Book Synopsis Six Themes on Variation by : Steven James Cox
Download or read book Six Themes on Variation written by Steven James Cox and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculus of variations is a beautiful subject with a rich history and with origins in the minimization problems of calculus. Although it is now at the core of many modern mathematical fields, it does not have a well-defined place in most undergraduate mathematics curricula. This volume should nevertheless give the undergraduate reader a sense of its great character and importance. Interesting functionals, such as area or energy, often give rise to problems whose most natural solution occurs by differentiating a one-parameter family of variations of some function. The critical points of the functional are related to the solutions of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. These differential equations are at the heart of the calculus of variations and its applications to wave mechanics, minimal surfaces, soap bubbles, and modeling traffic flow. All are readily accessible to advanced undergraduates. This book is derived from a workshop sponsored by Rice University. It is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the calculus of variations and its applications to other subjects.

Book Synopsis A Primer on the Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory by : Mike Mesterton-Gibbons
Download or read book A Primer on the Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory written by Mike Mesterton-Gibbons and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculus of variations is used to find functions that optimize quantities expressed in terms of integrals. Optimal control theory seeks to find functions that minimize cost integrals for systems described by differential equations. This book is an introduction to both the classical theory of the calculus of variations and the more modern developments of optimal control theory from the perspective of an applied mathematician. It focuses on understanding concepts and how to apply them. The range of potential applications is broad: the calculus of variations and optimal control theory have been widely used in numerous ways in biology, criminology, economics, engineering, finance, management science, and physics. Applications described in this book include cancer chemotherapy, navigational control, and renewable resource harvesting. The prerequisites for the book are modest: the standard calculus sequence, a first course on ordinary differential equations, and some facility with the use of mathematical software. It is suitable for an undergraduate or beginning graduate course, or for self study. It provides excellent preparation for more advanced books and courses on the calculus of variations and optimal control theory.

Book Synopsis Japan: Theme & Variations by : Charles E. Tuttle
Download or read book Japan: Theme & Variations written by Charles E. Tuttle and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Japanese poetry contains over 200 poems by some 153 Americans writing of their impressions and experiences of Japan. If Japan forms the theme of the poems collected here, the variations are certainly the deep feeling so many Americans have come to have for Japan and the Japanese People. And the Resulting Choral is, we are convinced, both a thing of beauty and unique expression of goodwill between nations. Through the many years and in many countries poets have been entranced with the romances suggested by the name Japan. They have enthralled the sweetness of its children; serenity of its art; the beauty of its fields, seas, and mountains; the grandeur of its ancient architecture and quiet gardens; colorful pageantry of its history and deep emotions of its drama; the industriousness of its workers, charm of its women, and indomitable character of its people.

This book was released on 1989-05-02 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Occasionally, there comes along a popular science book that both scientists and non-scientist can read with pleasure and profit, and this is one."—The New Yorker Devoted to sharing their own delight and awe before the fundamental mysteries of the cosmos, Frank Wilczek (winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics) and science writer Betsy Devine also have a serious purpose: to reveal to the lay reader how a heightened perception can respond to timeless themes of the physical universe. For example, they show that even the most exotic theories always confirm that physical laws are precisely the same throughout the universe, and they explain how we have learned that the most massive molten stars and the tiniest frozen particles are in physical harmony. In their descriptions of the workings of the half-known universe, Wilczek and Devine bring all of us face to face with the beauty of eternal order and the inevitability of rational ends and beginnings.
