Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Society and Travel Breakfast is such a charmingly social meal, ' we heard a lady once say in speaking of a large breakfast in a country-house, every one comes down so fresh, everybody is in time, and ready for the duties and pleasures of the day. I con sider it a delightful moment.' It was a sentimental and poetical view, but as far as possible removed from the truth; for in our estimation it is a peculiarly unhappy moment, and one in which many persons are prone to regard their fellow-creatures as their natural enemies. It was my intention, before putting the work to press, to remodel the letters contained in it, and to embrace in them, sentiments and impressions on many points coming under the title I have chosen, as well as on the state of politics, morals, and religion in the United Kingdom, which had been purposely omitted, in my correspondence with America, till the observations of the entire tour should give me full confidence in their truth and correctness. Cried the voice of a nightingale, and a little an el's head had scarce peeped through the when her entire self danced into the room, making a ludicrous courtesy, bowing obsequious y, and exclaiming: No; this is not to be endured Pa raves - runs past me into the street, as if 'change were on fire. Ma yawns - will hear nothing of shopping and growls continually, cash! Cash! Cash Oh! My dear sissy! Our shopping excur sion will be ruined to-day. Sissy, to whom this tirade was address ed, sat resting her left hand upon the sofa, and holding Paul Clifford in her right. She cast a languid, sorrowful look upon her lovely sister. Alas poor Stanton will be distressed enough, she continued. Look, he is just making his tenth promenade toward the Battery. Yesterday he was a most sorrow ful object. I could not have had the heart to refuse him. How could you be so cru el, dear Margaret? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Sea to Sea, Vol. 2: And Other Sketches, Letter of Travel Get that girl to give back your gig-lamps, and you will be able to see more clearly into the soul of the Far East. The Far East hasn't got a soul. She swapped it for a Constitution on the Eleventh of February last. Can any Constitution make up for the wear ing of Europe clothes? I saw a Jap lady just now in full afternoon calling-kit. She looked atrocious. Have you seen the later Japanese art - the pictures on the fans and in the shop win dows? They are faithful reproductions of the changed life - telegraph poles down the streets, conventionalised tram-lines, top-hats, and carpet bags in the hands of the men. The artists can make those things almost passable, but when it comes to conventionalising a Europe dress, the effect is horrible. Japan wishes to take her place among civilised nations, said the Professor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My First Visit to Europe: Or Sketches of Society, Scenery, and Antiquities, in England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and France To those who deem it necessary for a writer to appear before the public with a laboured Apology in one hand and his book in the other, the author of these sketches has nothing to say. Unconscious of aught but a desire to please, he is not aware that such an effort, however humble it may be, requires more than a word of explanation - a knock at the door of his friends, not a herald of formal and mistrustful approach. Those who object that enough has been written, do not consider, that Europe is like a vast mine; the more it is explored, the more inviting it becomes. Gems of beauty, ruins, or scenery, present an ever-varying phase to the eye of travellers, because never viewed from' the same point of light. Thus minds, like mirrors of different shape, reflect a hundred images of one object. Who does not love to look often at pictures of friends and favourite scenes? That the field from which these unpretending sheaves are brought has been often gleaned, who knows not? Yet it is the fertile field that feels the frequent sickle. Freshness, not variety, gives value to the grain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
