Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Army Life in Russia A Year ago, in "The Russian Army and its Campaigns in Turkey in 1877-78," I endeavored to explain to military readers the organization of the Russian army, to narrate the events of the war I had been sent to observe, and to state certain professional conclusions which that war justified. In the following pages I have attempted to give a few sketches, which, crude and imperfect as they are, may yet serve to give some idea of the soul which animates the Russian military machine, and tell what manner of man the Russian soldier is, and how he lives and moves and has his being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldiers of the Tsar: And Other Sketches and Studies of the Russia of to-Day Itwill be noticed that pure politics has been avoided. There are two reasons for this. In the first place, the writer's head is still awhirl with the complexity of the situation in Russia. In the second place, a discussion of politics will not make the reader feel that he has been among Russians, who hate politics. The attitude of the average Russian towards his Government is much like our own. It is all a conundrum on a large scale, and nobody has the answer to it. A certain aged diplomatist, astonished at a recent event, which was greatly in favour of Russia, dropped this remark, I suppose it's all due to Some saint or other, devil take it all I He had never spoken for his fellow-countrymen in a more truly representative manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Day by Day With the Russian Army, 1914-15 For the last ten years or more I have paid long visits to Russia, being interested in anything that might con duce to closer relations between the two countries. During this time the whole course of Russia's public life has brought her far nearer to England - ih particular, the creation of new legislative institutions, the Wonderful economic development of the country, and the first real acquaintance which England has made with Russian culture. I always travelled to Russia through Germany, whose people had an inborn unintelligence and contempt for all things Russian, and whose Government has done what it could to hold England and Russia at arm's length from each other. I often used to wonder which of us Germany would fight first. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fighting Without a War: An Account of Military Intervention in North Russia This book does not assume to tell the whole story of that expedition. I did not see all of it. No man did. In addition to what I saw, how ever, I had the advantage of meeting constantly men who had seen and been in the various other fights and locations. Under the overstimulat ing circumstances of army life the very air seems full of wild rumors. This was particu larly true in the isolations of the Russian fight ing. I have felt the necessity therefore of exer cising great care not to accept as true uncor roborated army rumors. The matters of chief interest in this book, moreover, are matters of my own personal observation and knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldiers of the Tsar: And Other Sketches and Studies of the Russia of to-Day This little book of sketches and studies is the work of a journalist who was in Russia for some months during the early part of the war. He spent most of his time talking to people, and in Russia one need never fear that casual travelling companions will take no interest in one. He had long chats with Russians of all classes, officers of many ranks, soldiers (whose taciturnity was particularly difficult to break through), Jews, Poles, and queer odds-and-ends who find themselves places within the great Empire. He tried to get them to talk about themselves, which was sometimes difficult, and about one another, which was often dangerously easy. The result is a book based entirely upon personal observation and on gossip, and not as most of the volumes published nowadays are, upon other books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Army in the World War IN the autumn of 1914, when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the program of its re searches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing program, which had been prepared as the result Of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to Show the quality Of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be fol lowed Out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed, by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost Of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an Economic and Social History Of the World War, it was felt, if undertaken by men Of judicial temper and ade quate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific obliga tions to truth, furnish data for the forming Of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institution dedicated to the cause of international peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Russian Army Being the Experiences of a National Guardsman I had been so long at an office desk when the war broke over Europe that the idea Of going into it never occurred to me. I had been considered too young for the war of 1898. Parental Objection had stopped my attempting to witness the war between Japan and Russia. I had been compelled to devote myself to business affairs for seven years to the exclusion of all wider interests. It was thus not due to any initia tive of mine, but to the energy of my mother, who planned for me the experiences she had forbidden ten years before, that I received the following invitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Experiences and Impressions in Russia Russia has called to the colors since the war began not less than men. This constitutes the largest army assembled by any one nation in the history of the world. Of this vast number it is estimated that fully have already been killed or have died as the result of wounds or diseases occasioned by the war. Another are today prisoners of war in Germany, austria-hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Another may. Be classified as permanently ineffective, chiefly those who have been seriously mutilated in warfare or shattered by disease. This leaves men as comprising the total strength of the Rus sian army of today. Some authorities whom I consulted give a somewhat lower figure, but more would place it even higher. Of this army of today probably are to be found in the seventy corps on the European front and the five on the Asiatic front; in the depots or reserves; in connection with garrisons and communications-athus leaving a little over in training, on leave or otherwise not immediately avail able for military operations, but potentially a most important asset. On this vast host of Russian men and boys rests the tre mendons responsibility of maintaining and pressing the war on the long drawn out eastern front. The effectiveness and faith fulness with which they perform this critical duty will determine, far more largely than we in America have realized, the extent of the exertions and sacrifices, and the laying down of life and substance, of the American people in connection with the great struggle. Whatever can be done, therefore to ensure and develop the highest working efficiency