Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Days in Europe and What We Saw There It seems to be necessary in issuing a new book to give some reason for its publication. This book is intended to convey an idea of what can be seen in Europe in the time indicated in its title while traveling by the ordinary methods, and with a fair degree of comfort, and covers a number of what seem to us very interesting subjects. It follows a similar work issued one year previous covering a trip through Cuba and Mexico, called "Spain's Lost Jewels," and which was so kindly received that the writer is encouraged to this second effort in the line of book making. Anyone contemplating a trip to Europe should allow at least two months for travel and sightseeing between the time of his landing and departure from the other side. This is hardly enough, but adding to this the time in getting started and crossing the ocean both ways, makes nearly three months, which is about as long a period as the ordinary business man feels like devoting to one season's vacation. Having this amount of time at our disposal, we followed the route indicated in these letters, and, in looking back, we hardly see how we could have done better unless we had taken more time. But if we had, the book would have probably been too big. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Hundred Days in Europe After an interval of more than fifty years I propose taking a second look at some parts of Europe. It is a Rip Van Winkle experiment which I am promising myself. The changes wrought by half a century in the countries I visited amount almost to a transformation. I left the England of William the Fourth, of the Duke of Wellington, of Sir Robert Peel; the France of Louis Philippe, of Marshal Soult, of Thiers, of Guizot. I went from Manchester to Liverpool by the new railroad, the only one I saw in Europe. I looked upon England from the box of a stage-coach, upon France from the coupe of a diligence, upon Italy from the cushion of a carrozza. The broken windows of Apsley House were still boarded up when I was in London. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: When five-year-old Robert Crouse saw a 1910 Curtis pusher biplane fly over his hometown in Tennessee, he was immediately mesmerized. After he watched the plane gently land behind the trees a short distance from his house, he informed anyone who would listen that one day he would fly a plane just like that one. In his memoir There I Was ..., Crouse chronicles how his fascination with airplanes grew throughout his childhood and eventually led him on an unforgettable journey as a young airman during World War II. When Crouse was a seventeen-year-old high school senior, the United States became firmly embroiled in World War II. Although he was too young and suffered from a congenital heart condition, Crouse could hardly wait to get into uniform. As Crouse recounts the details of how he was eventually drafted in 1943 despite his medical challenges and later flew thirty-one missions in B-25s, he provides a real-life glimpse into what it was like for thousands of young men to serve their country in perilous times. There I Was ... couples historical photographs with personal anecdotes and provides a captivating narrative sure to entertain World War II and airplane buffs alike.

Book excerpt: Illinois congressman Henry Hyde once remarked that after reading Eleanor Roosevelt's editorials in the 1950s, he was driven into the embrace of the Republican Party. Similarly all the liberal talking heads appearing on the cable news channels have driven this longstanding Goldwater Republican to write a response. In it the author describes Republican Values from the perspective of growing up in an entrepreneurial family and his own self-employment in the financial industry. Drawing on his experiences as a Navy Midshipman while attending a private Eastern University during the turbulent 1960s, and then as a Marine combat officer during the Vietnam Era when domestic terrorism was in vogue, he discusses the politically correct's childish behavior from that unique perspective. As a former professional military officer and later a trained economist and financial analyst who's spent three decades successfully anticipating the impact of public policy on the financial markets, the author addresses issues dominating the election of 2004. This includes the politically correct's failure to understand the war on terror, understanding that their rhetoric can best be understood from the perspective of what Stalin called 'social fascism' with the accompanying need to demonize one's opposition.
