Book excerpt: Winner, 2020 Body and Embodiment Best Publication Award, given by the American Sociological Association Honorable Mention, 2020 Sociology of Sex and Gender Distinguished Book Award, given by the American Sociological Association How the female body has been racialized for over two hundred years There is an obesity epidemic in this country and poor black women are particularly stigmatized as “diseased” and a burden on the public health care system. This is only the most recent incarnation of the fear of fat black women, which Sabrina Strings shows took root more than two hundred years ago. Strings weaves together an eye-opening historical narrative ranging from the Renaissance to the current moment, analyzing important works of art, newspaper and magazine articles, and scientific literature and medical journals—where fat bodies were once praised—showing that fat phobia, as it relates to black women, did not originate with medical findings, but with the Enlightenment era belief that fatness was evidence of “savagery” and racial inferiority. The author argues that the contemporary ideal of slenderness is, at its very core, racialized and racist. Indeed, it was not until the early twentieth century, when racialized attitudes against fatness were already entrenched in the culture, that the medical establishment began its crusade against obesity. An important and original work, Fearing the Black Body argues convincingly that fat phobia isn’t about health at all, but rather a means of using the body to validate race, class, and gender prejudice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The Woman in the Middle is the story of one man’s journey searching for the “perfect” woman and all the experiences and lessons learned from different female encounters along the way. He discovers revelations of “the Why” that women choose the men that they want and ultimately end up with. Also revealed is an understanding of a woman's mentality towards men and how that helps or hinders the success of her relationship endgame. The Woman in the Middle presents honesty and truth directly from real observations and dialogue from conversations with actual women. Declarations shared that men before could only receive in separate private discussions can now be presented and applied to their own thoughts and reasoning. This is the book that can either confirm a man’s assumptions concerning why women think the way they do or can simply reconstruct the idea of what a woman’s thoughts are entirely. Full of first hand stories and circumstances that show women in a new and insightful light, The Woman in the Middle seeks to question the notion that women are from Venus and men are from Mars. Instead, we may all be a little closer than we appear to be. About the Author M.J. Rachal founded a local music magazine in 2014 and wrote music review blogs for local musicians and artists for a few years. He is a former Division 1 football player and interned at a radio station for a couple of years. Rachal created a life and relationship mini-podcast with his dad before writing this book. He plans on creating a multimedia company to give a voice to the voiceless.

Book excerpt: Western culture has endlessly represented the ways in which love miraculously erupts in people’s lives, the mythical moment in which one knows someone is destined for us, the feverish waiting for a phone call or an email, the thrill that runs down our spine at the mere thought of him or her. Yet, a culture that has so much to say about love is virtually silent on the no less mysterious moments when we avoid falling in love, where we fall out of love, when the one who kept us awake at night now leaves us indifferent, or when we hurry away from those who excited us a few months or even a few hours before. In The End of Love, Eva Illouz documents the multifarious ways in which relationships end. She argues that if modern love was once marked by the freedom to enter sexual and emotional bonds according to one’s will and choice, contemporary love has now become characterized by practices of non-choice, the freedom to withdraw from relationships. Illouz dubs this process by which relationships fade, evaporate, dissolve, and break down “unloving.” While sociology has classically focused on the formation of social bonds, The End of Love makes a powerful case for studying why and how social bonds collapse and dissolve. Particularly striking is the role that capitalism plays in practices of non-choice and “unloving.” The unmaking of social bonds, she argues, is connected to contemporary capitalism which is characterized by practices of non-commitment and non-choice, practices that enable the quick withdrawal from a transaction and the quick realignment of prices and the breaking of loyalties. Unloving and non-choice have in turn a profound impact on society and economics as they explain why people may be having fewer children, increasingly living alone, and having less sex. The End of Love presents a profound and original analysis of the effects of capitalism and consumer culture on personal relationships and of what the dissolution of personal relationships means for capitalism.

Book excerpt: It is at the point where you are no longer ashamed or embarrassed by the key components of your process that purpose is released to freely express itself through you to your world and your sphere(s) of influence. What portions of your process have you empowered to hold you back? From Stagnation to Transformation is Clifton Pettyjohn’s emancipation proclamation from years of torpidity. Stagnation is not merely the absence of productivity but rather it is the art of producing beneath your abilities or beneath the quality of production associated with the essence of your purpose. Therefore, this book is not only for individuals in search of their purpose but also for those who are capable of cognitively expressing their purpose but lack the ability to generate the required amount of energy to consistently produce with purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to provide postgraduate researchers with guidance on selecting and applying sociotechnical theories to the study of information systems, including how they can be combined to complement each other. Until now it has been difficult to source advice on the application of these theories, and there has been no single book that combines multiple theories as this does. Examining the impacts of technological developments and seeking to understand how humans interact with computers and systems is a dynamic field but can often confuse researchers with the overwhelming number of social theories that are utilised to derive insights. Instead, the author in this book breaks down some of the most popular theories used to underpin information system research, such as activity theory (AT), actor-network theory (ANT), contingency theory (CT), diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory, structuration theory (ST), and the technology acceptance model (TAM). By doing so, this book serves to enable a simpler, faster selection of appropriate theories, and a more effective and productive application that leads to richer, more rigorous research outcomes. Written for postgraduates, researchers, and academics in the fields of information technology and information systems, this book provides a valuable resource of sociotechnical research methodologies that will enable and enhance future studies.
