Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Enterprise: A Collection of Discourses on Christian Missions The preparation of this volume was undertaken at the suggestion of others, whose opinions, ever entitled to respect, seemed to present a demand for service, which the Editor did not consider himself as at liberty to disregard. This claim he was the more happy to honor, as it afforded an opportunity, through the medium of secular enterprise, to promote an interest which he has long regarded as of primary and paramount importance. Whatever may be the measure of profit from the pecuniary investment, the hope is fondly cherished, both by the Publishers and the Editor, that large benefits, of a much higher order, will accrue to that noble Cause which it is especially intended to advance. The task of selection has been, in some instances, peculiarly difficult. Several discourses, of great excellence, have been omitted, which, perhaps, would have been included, had not circumstances appeared to encourage the expectation, that a second series might be demanded. Should this volume be favorably received, another may succeed, comprising not only sermons, but a rich variety of addresses, essays, and eloquent appeals, all pertaining to the same great subject - Christian Missions. Many of this class of productions are too valuable to be left scattered in ephemeral forms, and should be gathered up, and added to the increasing stock of our Missionary literature, and thus made to extend and perpetuate their salutary efficiency. Corrections and additions have been made, by some of the authors, with special reference to this publication. Marginal notes and references, not necessary to be retained, have been omitted; and, in a few instances, the text has been slightly abridged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions and the Social Ideal: A Sermon Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, at the Seventy-First Annual Meeting, Held in Lowell, Mass., Oct. 5, 1880 The sea offered only images of terror to the mind of those to whom St. John wrote. It bounded the known world. They peopled with direful fancies the regions which lay beyond its distant rim. Meaning by the word sea the Mediterranean, with which they were chiefly conversant, it would suggest to them ideas of distance and separation long and perilous voyages, which would not bring them to friends, but to savage and hostile tribes. No doubt all these ideas were in the mind of the rapt seer when he used his beautiful image. He is carried forward by the Spirit of God into the time when Christ shall be the universal King. It is the glory and blessedness of that day which his vivid figure paints. He means to say that a time is coming, in the history of our world, when the dominion of man over nature shall be complete, the sea even not blocking the pathways of his love; when he shall regard no place as the abode of mys tery or danger; and when that separation, difficulty of access, and hostility which now divide the nations from one another, and of which the sea is a striking symbol, shall give place to an easy, brotherly, and uniformly delightful intercourse among all the inhabitants of our globe. The march of the human family toward this blessed state began in the dawn of history, and is still going forward. Let me speak to you a little of the means by which the great renovation Is to come about first, of some of the natural and human means; secondly, of the supernatural, as seen in the gospel, or more especially in the work of Christian missions. The missionary, by creating new ideas, aspirations and tastes in the savage, is opening new fields for traffic, and making demands for our merchandise. Where Mr. Lindley is laboring, in Africa, he has Created such a spirit of agriculture that one man, in one year, for his own neighborhood alone, sent to Boston for the purchase of plows. Steamships and railways, cotton mills and telegraphs follow in the wake of Christian missions. The missionaries have become the guardian angels of seamen in the Pacific. Formerly the natives were pirates and murderers. It was perilous to sail among the islands. N ow that is all changed, wherever a missionary has been laboring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches for Sermons, Chiefly on the Gospels for the Sundays and Holydays of the Year AD the writing of these Sketches, or Suggestions, for Sermons for the H Sundays and Holy Days of the year depended upon the Author's own initiative, or upon his belief that he could fill a want long felt, they would surely never have appeared in print. It was in response to a special request that the task was undertaken; and it may be truly affirmed that neither the desire to oblige nor any prospect of personal advantage resulting from the work would have been a sufficient inducement to accede to the request, had the writer not indulged the hope that he might be able to render a real service to his busy Brother Priests, at least to those just entering the field of their missionary labors and assuming the great responsibility of Preaching the Word. