Book excerpt: THE WAY OF THE GUN... In the years between the end of the Civil War and the dawn of the 20th century, when much of the American West was still a frontier and word-of-mouth was the primary conduit for information from one territory to the next, the line between fact and legend was hazy at best. Stories of bigger-than-life figures emerged and traveled quickly, spreading across the plains like wildfire and cutting through desert country like a hot wind. Their names were only whispered around campfires or in smoky saloons, but their reputations were nearly as powerful as the weapons on their belts. Some were soldiers and lawmen, others gamblers and thieves. Still others defied description completely, but all were rugged and resourceful men and women, fast on a horse and even faster on the draw, working inside or outside the law - and often exploring the wide-open spaces in between. SIX-GUN LEGENDS returns to those thrilling days of yesteryear with stories by ten talented writers: Fred Adams, Terry Alexander, Jim Beard, John C. Bruening, Trevor Holliday, Jeffrey J. Mariotte, Terrence McCauley, Will Murray, Christopher Ryan and Duane Spurlock. Each of these storytellers spins a tale of the mystery, mayhem, intrigue, and adventure that inevitably unfold when one of these legendary entities steps out of the collective imagination and into the spotlight with guns blazing. Saddle up and take a ride into the past - but be ready to make a fast draw at any moment along the way. Sooner or later, this trail will bring you face to face with the SIX-GUN LEGENDS of the Old West.

Book excerpt: On the Texas-Mexican border during the pre-Civil War era, "Thirty-Thirty" Martinue, with his Lazy R spread, and Josiah Zepeda and his Boxed X ranch, are drawn into an almost inevitable generations-long range war over control of the huge expanse of scrub land outside Brownsville, Texas. During a cattle drive to Kansas, Thirty-Thirty's young son, Red Martinue, meets the beautiful Celeste Kalinec, a professional singer in a Dodge City saloon, and immediately falls in love with her. She leaves her much-older husband, who's been abusing her, and returns with the young man to Texas. Celeste sets up house with Red in the ranch country, but ultimately becomes dissatisfied with the heat, hard work, and lack of social interaction. Under pressure from his pretty wife, Red finally sells his half of the Lazy R to the Zepedas, and moves into town, and there he and his wife become successful business entrepreneurs. However, Duncan Zepeda, Josiah's son, wants Celeste for his own. The two old men and their two younger heirs finally face off in a classic six-gun confrontation on Main Street, settling the ancient feud once and for all. A great action- and romance-packed saga of the Old West: it doesn't get much grittier than this!

Book excerpt: Welcome to the Blister, a bizarre other-world colonized by humans sometime in the 22nd century, which quickly became a hotly contested source of fertile land and natural resources long ago exhausted on Earth. In this new frontier, a rogue gunslinger and his companion wander across a wilderness in the grips of a civil war, encountering lawlessness, natives, and perversions of civilization in a world at the crossroads between the past and the future. The fact that said gunslinger is a bio-surgically modified silverback gorilla toting a pair of enormous revolvers is neither here nor there -

Book excerpt: A wanted man... Lew Clennan has returned to his old town Tinkettle Basin with a price on his head and revenge on his mind. After being wrongly accused of murder, Lew has bounty hunters on his trail and there are reward posters for his arrest all over the state. But Lew has bigger things to worry about. Gun-wielding land grabber Eli Brix and his gang have murdered Lew's two brothers and father, mercilessly taking the land that the family had worked so hard to build up. To make matters worse, Brix is building a mini-empire in Tinkettle country and Lew is running out of allies to help take him down. Can Lew organize a revolt against Brix, whilst avoiding the hired bounties who are on his tail? At least he has the old Swede Lars Lundgren on his side, who manages to throw the bounty hunters off Lew's trail. But when Brix hears that Lew Clennan is back in town, he recognizes the threat that Lew's presence could cause. Now, the risk of danger is even higher for Lew. Not only is the law after him, but so is the lawless Brix, a man who tends to get his way through whatever means possible. To make things worse for Lew, word on the street is that Brix's takeover of his family land was an entirely legitimate process. But Lew doesn't believe it for a second, and is determined to get to the bottom of what really happened. Lew Clennan, the Six-Gun Prodigal, has a mission on his hands and vengeance in his heart. Will he be able to avenge his family and bring Brix down for good? Or will the land grabber have his way again, and establish his control of Tinkettle Basin? Anthony Arthur Glynn was born in Manchester in 1929, and had a disrupted wartime childhood, including enduring the Luftwaffe's blitzing of the city in 1940 and 1941. Drawn to art and writing from an early age, be quickly became interested in all kinds of books and devoured popular fiction. He started work as a textile designer in Manchester at sixteen and studied the subject at Manchester Regional College of Art in the evenings. After two years' National Service in the army, he became a reporter on a weekly newspaper in Cheshire during his early twenties. Since retiring, he frequently visits the US, researching authentic backgrounds for new Western novels. His other western adventures include, Sixgun Showdown, Guns Across Red River and The Lonesome Gun.

Book excerpt: Called the King of the Pulps, Frederick Schiller Faust, aka Max Brand, wrote nearly 400 Westerns from The Untamed to Destry Rides Again--a total of more than 220 books in this genre. Yet Max Brand also created Dr. Kildare (of books, films, and television) and wrote under twenty-one pseudonyms, in another dozen genres. This book removes the mask, with deeply personal memoirs from family, friends and fellow writers, taking us through his orphaned boyhood on the brutal ranches of California, his frustrating decades in Italy, as both a classical poet and a fast-action pulpist, to his heroic death as a war correspondent on the World War II battlefields. Faust's life story is augmented by a complete bibliography of his work--over a thousand books, stories, and films--plus the first listing of works about Faust.