and truly triumphant spirit of the Russian soldiers has a most direct, practical, and vital bearing on the destiny of America and the other Allies. As a member ofthe Special Diplomatic Mission to Russia which had been charged by President Wilson with the responsibility of studying ways in which America and Russia might best cooperate in the war, I gave not a little attention, in accordance with the wish of our Chairman, Mr. Root, to the consideration of this large and press ing problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Turmoil: Memoirs; Military, Social, and Political IN the midst of the turmoil and bloodshed in Russia people perish and the real outlines of historical events are obliterated. It is for this reason that I have decided to publish these memoirs, in spite of the difficulties of work in my present condition of a refugee, unable to refer to any archives or documents and deprived of the possibility of discussing events with those who have taken part in them. The first part of my book deals chiefly with the Russian Army, with which my life has been closely linked up. Political, social and economic questions are discussed only in so far as I have found it necessary to describe their influence upon the course of events. Book excerpt: Force Structure, Tactics, and Modernization of the Russian Ground Forces The mighty Soviet Army is no more. The feckless Russian Army that stumbled into Chechnya is no more. Today's Russian Army is modern, better manned, better equipped and designed for maneuver combat under nuclear-threatened conditions. This is your source for the tactics, equipment, force structure and theoretical underpinnings of a major Eurasian power. Here's what the experts are saying: "A superb baseline study for understanding how and why the modern Russian Army functions as it does. Essential for specialist and generalist alike." -Colonel (Ret) David M. Glantz, foremost Western author on the Soviet Union in World War II and Editor of The Journal of Slavic Military Studies. "Congratulations to Les Grau and Chuck Bartles on filling a gap which has yawned steadily wider since the end of the USSR. Their book addresses evolving Russian views on war, including the blurring of its nature and levels, and the consequent Russian approaches to the Ground Forces' force structuring, manning, equipping, and tactics. Confidence is conferred on the validity of their arguments and conclusions by copious footnoting, mostly from an impressive array of primary sources. It is this firm grounding in Russian military writings, coupled with the authors' understanding of war and the Russian way of thinking about it, that imparts such an authoritative tone to this impressive work." -Charles Dick, former Director of the Combat Studies Research Centre, Senior Fellow at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, author of the 1991 British Army Field Manual, Volume 2, A Treatise on Soviet Operational Art and author of From Victory to Stalemate The Western Front, Summer 1944 and From Defeat to Victory, The Eastern Front, Summer 1944. "Dr. Lester Grau's and Chuck Bartles' professional research on the Russian Armed Forces is widely read throughout the world and especially in Russia. Russia's Armed Forces have changed much since the large-scale reforms of 2008, which brought the Russian Army to the level of the world's other leading armies. The speed of reform combined with limited information about their core mechanisms represented a difficult challenge to the authors. They have done a great job and created a book which could be called an encyclopedia of the modern armed forces of Russia. They used their wisdom and talents to explore vital elements of the Russian military machine: the system of recruitment and training, structure of units of different levels, methods and tactics in defense and offence and even such little-known fields as the Arctic forces and the latest Russian combat robotics." -Dr. Vadim Kozyulin, Professor of Military Science and Project Director, Project on Asian Security, Emerging Technologies and Global Security Project PIR Center, Moscow. "Probably the best book on the Russian Armed Forces published in North America during the past ten years. A must read for all analysts and professionals following Russian affairs. A reliable account of the strong and weak aspects of the Russian Army. Provides the first look on what the Russian Ministry of Defense learned from best Western practices and then applied them on Russian soil." -Ruslan Pukhov, Director of the Moscow-based Centre for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) and member of the Public Council of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense. Author of Brothers Armed: Military Aspects of the Crisis in Ukraine, Russia's New Army, and The Tanks of August.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Russia The fundamental function of human activity - the production of materials to satisfy the needs of the masses - has assumed an international form. Capital, the organizing force of production and exchange, passes rapidly from one country to another, uniting them by indestructible material ties. International organizations of capitalists are coming into being, which are held in check by labour organizations of an equally international type. Every invention, every improvement in the technique of production, every scientific discovery, is at once transmitted to every portion of the globe. Besides the exchange of products we Observe a mutual interchange of ideas, and the two form a common founda tion, a foundation both material and spiritual, for the future development of human culture. The separate members of the great family of the peoples and States Of the modern world are like the various portions of a single gigantic organism, or the links of a single chain. When one of these links is moved all the others promptly feel the movement. Every event that occurs in any country of the modern world is to-day an international event. The good old days are gone, when humanity lived in groups; when the individual might live all his life in his native town or village without knowing what was happening at a few miles' distance. The modern man is a citizen of the world. The telegraph cables which enmesh the globe force him to keep an eye upon all the countries Of the world. It is obvious that to the modern man a closer knowledge of the life of other peoples appears not only desirable, but necessary. The older nations - the French, Germans, and English - which have attained the highest degree of civilization, are in this respect in a favourable situation. Their way of life and their material and Spiritual activities serve as examples to other nations, and are the object of attentive study. But a knowledge of the younger and more backward nations is far less widespread. This ignorance is most perceptible in the case of those nations which are divided from Western Europe not only by geographical distance, but also by linguistic remoteness. All will remember how Europe was surprised by the apparition of Japan in the guise of a first-class Power, equipped with the technical methods of the Occident. NO one has yet forgotten the astonishment evoked by her army, so powerful and so highly trained, her Press, and her subtle and capable diplomacy.
