Book excerpt: Sketches by "Boz," Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People (commonly known as Sketches by Boz) is a collection of short pieces Charles Dickens published as a book in 1836, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people, and the whole work is divided into four sections: "Our Parish," "Scenes," "Characters" and "Tales." The material in the first three sections consists of non-narrative pen-portraits, but the last section comprises fictional stories. The sketches were originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836, then issued in instalments under their current title from 1837 to 1839. The sketch "Mr Minns and his Cousin" (originally titled "A Dinner at Poplar Walk"), was the first work of fiction Dickens ever published. It appeared in The Monthly Magazine in December 1833. Although Dickens continued to place pieces in that magazine, none of them bore a signature until August 1834, when "The Boarding House" appeared under the strange pen-name "Boz." A verse in Bentley's Miscellany for March 1837 recalled the public's perplexity about this pseudonym: "Who the dickens 'Boz' could be Puzzled many a learned elf, Till time unveiled the mystery, And 'Boz' appeared as Dickens's self." Dickens took the pseudonym from a nickname he had given his younger brother Augustus, whom he called "Moses" after a character in Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield. This, "being facetiously pronounced through the nose," became "Boses," which in turn was shortened to "Boz." The name remained coupled with "inimitable" until "Boz" eventually disappeared and Dickens became known as, simply, "The Inimitable."

Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's first published book, Sketches by Boz is a funny and touching collection of observation, fancy and fiction showing the London he knew in all its complexity - its streets, theatres, inns, pawnshops, law courts, prisons and, of course, the river Thames. His descriptions of everyday life and people seem to anticipate characters from his great novels - garrulous matrons, vulgar young clerks, Scrooge-like bachelors - while his powers of social critique shine in his unflinching depictions of the city's forgotten citizens, from child workers to prostitutes. This edition includes the original illustrations by George Cruikshank.

Book excerpt: Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. Sketches by Boz is the collection of short pieces he originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836. This richly varied collection of observations shows us the London at its best and worst – its streets, theatres, inns, pawnshops, law courts, prisons, omnibuses and the river Thames – in honest and visionary descriptions of everyday life and people. A startling mixture of humour and pathos, these sketches reveal London as wonderful terrain for an extraordinary young Dickens.

The result of this parrot-like accomplishment was, that he was not only perpetually quoting himself, but that he could never sit by and hear a misquotation from the "Swan of Avon " without setting the unfortunate delinquent right. He was always something of a wag; never missed an opportunity of saying what he considered a good thing, and invariably laughed until he cried at anything that appeared to him mirth-moving or ridiculous. "Well, girls!" said Uncle Tom, after the preparatory ceremony of kissing and how-d'ye-doing had been gone through--"how d'ye get on? Know your parts, eh?--Lucina, my dear, act ii., scene 1--place, left--cue--'Unknown fate, '--What's next, en?--Go on--'The heavens"' "Oh, yes," said Miss Lucina, "I recollect--'The heavens forbid But that our Iovos md comfoits sheuld lucrease Even as our days do grow 1 '" "Make a pause here and there," said the old gentleman, who was a great critic. "'But that our loves and comforts should increase'--emphasis on the last syllable, 'crease, '--loud 'even, '--one, two, three, four; then loud again, 'as our days do grow;' emphasis on days. That's the way, my dear; trust to your uncle for emphasis. Ah! Sem, my boy, how are you?" "Very well, thankee unGle," returned Mr. Sempronius, who had just appeared, looking something like a ringdove, with a small circle round each eye: the result of his constant corking. "Of course we see you on Thursday." "Of course, of course, my dear boy." "What a pity it is your nephew didn't think of making you prompter, Mr. Balderstone!" whispered Mrs. Joseph Porter; "you would have been invaluable." "Well, I flatter myself, I should have been tolerably up to the thing," responded Uncle Tom. "I must bespeak sitting next you on the...

Hence the importance of placing the document in context. It is necessary to unravel what its author or authors have said, how it has been said, when, why and where, always relating it to its historical moment.Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is considered by many to be the best novelist of the Victorian era.
