Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery Illustrated in Its Effects Upon Woman and Domestic Society Deeply has the conviction been rooted, during the last twenty-five years, that the condition of American colored women, and the collateral topics included in the seventh commandment, are the most important theme in the Whole controversy upon slavery because it combines the ecclesias tical questions with all the grand moral points. Yet this vol ume probably would not at present have been promulged, had not the moral and religious warfare assumed a hideous char acter, not less fearful than it is astounding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Slavery Is it not plain that there is a providence in all this? We have a duty to perform, we are loaded with responsibility for our enslaved brethren, as well as for our kindred who hold slaves, and so Heaven has righteously decreed that we shall think and act upon it. Truly, we ought not to avoid the subject. It is unworthy of Americans to shrink from inquiry as to our condition, our prospects, and our duty. Let us meet the subject like men. Truth will not harm us certainly not if we obey it. Shame on the man who thinks or admits that the free institutions in which we glory, cannot stand the test of truth and free inquiry. What is a slave? A slave is a person held in slavery. We are never to forget that the slaves are human beings. Their black complexion and degraded condition often incline us to overlook this fact. We talk about the African race, but the slaves are of the human race. If all other proofs were set aside, the unmistakable evidence that they partake in the consequences of Adams fall, would settle the question. God selected their ancestors as one of the four men who were preserved in Noah's Ark, to repeople the desolated earth, after the deluge, and Jesus Christ came to seek them among the lost sheep for whose salvation he laid down his life. They are our brethren by descent from the same parent, by being found in the same general depravity, and by sharing in the mercy of the same Savior. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery and Colour Are conscious of the evils of slavery, and would gladly listen to any reasonable plan for relieving themselves of their coloured dependents. Least of all do such notions meet with approval in the North. But it is not less certain that, from causes not far to seek, a new tone of sentiment has begun to prevail among the general slaveholding interest. What was long lamented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery The first question to be proposed by a rational being is, not what is profitable, but what is Right. Duty must be primary, prominent, most conspicuous, among the objects of human thought and pursuit. If we cast it down from its supremacy, if we inquire first for our interests, and then for our duties, we shall certainly err. We can never see the Right clearly and fully, but by making it our first concern. No judgment can be just or wise, but that which is built on the conviction of the paramount worth and importance of Duty. This is the fundamental truth, the supreme law of reason; and the mind, which does not start from this in its inquiries into human affairs, is doomed to great, perhaps fatal error. The Right is the supreme good, and includes all other goods. In seeking and adhering to it, we secure our true and only happiness. All prosperity, not founded on it, is built on sand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picture of Slavery in the United States of America Where is the charter found to sanctify Despotic, base, unqualified control, O'er strength and will, by man enthroned o'er man? In Revelation's code you find it not, Nor in Creation's multifarious laws. The will of Heaven, when unrevealed by Christ, Or by the sacred organs of his word, Is sought and found in the primeval light, Which Nature sheds through her expanded spheres. But when with Gospel-day this light combines, The fool who doubts, who asks for clearer proof Must hood-wink'd be indeed, and darkness love. That such resistless evidence obtains, To evince Demoniac Slavery's turpitude, With all the powers of brightest Truth appears, To the impartial mind that views each source, Whence the full streams of testimony flow. Each text of Sacred Writ enjoining love, Affection, justice, mercy, meekness, peace, And piety, establishes this truth, That Slavery contravenes the law of God! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in America: July, 1836 This emphatic recognition of the divine agency as necessary to the prosperous issue Of their cause, forcibly appeals to the pious and prayerful sympathies Of British Christians; and it is earnestly hoped, that not a few Of them will unite with their transatlantic brethren on the last Monday in each month, to implore the divine blessing on their work of faith and labour of love. At the conclusion of its labours the following Declaration of Sentiments was unanimously adopted, and under feelings of the deepest responsibility signed by the members of the convention. A more important and eloquent exposition Of Anti-slavery principles was perhaps never written. NO hesitation is, therefore, felt in recording the whole Of it in these pages. It is worthy Of being inscribed in letters Of gold. The Convention assembled in the city of Philadelphia, to organize a National Anti. Slavery Society, promptly seize the Opportunity to promulgate the following Declaration Of Sentiments, as cherished by them in relation to the enslavement Of one-sixth portion Of the American people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the Domestic Slave-Trade in the United States: In a Series of Letters Addressed to the Executive Committee of the American Union for the Relief and Improvement of the Colored Race The American Union for the Relief and Im provement of the Colored Race, was formed in Boston, in January, 1835. An exposition of the principles and plans of the Union was soon after published by the Executive Committee. One of the principal objects of the Society, as stated in that paper, is to collect and publish information of an authentic character respect ing Slavery. It is conceived that there is yet no inconsiderable dearth of well-prepared and trust-worthy facts respecting this great national evil. It is obvious that it cannot be peacefully removed, except as it is seen in its true light. It is in prosecution of this great branch of their labors, that the Committee present thefollowing Report concerning Slavery and the domestic slave-trade as it exists in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Coming, as it does, from a gentleman who is well acquainted with the whole subject of Slavery, from an actual residence of a number of years in a slave-holding state, it will be read with much interest and profit. It gives, in the opinion of the Committee, an accurate account of Slavery, and of the public sentiment respect ing it in the district of country visited. As such, it is respectfully commended to the atten tion of all the friends of the African race. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days Those slaves that were not married served the food from the great house, and about half-past eleven they would send the older children with food to the workers in the fields. Of course, I followed, and before we got to the fields, we had eaten the food nearly all up. When the workers returned home they complained, and we were whipped. The slaves got their allowance every Monday night of molasses, meat, corn meal, and a kind of flour called dredgings or shorts. Perhaps this allowance would be gone before the next Mon day night, in which case the slaves would steal hogs and chickens. Then would come the whipping-post. Master himself never whipped his slaves; this was left to the overseer. We children had no supper, and only a little piece of. Bread or something of the kind in the morning. Our dishes consisted of one wooden bowl, and oyster shells were our spoons. This bowl served for about fifteen children, and often the dogs and the ducks and the peafowl had a dip in it. Sometimes we had buttermilk and bread in our bowl, sometimes greens or bones. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the War The reconstruction Of the Union on the basis of slavery is the real aim of the chiefs of the Southern Rebellion, which reconstruction would give them a government similar in its essential features to that of an cient pagan Rome, and a government, if the States held. Together, prepared for future conquest. Ethe Union reconstructed, it could pro ceed to the conquest of Mexico and Central America, and reduce their negro and colored populations to slavery, which would be counted their Americanization. This done, it could proceed, beginning with Cuba, to the annexation, one after another, of the West India Islands. It then could extend its power Over the whole continent of South America, and threaten an advance upon Eastern Asia, and the annexation of all the cotton-producing countries and tropical regions Of the globe, and through the monopoly of cotton, rice, and tropical productions in general, to Obtain the control of the commerce and credit of all nations. Such, to a greater or less extent, is the dream which Southern statesmen have indulged, and which they have taken the first step toward realizing. In its full extent no sane man supposes the dream practicable; but its practicability, up to a certain point, has been demonstrated by the suc cess which has hitherto attended the Rebellion, for, up to the present, successful it undeniably has been. The Confederates have brought into the field a more effective, if not a larger force, than the Federal govern ment has thus far brought against them and, from the Potomac to the Mississippi, they hold the strategic lines, and can be met by the Federal forces only at great disadvantage. As yet not one of those lines has been wrested from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
