Book excerpt: The Good Spy Wife is a story of aging FBI agent, Gunter Martini, as told by his wife, Bootsie. The saga begins with her suspicions that the next-door neighbor, Alexander, is a Russian agent. The reader is drawn into the drama as the story explodes along with the cigarette boat when Gunter dares to venture out for a boat ride to Bomb Island on the 50,000 acres Lake Murray on the night of a impending hurricane. His drowning is dubious, as no body floats to the surface. The wife trusts in God and believes that he is alive. When he reappears later in the Soviet Union he invites his wife to join him as he works toward an assignment involving the elimination of the American president, as the Soviet country believes the President of the United States and his democratic ideals stand in the way of progress for the Soviet Union. He must die, as the current leadership in America is an affront for growth of the new Russia. Set during the Cold War in the late 1980s, Bootsie and Gunter struggle with separation during difficult times in their own marriage. Bootsie grows spiritually through the unexplained meeting of strangers who appear to her as angels, and through drawing on her own strengths when alone. Ultimately, after many twists and turns of the story, the couple realizes that God is the only help for the frailty of their lives, and each makes plans to rebuild his or her life around their new beliefs. However, will this turn out to be the happy conclusion? One can only discover this knowledge through reading the book.

Waiting for the Rapture, when Jesus will return, may suit her grandparents and many others of the same faith, but Halley wants more. She yearns for some control of her own life. She longs for an education, which she firmly believes would eventually allow choices. Little does she suspect that such dreams might actually come true.

Obidella Johnson hated the word colored. She had to admit that it was better than being called Nigra. Her family had it better than most folks. Her mama was a pastry chef at La Fountain Bleu and made good money, which would have been fine if their daddy, a preacher, hadnt run away with the head of the usher board and their mother hadnt turned to drink to ease her pain. Obidella was thankful that her mama didnt drink during the day. She waited until she got off from work before touching a drop. It fell on Obidella to care for her little brother and sister and keep the house clean. She was also thankful that her mamas boss, Mr. Dave Mills, the richest white man in North Carolina, was in love with her mama and looked the other way. Obidella prayed every day that God would send her daddy back home to take care of them. But God said no. He had other plans for the Johnson familyparticularly Obidella.

The Homecoming of Samuel Lake puts one in mind of Erskine Caldwell and Flannery O’Connor.”—Fannie Flagg Every first Sunday in June, members of the Moses clan gather for an annual reunion at a sprawling hundred-acre farm in Arkansas. And every year, Samuel Lake, a vibrant and committed young preacher, brings his beloved wife, Willadee Moses, and their three children back for the festivities. In the midst of it all, Samuel and Willadee’s outspoken eleven-year-old daughter, Swan, is a bright light. Her high spirits and fearlessness have alternately seduced and bedeviled three generations of the family. But just as the reunion is getting under way, tragedy strikes, jolting the family to their core and setting the stage for a summer of crisis and profound change. With the clear-eyed wisdom that illuminates the most tragic—and triumphant—aspects of human nature, Jenny Wingfield has created an enduring work of fiction. “Jenny Wingfield has given us a spectacular novel [that] will make you laugh out loud one minute, hold your breath the next, and weep when you least expect it.”—Dorothea Benton Frank, author of Folly Beach “[This novel] touches on many genres—family life, Christian fiction, coming-of-age, and suspense. . . . Readers will love it.”—Library Journal (starred review) “Wingfield hooks the reader with her opening sentence. . . . The reader is thoroughly caught up in the family saga.”—Abilene Reporter-News “A lovely debut . . . a bittersweet, inspirational tale.”—The Dallas Morning News Look for special features inside. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he created the character Dave Robicheaux, author James Lee Burke lent the New Orleans homicide detective a few of his own characteristics: a daughter named Alafair, a lifetime struggle with alcohol, his Roman Catholic faith, and his love for fishing and the outdoors. On the other hand, Robicheaux is portrayed as a veteran of the Vietnam war, something Burke never experienced firsthand. Yet the demons Burke has known allow him to write convincingly about demons he never knew. Thus Burke has created a realistic, complex and compelling protagonist for his crime fiction series. That depth is one element that elevates Burke's writing above the status of genre fiction. This book explores how James Lee Burke, through the first person narrative of detective Dave Robicheaux, probes the world of law and order, crime and disorder, and one man's internal conflicts with modern moral issues. The first chapter reveals the similarities and differences between real life creator and fictional protagonist. Next, chapters arranged by theme explore the roles of women, Robicheaux's paternal side as revealed through his adopted daughter, the paternal influences in the detective's own life, and the contrasting personality of his half-brother, Jimmie. The next chapters probe the roots of the detective's moral dilemmas: his battle with alcohol, the Vietnam war's lingering trauma, and religion. Next the author explores Burke's use of the supernatural, sense of place, and music to deepen his stories. Final chapters delve into Robicheaux's moral quandaries as a law enforcement officer, the character's contrast to his reckless and funny partner, Clete, and how Burke reveals truths about life through Robicheaux. An interview with Burke is included.

Sometime it is learn as she goes, with a treacherously steep learning curve. Her paying job is as veterinarian and Medical Director for Iowa Humane Alliance, spaying and neutering anywhere from 30 to 55 cats, dogs, rabbits, rats, pot-bellied pigs, and guinea pigs a day. You’d think this is not possible without a high complication rate, but you’d be wrong. The clinic is just that good. Specialized training and a single-mindedness of the staff makes it so. Dr. Doll hopes to spay and neuter every pet until there are no more unwanted in the state of Iowa, thus putting her out of business. After 26 years in practice, the last 19 in Iowa, Dr. Doll has met and wrangled her share of Feral Cats, Black Bears, Cougars, Giant Pythons, and Crocodilians. And that is the short list. Despite injuries to her body and pride, she is not quite sure she is ready to stop.
