Book Synopsis Reggae Routes by : Kevin O'Brien Chang
Download or read book Reggae Routes written by Kevin O'Brien Chang and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaican music can be roughly divided into four eras, each with a distinctive beat - ska, rocksteady, reggae and dancehall. Ska dates from about 1960 to mid-1966, rocksteady from 1966 to 1968, while from 1969 to 1983 reggae was the popular beat. The reggae era had two phases, 'early reggae' up to 1974 and 'roots reggae' up to 1983. Since 1983 dancehall has been the prevalent sound. The authors describe each stage in the development of the music, identifying the most popular songs and artists, highlighting the significant social, political and economic issues as they affected the musical scene. While they write from a Jamaican perspective, the intended audience is 'any person, local or foreign, interested in an intelligent discussion of reggae music and Jamaica.'.

Book Synopsis The Battle Of France by : Peter Cornwell
Download or read book The Battle Of France written by Peter Cornwell and published by After the Battle. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 1572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Cornwell tells the story of the greatest air battle of the Second World War when six nations were locked in combat over north-western Europe for a traumatic six weeks in 1940. He describes the day-to-day events as the battle unfolds, and details the losses suffered by all six nations involved: Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and, rather belatedly, Italy. As far as RAF fighter squadrons in France were concerned, it was an all-Hurricane show, yet it was the Blenheim and Battle crews who suffered the brunt of the casualties. Every aircraft lost or damaged through enemy action while operating in France is listed together with the fate of the crews. The RAF lost more than a thousand aircraft of all types over the Western Front during the six-week battle, the French Air Force 1,400, but Luftwaffe losses were even higher at over 1,800 aircraft.

Download or read book The Last Legionary written by Paul Elliott and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In AD 400 Roman rule in Britain was collapsing as the thinly stretched empire was beseiged on all sides. In 'The Last Legionary', Paul Elliot explores all aspects of Late Roman military life, from recruitment to weaponry, marriage to wages, warfare to religion. It explores the world of the Roman soldier through the eyes of one man, posted to a British garrison at the edge of the empire, and follows the soldier's life through training and battle, marriage and business dealings, finally following him south as he leaves Britain for good in defence of Rome. When the legionary finally escapes the worst posting in the Roman Empire, it is only to join what effectively beame a death march over the Alps, without food or shelter. To know what it was like to face the chanted battle cry, the charge and slashing axes of the Goths, and to understand why the order 'march out!' was so terrifying, read Paul Elliott's mesmerising, meticulously accurate account.

Book excerpt: This book presents a novel treatment of the metre of Beowulf, an Old English epic poem of uncertain date and origin which is nonetheless considered one of the gems of Germanic Alliterative Verse.