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Always Abounding in the Work of the Lord: A Sermon, Preached at Oswego, New York, September 10, 1850, Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, at Their Forty-First Annual Meeting The larger portions of the unevangelized world make their first acquaintance with Christianity through men as far removed from its spirit, as those who have never heard of Christ. The cupidity and fraud, the licentiousness and violence of many com mercial men and their agents, released from the re straints of Christian association, and tempted by example and opportunity to the indulgence of their ruling passions, are as familiarly known, as they are deserving of abhorrence. The brandy of France, and the rum of New England, the opium of British India, and the cannon of European navies, combined With the intemperance and debauchery, profaneness and falsehood of foreigners thrown into the ports, and resident in the cities of the dark-minded idolater, foster the vicious propensities of his untutored na ture, plunge him deeper in pollution, than if left to the unmixed influences of his own debased religion, and increase his repugnance to a Faith that promises no improvement either to his social or moral con dition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Missionary Memorial: Including Biographical and Historical Sketches Detained lby ill health from the Gaboon Mission, West Africa, to which I was appomted, and unable to engage in the work of the ministry, I have thought that I might perform an acceptable and useful service in the cause of missions by 001 leeting the materials for the volume which is now offered to the public. If I were permitted to indulge in a poet's license, I could adopt the language of another, and say of this work, I have gathered a nosegay of culled flowers, and brought noth ing, of my own but the thread that ties them. But, though humble and laborious, this has been a most delightful work. It has been delightful to go back and trace in detail the his tory of' those plans and movements which have since resulted so gloriously to the cause of Christ. In the earlier efforts in connection with the work of foreign missions in this country, there was an ardent faith, a self-forgetting, self-consuming zeal, that were truly heroic and sublime. It has been refreshing to go back and live over again those eventful scenes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministrant Church: A Sermon Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, at Their Meeting in Salem, Mass., October 3, 1871 I Speak now of impression on the world. Every Christian life, at home or abroad, is in truth such a ministration. Its con secration is entire or nothing. Whosoever forsaketh not all that he hath, cannot be my disciple, is the law as much in Chris tian America as in India or Central Africa. And in general, I believe, such a life involves as much sacrifice and brings as much happiness in one field as In another. It is the great first step which costs, in either. And it is more what we are, than where, that fixes the happiness as well as nobleness of life. These are determined more by loyalty to our professed self-consecration, its entirety and absoluteness, than any or all exterior circumstances whatsoever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches of the Missions: Under the Care of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church Location. The mission supported by the Presbyterian Board, under the care of the Presbytery of Western Africa, lies in the republic of Liberia, whose limits are 7 25' N. lat. down to 4 44' N. lat., including a little over five hundred miles of sea-coast, with an average width in the interior of fifty, miles. This interior extension may be increased, the territory of native princes which has been ceded to the republic not leaving very definite eastern limits. Early History. The first settlement on that coast was January 7, 1821, by eighty-nine free blacks who sailed from New York in 1820. In April, 1822, a colony of manumitted slaves from the United States was planted by the American Colonization Society, which for twenty-five years retained the supervision of them, under Governors Ashmun, Pinney and others, until the establishment of the republic, with its capital at Monrovia, on July 26, 1847. Various missionary boards, representing all the evangelical Christian churches, followed with their agents those who had gone out as colonist. People And Government. The Government is modeled on that of the United States, having a President with his Cabinet, a Senate and a House of Representatives. There is no established church, and all faith are equally tolerated. In 1890 the population comprises about 20,000 civilized negroes, chiefly of American origin, and 1,050,000 half-wild native, who are gradually coming under the influence of civilization. The most interesting tribes are the Veys, Bassos, Kroos and Mandingoes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Principles and Practice: A Discussion of Christian Missions and of Some Criticisms Upon Them The purpose of this volume is (1) to set forth some of the main principles of the mission movement on which it rests in its appeal at home and in its work abroad (2) to apply these principles in some illustrative instances, especially to the conditions in China, with which men are now most familiar, and which many regard as putting the missionary enterprise to its conclusive test, (3) to suggest by a few sketches of mission fields and the results of mission work in life, both the need and power of the work, and (4) to enforce the duty and privilege of the serious attempt speedily to evangelize the world, and thus enable Christianity at once to dis play and to realize its divine mission to all mankind. Some of the chapters of this book have appeared in the Churchman, the Congregationalist, the Sunday School Times, the Homiletic Review, the Missionary Review, and other papers. The concluding chapter appears also in Twentieth Century Addresses, a volume containing the addresses delivered by the appointment of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, in recognition of the advent of the Twentieth Century, before the General Assembly in Philadelphia, on May 14th, 1901.
