Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the Progress of Physical Science The stars appeared as so many luminous points fixed in the heavenly sphere, having the earth for a centre, and revolving on an am having that earth for a centre in the space of twenty-four hours. All the stars were found not to partake of this diurnal motion in the same degree; some were carried slowly to the east, and their paths, after a certain interval of time, returned upon themselves. The astronomers of the Alexandrian school set themselves to ascertain the encral laws of these motions. This could not Well done without a hypothesis; and the simplest was, that the planets move eastwards in circles, and at a uniform rate. Book excerpt: Drawings and short essays offer engaging and accessible explanations of key ideas in physics, from triangulation to relativity and beyond. Humans have been trying to understand the physical universe since antiquity. Aristotle had one vision (the realm of the celestial spheres is perfect), and Einstein another (all motion is relativistic). More often than not, these different understandings begin with a simple drawing, a pre-mathematical picture of reality. Such drawings are a humble but effective tool of the physicist's craft, part of the tradition of thinking, teaching, and learning passed down through the centuries. This book uses drawings to help explain fifty-one key ideas of physics accessibly and engagingly. Don Lemons, a professor of physics and author of several physics books, pairs short, elegantly written essays with simple drawings that together convey important concepts from the history of physical science. Lemons proceeds chronologically, beginning with Thales' discovery of triangulation, the Pythagorean monocord, and Archimedes' explanation of balance. He continues through Leonardo's description of “earthshine” (the ghostly glow between the horns of a crescent moon), Kepler's laws of planetary motion, and Newton's cradle (suspended steel balls demonstrating by their collisions that for every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction). Reaching the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Lemons explains the photoelectric effect, the hydrogen atom, general relativity, the global greenhouse effect, Higgs boson, and more. The essays place the science of the drawings in historical context—describing, for example, Galileo's conflict with the Roman Catholic Church over his teaching that the sun is the center of the universe, the link between the discovery of electrical phenomena and the romanticism of William Wordsworth, and the shadow cast by the Great War over Einstein's discovery of relativity. Readers of Drawing Physics with little background in mathematics or physics will say, “Now I see, and now I understand.”

Book excerpt: In 'The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century', written in 1887, Thomas Henry Huxley explores the scientific and technological advancements of the previous fifty years, comparing them to the progress of earlier eras. Despite being written over a century ago, Huxley's philosophy of science still holds relevance and offers valuable insights. Huxley delves into the advancements in science that led to improvements in industrial production, technical processes, and the emergence of new processes. He also provides a fascinating discussion of the contributions of Descartes, Newton, Leibnitz, Tyndall, Darwin, and Bain, among others. This book provides a comprehensive and insightful look at the history of scientific progress and its impact on humankind, paving the way for even greater discoveries in the centuries to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recent Development of Physical Science In recent years we have witnessed a great development of physical science. The different sections into which physical knowledge is, for the sake of convenience, divided, have grown each within its own domain; and, moreover, have shown increasing signs of extending beyond the boundaries arbitrarily traced between them. The methods of physics, in the restricted sense of that word, are being more and more applied to chemical and biological problems, while many questions in physics can only be investigated by those with mathematical or chemical training. Thus it happens that an acquaintance with the knowledge newly acquired in one department of science is necessary for the study of another; indeed, the phenomena which need for their interpretation the methods of two branches of science have proved often the most fruitful field of inquiry.
