Book excerpt: Objectives: to evaluate the pattern of sleep habits of university students and the degree of satisfaction with their sleep. Background: College students generally develop inadequate sleep habits and often deprive them of sleep during the week. Sleep deprivation and / or fragmentation causes the student to experience a number of undesired consequences arising from excessive daytime sleepiness. This situation causes loss of attention, concentration and operational memory. In addition, poor sleep quality contributes to fatigue, irritability, stress, cognitive deficits and academic performance decline. Material and methods: A total of 134 students answered a questionnaire about the duration of their sleep, habits of sleep hygiene, degree of satisfaction with their sleep and presence of nap. Results: The mean age of the 134 students was 20 years, 44 were males, the average of sleep duration on weekdays was 6.2 hours and on the weekends was 8.5 hours and 61 students said that they nap regularly. The majority claimed to be dissatisfied with the length of their sleep on weekdays and more satisfied with the length of sleep on weekends. Conclusions: Although an adult individual needs an average of seven to eight hours of sleep per night, college students are often deprived of nighttime sleep on weekdays trying to compensate for daytime napping.

Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted at a small university to investigate the effects of sleep patterns on academic achievement of undergraduate students. Undergraduate students were given a self-reporting questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to help track their sleep habits during the academic semester. The sleep habits that were tracked include subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, sleep medication, and daytime dysfunction. The participants were asked to return the self-reporting instruments, which were used to determine their eligibility for a second round of self-reporting. The students were asked to submit a second self-reporting questionnaire designed to target if their sleep patterns had played a role in their midterm grade point average. Participants were asked to turn in a copy of their spring 2016 midterm academic information. The sleep patterns and academic achievement of each participant were used for analysis. In conclusion, there was a slight decrease in grade point average for students who were reported to have a worse sleep quality according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. [from abstract]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sleep as an occupation is frequently under-valued by college students. The purpose of this study was to measure the quality of sleep in undergraduate college students and explore the relationship between academic self-efficacy and performance in student-related occupations. A quantitative, exploratory, descriptive and correlational research design was used to explore the relationship among sleep quality, perceived self-efficacy, and selected characteristics in undergraduate college students (18-25 y/o). Participants included some first generation students, students with disabilities, and student athletes. To collect data, the researchers conducted an online survey, utilizing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and original demographic and self-efficacy questionnaires. The PSQI was used to evaluate the sleep quality, while the demographic and self-efficacy questionnaires gathered information about student demographics, student related occupations and perceived self-efficacy. Two hundred and nine college students, aged 17 to 25, participated in the survey. One hundred thirty five (64.6%) participants reported poor sleep quality, while 74 (35.4%) participants reported good sleep quality as measured by the PSQI. The average number of hours slept reported by participants was 6.68, with a range of one to 11 hours. Despite limited correlations from the study further research may serve as an effective tool in identifying strategies to improve the quality and quantity of sleep in college students. Occupational therapists can help college students establish effective sleep routines as part of their practice. More effective sleep routines may in turn lead to more effective engagement in other occupations.

The 2nd edition also features: Greater emphasis on translating research into practice and policy. Two new sections on risk and protective factors for disease and another on social and structural influences that affect health such as socioeconomic status, reflect the current scholarship in the field. More on prevention and/or interventions and treatment in the applications section. The book opens with the fields central theories including a "newer" stress theory that emphasizes the interaction of biological and social systems. Part 2 reviews the mechanisms that help us explain the link between health and behavior across diseases and populations. The all new Part 3 focuses on variables that lead to the onset and progression of major diseases or that are instrumental in promoting health.

