Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Civil War, North Alabama was infamous for lawlessness. The era saw courts filled with defendants who spanned the socioeconomic gamut--farmers, merchants and politicians. In 1811, John B. Haynes tore apart William Badger's house with his bare hands. Rodah Barnett ran a series of ill-reputed brothels in the early 1820s. In 1818, Rebecca Layman "accidentally" gave her husband sulfuric acid instead of rum. There is even a case of assault with frozen corn. Author John O'Brien relays these and more stories of the shady side of North Alabama during the antebellum period.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's Valley: People and Power Along the Tennessee River Said the preacher at Jordan's Bend: In the first place God made the earth, including the Tennessee Valley, and man upon it. Then He sat back to see what would happen next. One day He saw a man digging at the ground with a stick to make the corn grow better. "Now, that fellows got sense," said the Lord. "I'll give him a little help." So God told the man to try digging with a sharp rock. Next thing God knew, the man began to put an edge on all the flints he could find and do all kinds of work with them. He even started a church where they said God was a rock. God didn't care much for that but He let it pass. Then one man with a sharp rock hit another man over the ear and killed him. God didn't like that a bit. He let the river rise and drown all those men in a flood, and He started again. This time the men went to farming along their river, and God told them how to dig ditches to water their crops. But it wasn't long before they started to worship the river, and before they were making slaves out of other men to do the digging. Some of these slaves were the people God liked best, so He let the river rise again. The next time God wasn't having any foolishness about slavery, so He showed the men how to harness a mule and make a wagon wheel. Pretty soon the mules and the oxen were doing all the hard work. This book was released on 1999 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 6,000 entries, A Bibliography of Tennessee History will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone--students, historians, librarians, genealogists--engaged in researching Tennessee's rich and colorful past. A sequel to Sam B. Smith's invaluable 1973 work, Tennessee History: A Bibliography, this book follows a similar format and includes published books and essays, as well as many unpublished theses and dissertations, that have become available during the intervening years. The volume begins with sections on Reference, Natural History, and Native Americans. Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Sections on Literature and County Histories round out the book. Included is a helpful subject index that points the reader to particular persons, places, incidents, or topics. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. The history of entertainment in Tennessee is also well represented in this volume, including, for example, hundreds of citations for writings about Elvis Presley and for works that treat Nashville and Memphis as major show business centers. The Literature section, meanwhile, includes citations for fiction and poetry relating to Tennessee history as well as for critical works about Tennessee writers. Throughout, the editors have strived to achieve a balance between comprehensive coverage and the need to be selective. The result is a volume that will benefit researchers for years to come. The Editors: W. Calvin Dickinson is professor of history at Tennessee Technological University. Eloise R. Hitchcock is head reference librarian at the University of the South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antebellum Era was a complex time in American culture. Young ladies had suitors call upon them, while men often settled quarrels by dueling, and mill girls worked 16-hour days to help their families make ends meet. Yet at the same time, a new America was emerging. The rapid growth of cities inspired Frederick Law Olmstead to lead the movement for public parks. Stephen Foster helped forge a catalog of American popular music; writers such as Washington Irving and Ralph Waldo Emerson raised the level of American literature; artists such as Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty defined a new style of painting called the Hudson River School. All the while, schisms between northern and southern culture threatened to divide the nation. This volume in Greenwood's American Popular Culture Through History recounts the ways in which things old and new intersected in the decades before the Civil War. James and Dorothy Volo are one of the more prolific author teams in reference publishing today, and with this volume they make important contributions to Greenwood's successful series on America's other history.
