Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Society, Vol. 1 of 2: In Great Britain and Ireland Tm; following volumes were promised to the public, early after my return from England to the United States, some months ago. It was my intention, before putting the work to press, to remodel the letters contained in it, and to embrace in them, sentiments and impressions on many points coming under the title I have chosen, as well as on the state of politics, morals, and religion in the United Kingdom, which had been purposely omitted, in my correspondence with America, till the observations of the entire tour should give me full confidence in their truth and correctness. It is not intended for the learned; they are above it: nor for the vulgar; they are below it. It is intended for men, who, equally removed from the corruption of opulence, and from the depression of bodily labour, are bent on useful knowledge; who, even in the delirium of youth, feel the dawn of patriotism, and who in riper years enjoy its meridian warmth. To such men this work is dedicated; and that they may profit by it, is the author's ardent wish, and probably will be while any spirit remains in him to form a wish"--Preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from White, Red, Black, Vol. 1 of 2: Sketches of American Society in the United States During the Visit of Their Guests Many books on America have been published in England - earnest and satirical accounts, serious and flippant narratives, caricatures and sketches, birds-eye views and finished pictures. Miss Martineau, Silk Buckingham, George Combe, Alexander Mackay, Sir Charles Lyell, have treated in their valuable works the most different phases of American life. Why, then, another book on a subject so often, and in some quarters so ably treated? The question is easily answered. America is growing rapidly, and changes its aspect unceasingly; a short time gives to the States a different appearance, and a picture, true to-day, no longer bears resemblance after a couple of years. And then the Americans are so closely related to the English, as they speak the same language, and live under the same common law, that some of the tourists have been induced to direct their attention, less to the working of the different institutions, than to insignificant discrepancies on the surface of society. A foreigner, strange to both countries, without previous predilection for, or prejudice against either of them, can perhaps be more impartial in his view of the United States, than the son of the mother country, attached to her in manners and customs. These reasons have induced me to "carry an owl to Athens" by publishing these volumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the same period in which Derek Walcott was pouring immense physical, emotional, and logistical resources into the foundation of a viable first-rate West Indian theatre company and continuing to write his inimitable poetry, he was also busy writing newspaper reviews, chiefly for the Trinidad Guardian. His prodigious reviewing activity extended far beyond those areas with which one might most readily associate his interests and convic¬tions. As Gordon Rohlehr once prescient¬ly observed, “If one wants to see a quoti¬dian workaday Walcott, one should go back to [his] well over five hundred arti¬cles, essays and reviews on painting, cinema, calypso, carnival, drama and lite¬rature,” articles which “reveal a rich, vari¬ous, witty and scrupulous intelligence in which generous humour counterpoints acerbity.” These articles capture the vital¬ity of Caribbean culture and shed addi-tional light on the aesthetic preoccupa¬tions expressed in Walcott’s essays pub¬lished in journals. The editors have exam¬ined the corpus of Walcott’s journalistic activity from its beginnings in 1950 to its peak in the early 1970s, and have made a generous selection of material from the Guardian, along with occasional pieces from such sources as Public Opinion (Kingston) and The Voice of St. Lucia (Castries). The articles in Volume 1 are organized as follows: Caribbean society, culture, and the arts generally; literature and society; periodicals; anglophone poe¬try, prose fiction, and non-fiction; African and other literatures; and the visual arts (Caribbean and beyond). The volume closes with a selection of Walcott’s mis¬cellaneous satirical essays. The volume editor Gordon Collier has written a search¬ing introductory essay on a central theme – here, a critical, comparative analysis of Walcott’s development as journalist against the historical background of press activity in the Caribbean, coupled with an illustrative discussion (drawing on Wal¬cott’s newspaper articles) of his attitudes towards prose fiction and poetry.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we profitably compare art and philosophy? In the first part of this collection of twenty-one writings, many previously unpublished, Schapiro uses specific works of art to elucidate the rich variety of ways in which artists and art movements have been compared with philosophical systems. His highly lucid arguments, graceful prose, and extraordinary erudition offer new opportunities to broaden and enrich our understanding of even the most familiar works of art. In the second part of the collection, Schapiro explores aspects of our everyday experiences with art: the value of modern art, social realism, revolutionary art, art as a cause of violence, the art market, the public support of artists, public art commissions, church art, and others. Here, in essays that range in a period of more than forty years, we witness Schapiro's unfailing dedication both to the liberty of the artist and to the integration of the arts in society. Throughout all of his writings, Schapiro provides us with a means of ordering our past that is reasoned and passionate, methodical and inventive. In so doing, he revitalizes our faith in the unsurpassed importance of critical thinking and creative independence.

Book excerpt: Devoted explicitly to the examination of Ottoman/Turkish-inspired architecture in Western Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in this study Nebahat Avcioglu rethinks the question of cultural frontiers not as separations but as a rapport of heterogeneities. Reclaiming turquerie as cross-cultural art from the confines of the inconsequential exoticism it is often reduced to, Avcioglu analyses hitherto neglected constructions, and links them to notions of self-representation and politics.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1975, is an examination of the theoretical foundation of the sociology of art and literature and an in-depth study in the sociology of knowledge. In discussing and clarifying some of the important philosophical issues in this field, the constant underlying reference is to the creative and artistic-expressive areas of knowledge – so that the better understanding of the social nature and genesis of all knowledge may point the way towards a similar comprehension of art and society.
