of long grass and resides under a great Bent Tree, where also rests a sleeping tiger. While there, he is visited by various characters who seek some solution to their life problems. The old man uses tales, debate and taoist philosophy to help them weave their way back into a happier tapestry of life. These tales mix humour with deep thought, which at first confounds, but always enlightens in the end. Far from the Road, the road more or less travelled, there is, under the Bent Tree, surrounded by long grass, an Old Man and a sleeping Tiger. That is to say that sometimes the man sleeps and sometimes the tiger sleeps. There are times too that both sleep, but because there is always peace, there are never times that both do not sleep. Strangely too, there is always one tiger for one man or one woman...never more , never less. What does this mean? We know the road is life, more or less travelled. We know the long grass is the vagueness of fates between living and wisdom. We "see" things in the distances of our destiny but how do we get there? Do we want to get there? The Bent Tree is easy. It is Death and it is Wisdom. For all knowledge comes with Death, the Great Portal...and then, that is the end of all Knowledge. Which is Wisdom also. The Death of all Knowledge. Under the Bent Tree, knowledge sleeps. We are left to explain a man and a tiger. The tiger sleeps and the man is awake. The man is Logic, Reason, Consciousness. The man sleeps and the tiger roams. Do not be alarmed, however. Though the tiger is indeed a man or woman's passions, without reason and logic, passion is only passion. It is Natural. It creates. It knows nothing of evil. Unless the man or woman awakens also. Then we have a soul to deal with.

Book excerpt: A Sleeping Tiger is a rare book-length treatment of urbanization among Dayaks and also offers a fresh perspective on ethnicity, class, and the context in which they function to the benefit of some and the great detriment of others. Although readers may never have heard of Dayaks (the indigenous, largely non-Muslim peoples of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo), they have surely witnessed the impact of ethnicity and class on the world today. Dayaks have hardly been spared this impact. Formerly forest dwellers in the main, Dayaks have been migrating en masse into Sarawak's towns and cities, but despite their better efforts to succeed in the urban environment, they feel demeaned and disadvantaged relative to the other ethnic groups of Malaysia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauty, grace and power make the tiger one of the world's most loved animals, yet it is precisely these qualities that have been its downfall. Poaching for skins and body parts, loss of habitat and prey and conflicts between people and wild tigers have caused catastrophic declines in tiger numbers throughout their range. If wild tigers are to survive through the next century, we must act now. Riding the Tiger is a comprehensive, scientific and eminently readable account of the problems and possible solutions of securing a future for wild tigers. Lavishly illustrated in full colour, it is written by leading conservationists working throughout Asia. It is a vital information resource for tiger conservationists in the field, necessary reading for serious students of carnivore conservation and conservation biologists in general, and an accessible overview of tiger conservation for general readers.

Book excerpt: Addiction and Recovery: What Everyone Should Know By: Dr. Agyenim Akuamoah‐Boateng "Dr. Boat" Addiction is a terrible disease and affects families, loved ones, friends and to some extent, everyone in the community. Addiction and Recovery: What Everyone Should Know explains the basic understanding of addiction or drug and alcohol dependency and recovery process: myths about addiction and recovery; recovery process and expectations; recovery and relapse prevention strategies; and a road map for recovery. This book is written not necessarily for individuals dealing with mental health and substance use disorders, but for millions of people who are eager to understand this progressive disease of addiction. It is important to know how to intervene, what and when to say anything to ensure effective communication to help motivate and support individuals struggling with substance use disorders to quit, without the consequences of making them angry and trigger cravings and usage. It is my hope that this book will also help Behavioral Health Clinicians (BHC), especially new graduates and those with no history of alcohol and drug abuse and are intimidated and made infective in their substance abuse professional counseling practices by utterances from addicts, such as, “How can you talk to me about drug abuse when you have never tried any illicit drugs?” or “I will only listen to a person who has been there and done the drugs I’m using.” As the adage goes, “you can’t do right with a do wrong mind.” It is, therefore, incumbent upon every citizen to learn and acquire some basic knowledge about addiction and recovery, as well as develop some basic communication skills to help communicate effectively with individuals and loved ones struggling with substance (alcohol and drugs) use disorders.

Among many humorous and touching anecdotes, Mills reveals how he became an integral part of the Bond family as a young camera operator on 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service, how he bore the brunt of his old friend Roger Moore's legendary on-set bantering, and how he rose to become the director of photography during Timothy Dalton's tenure as 007. Mills also looks back on a career that took in Return of the Jedi on film and The Saint on television with wit and affection, and Shooting 007 contains many of his and Eon Productions' unpublished behind-the-scenes photographs compiled over a lifetime of filmmaking. Featuring many of the film industry's biggest names, this book will be a must-have for both the James Bond and British film history aficionado.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider the usual view of film noir: endless rainy nights populated by down-at-the-heel boxers, writers, and private eyes stumbling toward inescapable doom while stalked by crooked cops and cheating wives in a neon-lit urban jungle. But a new generation of writers is pushing aside the fog of cigarette smoke surrounding classic noir scholarship. In Kiss the Blood Off My Hands: On Classic Film Noir, Robert Miklitsch curates a bold collection of essays that reassesses the genre's iconic style, history, and themes. Contributors analyze the oft-overlooked female detective and little-examined aspects of filmmaking like love songs and radio aesthetics, discuss the significance of the producer and women's pulp fiction, as well as investigate Disney noir and the Fifties heist film, B-movie back projection and blacklisted British directors. At the same time the writers' collective reconsideration unwinds the impact of hot-button topics like race and gender, history and sexuality, technology and transnationality. As bracing as a stiff drink, Kiss the Blood Off My Hands writes the future of noir scholarship in lipstick and chalk lines for film fans and scholars alike.

Book excerpt: How did ‘Vedic man’ think about the destiny of man after death and related ethical issues? That heaven was the abode of the gods was undisputed, but was it also accessible to man in his pursuit of immortality? Was there a realm of the deceased or a hell? What terms were used to indicate these ‘yonder worlds’? What is their location in the cosmos and which cosmographic classifications are at the root of these concepts? The articles by Henk Bodewitz collected in this volume, published over a period of 45 years, between 1969 and 2013, deal with these issues on the basis of a systematic philological study of early Vedic texts, from the Ṛgveda to various Brāhmaṇas, Āraṇykas and Upaniṣads.
