Excerpt: ...and his company against both Moses and Aaron: " You take too much upon you," Numb. xvi. 3. To this strife between Moses and his brother and sister, the Lord puts an end by very extraordinary words. I will read them, because one part of them belongs evidently to our present purpose: " Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, (as there were seventy set apart in the preceding chapter, ) I the Lord will make myself known to him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream," Numb. xii. 6. (And these were the usual ways and means of God's darting in prophetical light into the minds of his prophets; either when awake, by visions; or when asleep, by dreams; and both were attended, doubtless, with such signatures of God's interest therein, as did satisfy and secure their faith). " But my servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all my house," ver. 7. (I have set him above those ways and ordinances.) "With him will I speak mouth to mouth," (the same with face to face, " as a man speaketh unto his friend," Exod. xxxiiL 11; and in Deut. xxxiv. 10. So Moses saith of God's way of giving the law: " The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount, out of the midst of the fire," Deut. v. 4.) even apparently, and not in dark speeches, (as Psa. Ixxviii. 2, " I will utter dark sayings of old;") and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: (as much beyond the other, as seeing is beyond hearing darkly of a person or tiling.) "Wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" ver. 8. Now, what was this similitude of the Lord that Moses did behold, and was so dignified by reason of this singular privilege? You know he tells them: " Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves, for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day...

Book Synopsis Future Grace, Revised Edition by : John Piper
Download or read book Future Grace, Revised Edition written by John Piper and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore this stunning quality of God’s grace: It never ends! In this revision of a foundational work, John Piper reveals how grace is not only God’s undeserved gift to us in the past, but also God’s power to make good happen for us today, tomorrow, and forever. True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.
Book Synopsis Our Lord Prays for His Own: Thoughts on John 17 by : Marcus Rainsford
Download or read book Our Lord Prays for His Own: Thoughts on John 17 written by Marcus Rainsford and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS chapter is emphatically the Lord’s prayer. That which we commonly call the Lord’s prayer He taught His disciples, but did not use Himself. The petition, “Forgive us our trespasses,” could never have been uttered by the Lord Jesus Christ. This prayer, on the other hand, is His own—His disciples were not invited to unite in it; it was a prayer they did not and could not utter. Evidently the Lord spake so as to be heard, and the disciples listened. The Holy Ghost has provided that not one petition should be lost to the church of God. We often find our Lord teaching His disciples to pray, and we read of Him spending even whole nights in prayer; but we never find Him praying with His disciples. Indeed, there would seem to be something incongruous in Christ kneeling down with His disciples for prayer; there must always have been something peculiar in His petitions. At this time His work on earth was well-nigh ended: nothing remained for Him but to die: “I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do.” (v. 4.) The Last Supper was over. The Lord had dispensed to His disciples the broken bread and poured-out wine, memorials of His dying love; He had expressed to them His desire, that in remembrance of Him, they should often gather together and thus show forth His death in this illustration and their union with Himself and with each other, until His return to them in glory. He had washed their feet; He had comforted them; He had opened His whole heart to them. He now opens it for them to Him before whom “all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid;” and having poured out His soul into the ear, and into the bosom of God, He went forth into Gethsemane. May God the Spirit be with us and give unction and understanding to our hearts, while we meditate on His most precious prayer.
