While the Western itself may seem simple (it isn't quite), an explanation of its popularity cannot be; for the Western, like any myth, stands between individual human consciousness and society. If a myth is popular, it must somehow appeal to or reinforce the individuals who view it by communicating a symbolic meaning to them. This meaning must, in turn, reflect the particular social institutions and attitudes that have created and continue to nourish the myth. Thus, a myth must tell its viewers about themselves and their society. This study, which takes up the question of the Western as an American myth, will lead us into abstract structural theory as well as economic and political history. Mostly, however, it will take us into the movies, the spectacular and not-so-spectacular sagebrush of the cinema. Unlike most works of social science, the data on which my analysis is based is available to all of my readers, either at the local theater or, more likely, on the late, late show. I hope you will take the opportunity, whenever it is offered, to check my findings and test my interpretations; the effort is small and the rewards are many. And if your wife, husband, mother, or child asks you why you are wasting your time staring at Westerns on TV in the middle of the night, tell them firmly—as I often did—that you are doing research in social science. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1977. Book excerpt: In Chaparral Bend a gallows is being raised for youngster Ty Garland, accused of bank robbery. But is he really guilty? His old ma claims he is innocent, and town tamer, Crossdraw Kitchenbrand, is inclined to believe her, especially as the notorious gunman Angel Addison and his gang, the Yuma boys, seem to be involved. Crossdraw's search for answers brings him up against big ranch-owner Landon Clovis and leads him to the outlaw roost of Addisonville. He can count on the support of the old woman and a girl he has rescued, but will that be enough to succeed against overwhelming odds? Will his six-guns finally bring justice?

This book was released on 2019-04-14 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of I.W Publications is fascinating. In the late 1950s, when the comic world went into a slump, Israel Waldman hit on the idea of buying up storage facilities and physical materials of defunct comic companies. With the letterpress plates in hand, he started to churn out cheap reprints of comics from these (and other companies). It was done without regard to intellectual property rights, and of course most of his books were entirely illegal - - but since most of the companies were no longer around, that didn't bother him much. In 1958, and again in 1963-64, Waldman produced a total of 332 issues covering 118 different titles. The numbering was erratic, the contents didn't always match the cover, and the quality varied widely. Interestingly, I.W. did produce one original comic (Marty Mouse, 1958) and many of the books had original covers by well-respected artists of the day. The I.W. Reprints (aka Super Comics) are pooh-poohed by some collectors today, but the true comic fan and historian see them as a part of history, alternative versions of stories - and for the reprinter today, with most of the books now in the public domain, occasionally better versions of stories than we can find in their original form. BLAZING SIX GUNS was a ten-issue anthology, whose title was probably decided when I.W. Realized they had the cover plate for BLAZING SIX-GUNS #1 (Avon 1952)-- one less thing to think about, right? The comics this series was 'derived" from ran across many publishers from the late 40s through mid-50s, and while some stories are unattributed, many were drawn by the top masters of the day. We have five of those issues in this, our first volume. This is an economical black & white version of our great collection! Book excerpt: “A thrilling, action-filled suspense novel.... Those who loved Balson’s other books like Once We Were Brothers and Karolina’s Twins will love this latest entry.” —The Huffington Post The Trust, from Ronald H. Balson, the international bestselling author of Once We Were Brothers, finds private investigator Liam Taggart returning to his childhood home for an uncle's funeral, only to discover his death might not have been natural. When his uncle dies, Liam Taggart reluctantly returns to his childhood home in Northern Ireland for the funeral—a home he left years ago after a bitter confrontation with his family, never to look back. But when he arrives, Liam learns that not only was his uncle shot to death, but that he’d anticipated his own murder: In an astonishing last will and testament, Uncle Fergus has left his entire estate to a secret trust, directing that no distributions be made to any person until the killer is found. Did Fergus know, but refuse to name, his killer? Was this a crime of revenge, a vendetta leftover from Northern Ireland’s bloody sectarian war? After all, the Taggarts were deeply involved in the IRA. Or is it possible that the killer is a family member seeking Fergus’s estate? Otherwise, why postpone distributions to the heirs? Most menacingly, does the killer now have his sights on other family members? As his investigation draws Liam farther and farther into the past he has abandoned, he realizes he is forced to reopen doors long ago shut and locked. Now, accepting the appointment as sole trustee of the Fergus Taggart Trust, Liam realizes he has stepped into the center of a firestorm.
