The principle which at starting has fascinated him is that of equilibrium, of mental and moral stagnation, of absolute indifference to all but self, of a pleasure which consists in the simple unhindered drawing of the breath, a torpidity like that of a surfeited boa-constrictor. Why was man made perfectible, when beast was not? Rousseau asks in effect. Why did Nature give him the fatal power to mould himself irrespective of her intentions, when she denied it to the world of animals? When man had no needs, he was content; when he had no virtues. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches and Studies in Southern Europe, Vol. 2 of 2 Sicily, in the centre of the Mediterranean, has been throughout all history the meeting-place and battle-ground of the races that contributed to civilize the West. It was here that the Greeks measured their strength against Ph nicia, and that Carthage fought her first duel with Rome. Here the bravery of Hellenes triumphed over barbarian force in the victories of Gelon and Timoleon. Here, in the harbor of Syracuse, the Athenian Empire succumbed to its own intemperate ambition. Here, in the end, Rome laid her mortmain upon Greek, Ph nician, and Sikeliot alike, turning the island into a granary and reducing its inhabitants to serfdom. When the classic age had closed, when Belisarius had vainly reconquered from the Goths for the empire of the East the fair island of Persephone and Zeus Olympius, then came the Mussulman, filling up with an interval of Oriental luxury and Arabian culture the period of utter deadness between the ancient and the modern world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Sketching Club: Letters and Studies on Landscape Art First, I received a kind invitation from Messrs. Roberts of Boston, and some American friends, to write a book on Landscape. It was to be very elementary as to practice, and to begin at the beginning, with the ordinary rules of drawing. It was also to be made palatable by means of descriptions and verbal sketches: and was to take the form of transactions of a Sketching Club, whose members were to exchange ideas by letter or conversation this involved digressions into criticism and history of art. Then it appeared that though my friends on the other side approved the first part or two as useful to students of drawing, they wanted a little more description of the English country life and ways, with which I am partially acquainted; and it was mentioned that as male and female characters existed in the book, they would have to make love to each other. Some excursuses on fox-hunting were also desired. These demands were accordingly supplied, I trust in moderation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noughts and Crosses: Stories Studies and Sketches It was not so much the little chap's look. But to the knot of his sea-kit there was tied a bunch of cottage-ficwers - sweet Williams, boy's love, love-lies-bleeding, a few common striped carna tions, and a rose or two - and the sight and smell of them in that frowsy 'bus were like tears on thirsty eyelids. We had ceased to pity what we were, but the heart is far withered that cannot pity what it has been; and it made us shudder to look on the young face set towards the road along which we had travelled so far. Only the minor actress dropped a tear; but she was used to expressing emotion, and half-way down the Strand the 'bus stopped and she left us. The woman with an incurable complaint touched me on the knee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "People don't read my poetry when I have gone to the trouble of writing it!" "The more shame to them," said his wife. "But, my dear, you know you never read it yourself." "Oh, that is altogether different. Besides you are improving, are you not?" She asked it a trifle anxiously, but the question set him off at once. "In twenty years' time - " he began eagerly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernini and Other Studies in the History of Art The essays presented in the following pages are the prod uct of no hasty thought. I am grateful to the kind friends who have encouraged their publication, and to the publishers for giving them so attractive a form. The choice Of illustrations has been difficult. It has seemed best, however, to reproduce in full the little-known sketches of Bernini showing the development, in his mind, of the design for the Piazza of St. Peter's, and the sculptor's models wrought by his own hands. For the rest I have thought that it would be more serviceable for the reader to have a few typical examples illustrating the main points of the text rather than a larger, and perhaps more confusing, selection of subjects from the almost inexhaustible wealth of available material. I am under deep obligation for the gen erous permission to include among the illustrations material in the Brandegee Collection (at Faulkner Farm, Brookline, Massachusetts) hitherto unpublished. The heliotype plates were prepared and printed under the direction of Mr. William C. Ramsay, of Boston. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Studies: Sketches and Poems No one can read Mrs. Stowe's writings as a whole with out perceiving how constant is the appeal to the religious sensibilities. Her greatest book, which took captive the humblest reader and such a genius in literature as George Sand, was in a marked degree a religious book; and again and again, even in playful scenes, there is a quick passage to the religious nature. The explanation is in the simple fact that Mrs. Stowe herself from early girlhood to her latest years was governed by religion, and it is not sur prising, therefore, that an entire volume Should be gathered from her writings exclusively given over to direct expres sion of religious feeling and thought. She would gladly, especially in her later life, have con fined herself to writing of this sort, for the realities of faith, especially the presence of the Divine Master, came to have a commanding power over her mind and heart, and to make her almost impatient of much concern about adventures of the ordinary sort. Even the reminiscence of the racy life of the New England of her childhood could not absorb her. I would much rather, she writes in 1876 to her son Charles, have written another such a book as Footsteps of the Master, but all, even the religious papers, are gone mad on serials. The book which she was then writing was Poyanne People, and the reader knows what a thread of religious experience runs through that lively narrative. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alfred the Great: A Sketch and Seven Studies In our English education we can hardly be said to have made sufficient use of the biographies of great and good men; and it may even be doubted whether we have fully realised the value to a people of heroes like Alfred, who so attractively represent the noblest elements of character. We quote with approval and re-echo the saying: Let me make the ballads of a nation, and I care not who makes the laws; but we might say with even greater fitness and significance: Let us only have highly gifted and stainless heroes whose charac ters may touch the imagination of our children and stir them to fine issues, and many other things in education sink to a secondary place. Thus the memory of such a King as Alfred is a possession of great price for all generations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Animal Life and Habits The present series of Sketches has been compiled with the view of affording general readers, and especially the young, some popular and yet trustworthy ideas regarding some of the most interesting groups of the animal world. The work may in fact be regarded as a natural history text-book adapted for use in Nature's school at large, and as a guide to the use of the observant powers, through the due exer cise of which all true ideas of Nature are acquired. Some of the Sketches have already appeared in Chambers's Journal, and are reprinted here with some additions, and with such alterations as were found to be necessary in adapting them for volume-form. The papers lay no claim to originality; but the day of grave errors in popular scien tific works is not yet past, and the author would fain hope that the Sketches may at least be found to possess the merit of correctness. The highest purpose this little work may serve is, that of fostering a love for the personal and direct observation of Nature. Knowledge so acquired invariably brings its own reward in the power it confers of discerning higher aspects in all the workes of Nature.' And as a result of such studies, we may say with Wordsworth of the most commonplace object around. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
