Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three independent physical activity curricula on physical activity level. Additionally, this study examined the differing training effects resulting from participation in the three different curricula. Physical activity programs in schools can be divided into two basic groups, health-related programs and skill-related programs. This study consisted of a skill-related group, health-related group and a control group. Height, weight, body composition, throwing test for accuracy, one-half mile run test for time and physical activity questionnaire were administered pre-and posttreatment. Participants consisted of three third grade classes at St. Gabriel Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Twenty-seven males and thirty-one females participated twice a week for eight weeks. Physical activity level was not affected by participation in any of the three groups. The skill group was the only group to significantly increase in the throw test (0.79 ± 1.09SE, p = .05). The control group was the only group to increase in the one-half mile run for time (0.53 ± 0.69, p = .007) and percent body fat (4.16 ± 6.62%, p = 0.04). These results show children do increase throwing skills after participation in throwing activities and instruction. Conversely, the health group showed no change in the health-related variable, but also showed no change in percent body fat.
