Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in History Chiefly Ecclesiastical The sketches here reprinted, with few exceptions, appeared originally in the pages of the Dublin Review. They do not pretend to be in any way original contributions, but merely amateur essays in a few of the more or less unfamiliar by-ways of history, chiefly ecclesiastical, based upon modern writers, whose books are indicated. The only excuse for their republication is in the hope that they may prove of some interest to Catholic readers, and especially that they may stimulate in some of our ecclesiastical students a taste for historical reading and study - so urgent a need at the present day. For this purpose I have added a list of the best books that may be consulted on each subject as an incentive to further research. The article numbered IV. was originally published by the C.T.S.; No. IX. appeared in the Rosary; No. XIII. in the Tablet; whilst No. X. was first issued as a separate pamphlet. The rest appeared in the Dublin. To the Editors of the latter review and of the other periodicals just mentioned I return my thanks for permission to reprint. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Church History Chiefly in Spain and France The student will see at once that the writer of the following pages has lived away from libraries, and that he has neither the means nor the pretension to write a Church History. These gleanings are only from a few outlying fields; but they have been honestly gathered, not pillaged in bulk from other men's sheaves. A good deal of misconception would be avoided if English Churchmen, desirous of information on the tenets of the Church of Rome, would seek it from accredited documents, not from manuals written in English ad hoc. The last compendious authoritative utterance of the Church of Rome is contained in the Acta et Decreta of the Latin-American Council held at Rome in 1899, and in the accompanying Appendix volume of documents (see Chap. xvi. below). An example will illustrate the difference between the two classes of publication. I have before me a i6mo vol. of 430 pages, entitled Catholic Belief, by the very Rev. Joseph Faa di Bruno, fourth edition, re-ordered and revised (Burns and Oates, 1883). It bears the imprimatur of Cardinal Manning. Not a word is said in it about the Cult of the Sacred Heart. The Latin-American Council was solemnly consecrated to the Sacred Heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches, Vol. 2 Under these circumstances, perhaps, it is fair to lay down that, while every care must be taken against the introduction of new, or the omission of existing ideas, in translating the original text, yet, in a book intended for general reading, faithfulness may be considered simply to consist in expressing in English the sense of the original the actual words of the latter being viewed mainly as directions into its sense, and scholarship being necessary in order to gain the full insight into that sense which they afford; and next, that, where something must be sacri ficed, precision or intelligibility, it is better in a popular work to be understood by those who are not critics, than to be applauded by those who are. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of a Century Embracing a Record of Individuals and Events Chiefly in the Early History of Bennington, Vt: And Its First Church The foundation of this volume is the discourse delivered at the Centennial Celebration of the organization of the Bennington First Church, the publication of which was requested by the note on the preceding page. The first nine chapters are, without essential modification, the discourse. Some account of the centennial celebration and the conclusion of the discourse make up chapter twenty-six. In view of publication, four subjects presented themselves for a more complete consideration than the writer had given to them, namely: the land-title controversy; the Bennington battle; the individual men and women of Bennington in the past times; and the Separatist antecedents of many of the first inhabitants, together with their promotion of civil liberty as to public worship. Hence so many pages devoted to these subjects, and a volume instead of a discourse. The writer has been in various ways much assisted by numerous kind friends of the work. Book Synopsis The Lucius Beebe Memorial Library by : Elizabeth Frances Ingram
Download or read book The Lucius Beebe Memorial Library written by Elizabeth Frances Ingram and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lucius Beebe Memorial Library: An Historical Sketch But the libraries of Puritan New England were very different from those of Merry England to which Sir Anthony referred. They were, like the people, made of sterner stuff. The Bible, Pilgrim's Progress, Plutarch's Lives, Paradise Lost, such were the books most often found in the home of the pioneer. The first library in South Reading, the name of which tradition has preserved for us, was the Social Library. It consisted chiefly of books on theological subjects and ecclesiastical history. Its origin is unknown, but it is supposed to date back to the middle of the eighteenth century. This library was supported by subscriptions and its policy was directed by the subscribers. Mr. Lilley Eaton in his valuable History of South Reading states that unpleasant differences arose among the members, so that many withdrew their names and their support, having previously, however, drawn out as many books as would be equal in value to their share in the library, and, he naively adds, they never took the trouble to return them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern Church History In placing this book in the hands of its publishers 1 hope to be regarded as showing my appreciation of the courtesy and kindness of the successive classes to which the lectures were delivered, in calling for their publication, as well as of the very gratifying manner in which this request was so re peatedly conveyed to me. I wish also in this way to indi cate the gratification I feel in recalling the gentlemanly bear ing of each class towards one whose only claim to their consideration was a sincere desire to be of service. The lectures were first delivered while Dr. T. J. Morgan was Professor of Church History in the Seminary; but chiefly since that important chair has been occupied by Dr. E. B. Hulbert. To both these gentlemen my thanks are due for the privilege of thus sharing with them in their work. It will not be improper, I trust, for me to speak of the special attention given by Dr. Hulbert to the department of church history treated of in these pages, and of the marked interest his students show in those aspects of historical Christianity which concern the church and the world as they now are. Under the leadership of President Northrup the Seminary is adapting its course of study in many ways to the peculiar needs of the present time, and in the particular here alluded to by no means least of all. But in the application of the Prophecies contained under these Seals, Trumpets, and Vials, as well as in. Other parts Of the Apocalypse, we have frequently deviated from the above-named writers, to substitute what we thought a more genuine expli cation. It must then be Observed, that an age and a century must not here be taken for synonymous terms; but by an age in this history we shall understand one Of the seven divisions of time above-mentioned; neither are these divisions of time equal.