Book excerpt: This volume connects current ideas and concepts about sleep functions and circadian rhythms with the search for novel target-selective sleep-wake therapeutics. To do so, it provides a timely, state-of-the-art overview of sleep-wake mechanisms in health and disease, ongoing developments in drug discovery, and their prospects for the clinical treatment of sleep-disordered patients. It particularly focuses on the concept that sleep and wakefulness mutually affect each other, and the future therapeutic interventions with either sleep- or wake-promoting agents that are expected to not only improve the quality of sleep but also the waking behavior, cognition, mood and other sleep-associated physiological functions. Book excerpt: There are at least four reasons why a sleep clinician should be familiar with rating scales that evaluate different facets of sleep. First, the use of scales facilitates a quick and accurate assessment of a complex clinical problem. In three or four minutes (the time to review ten standard scales), a clinician can come to a broad understanding of the patient in question. For example, a selection of scales might indicate that an individual is sleepy but not fatigued; lacking alertness with no insomnia; presenting with no symptoms of narcolepsy or restless legs but showing clear features of apnea; exhibiting depression and a history of significant alcohol problems. This information can be used to direct the consultation to those issues perceived as most relevant, and can even provide a springboard for explaining the benefits of certain treatment approaches or the potential corollaries of allowing the status quo to continue. Second, rating scales can provide a clinician with an enhanced vocabulary or language, improving his or her understanding of each patient. In the case of the sleep specialist, a scale can help him to distinguish fatigue from sleepiness in a patient, or elucidate the differences between sleepiness and alertness (which is not merely the inverse of the former). Sleep scales are developed by researchers and clinicians who have spent years in their field, carefully honing their preferred methods for assessing certain brain states or characteristic features of a condition. Thus, scales provide clinicians with a repertoire of questions, allowing them to draw upon the extensive experience of their colleagues when attempting to tease apart nuanced problems. Third, some scales are helpful for tracking a patient’s progress. A particular patient may not remember how alert he felt on a series of different stimulant medications. Scale assessments administered periodically over the course of treatment provide an objective record of the intervention, allowing the clinician to examine and possibly reassess her approach to the patient. Finally, for individuals conducting a double-blind crossover trial or a straightforward clinical practice audit, those who are interested in research will find that their own clinics become a source of great discovery. Scales provide standardized measures that allow colleagues across cities and countries to coordinate their practices. They enable the replication of previous studies and facilitate the organization and dissemination of new research in a way that is accessible and rapid. As the emphasis placed on evidence-based care grows, a clinician’s ability to assess his or her own practice and its relation to the wider medical community becomes invaluable. Scales make this kind of standardization possible, just as they enable the research efforts that help to formulate those standards. The majority of Rating Scales in Sleep and Sleep Disorders:100 Scales for Clinical Practice is devoted to briefly discussing individual scales. When possible, an example of the scale is provided so that readers may gain a sense of the instrument’s content. Groundbreaking and the first of its kind to conceptualize and organize the essential scales used in sleep medicine, Rating Scales in Sleep and Sleep Disorders:100 Scales for Clinical Practice is an invaluable resource for all clinicians and researchers interested in sleep disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College students are highly vulnerable to sleep disturbances. The current study, conducted within a sample of undergraduate students attending a private university in an urban, northeastern city, was designed to establish the nature and prevalence of sleep disruption among college students and examine the impact of deficient sleep on daytime functioning. The study further sought to evaluate the impact of sleep education on students' sleep habits, beliefs, and patterns by evaluating the feasibility of implementing an online sleep education program within this unique population. As predicted, it was found that students with poor subjective sleep quality reported decreased daytime functioning; and this relationship was, indeed, mediated by excessive daytime sleepiness. It was also predicted that students with shorter nighttime sleep duration would demonstrate decreased alertness on a psychomotor vigilance task the following morning; however, this relationship was not established. Failure to demonstrate this relationship was, perhaps, due to a lack of experimental control over PVT timing and decreased participation in the daily measures that comprise this relationship. As such, it was found that, contrary to study predictions, the implementation of an online sleep education program involving the daily collection of subjective sleep data is not feasible for implementation within this population. It was, however, determined that removal of the daily data collection resulted in satisfactory completion of the sleep protocol. It was further found that both sleep education and control participants significantly improved sleep knowledge, sleep quality and daytime functioning from baseline (Time 1) to immediate follow-up (Time 2). However, improvements in the intervention group did not significantly exceed those found in the control group.
