Book Synopsis A Pew-Sitter’s Search for God by : Houston M. Burnside
Download or read book A Pew-Sitter’s Search for God written by Houston M. Burnside and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houston Burnside’s journey of faith began in his childhood – not unlike most children. This book helps the reader understand how people who touch us influence the images of God we take with us all our lives. This author was a seeker from the beginning. He shares in beautiful, and sometimes painful stories, how his concept of God changed through his life experiences. Every opportunity that came his way to test his faith was connected to people he learned to include in his circle of faith. He searched for God in family hardships and relationships...in a grandmother who raised him during the first decade of his life...with a loving mother who cared for him in the growing years...and as an underage Marines in China where he met and loved missionaries who helped him on his journey. Coming home, he married and had a family of his own bringing high points of joy and challenges. Houston tells his incredible story of seeking and winning a higher education which prepared him for pastoral ministry. He was ordained but still seeking. At 30 years old, he sought God among the books and writings of giant theologians and philosophers as he studied for his Ph D. He found God there, too, in the most unexpected places. Houston Burnside weaves his remarkable stories across the stepping-stones of change, bringing him through his 27-year career as a professor at San Diego State University. A Pew-sitter’s Search for God will help you recognize the people in your life who impact your thinking and decision-making. As the author says, “The quest never ends.” The book offers quiet satisfaction and hope that all of life is good as long as the seeker never gives up.

Book Synopsis Babysitter by : Miriam Forman-Brunell
Download or read book Babysitter written by Miriam Forman-Brunell and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2009-07-26 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Friday nights many parents want to have a little fun together—without the kids. But “getting a sitter”—especially a dependable one—rarely seems trouble-free. Will the kids be safe with “that girl”? It’s a question that discomfited parents have been asking ever since the emergence of the modern American teenage girl nearly a century ago. In Babysitter, Miriam Forman-Brunell brings critical attention to the ubiquitous, yet long-overlooked babysitter in the popular imagination and American history. Informed by her research on the history of teenage girls’ culture, Forman-Brunell analyzes the babysitter, who has embodied adults’ fundamental apprehensions about girls’ pursuit of autonomy and empowerment. In fact, the grievances go both ways, as girls have been distressed by unsatisfactory working conditions. In her quest to gain a fuller picture of this largely unexamined cultural phenomenon, Forman-Brunell analyzes a wealth of diverse sources, such as The Baby-sitter’s Club book series, horror movies like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, urban legends, magazines, newspapers, television shows, pornography, and more. Forman-Brunell shows that beyond the mundane, understandable apprehensions stirred by hiring a caretaker to “mind the children” in one’s own home, babysitters became lightning rods for society’s larger fears about gender and generational change. In the end, experts’ efforts to tame teenage girls with training courses, handbooks, and other texts failed to prevent generations from turning their backs on babysitting.
Download or read book Searching Behaviour written by W.J. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about proximate mechanisms. Although some theoreti cal structure is used to introduce the subject, the intent is to offer a comprehensive view of the mechanistic side of searching (or foraging) so as to balance the current emphasis of books on mathematical and functional models. It seems to me that the pendulum needs to swing back to studies of how animals behave, and that maybe in so doing models will become valuable again in driving experimentation. I have probably included too many examples in this book, and some are even presented in great detail. Hopefully, they provide a complete picture of the kind of animals used, the experimental setup, the kinds of data yielded, and how the data were analysed. I have done this in response to frustrating experiences of reading chapters in behavioural ecobgy books that provide insufficient information with which to evaluate an author's conclusion.

Martin's beloved Baby-Sitters Club series In 1986, the first-ever meeting of the Baby-Sitters Club was called to order in a messy bedroom strewn with RingDings, scrunchies, and a landline phone. Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, and Mary Anne launched the club that birthed an entire generation of loyal readers. Ann M. In We Are the Baby-Sitters Club, writers and a few visual artists from the original BSC generation will reflect on the enduring legacy of Ann M. Martin's beloved series, thirty-five years later—celebrating the BSC's profound cultural influence. Contributors include Paperback Crush author Gabrielle Moss, illustrator SiobhÁn Gallagher, and filmmaker Sue Ding, as well as New York Times bestselling author Kristen Arnett, Lambda Award–finalist Myriam Gurba, Black Girl Nerds founder Jamie Broadnax, and Paris Review contributor Frankie Thomas. This is why so many child-care programs are exempt from the child-care legislation that’s intended to protect children. The bottom line? You can’t count on anyone else to guarantee your child’s health, safety, and well-being in a particular child-care setting. Like it or not, the buck stops with you. That’s why you owe it to yourself and your child to read books like this one that show you how to be a savvy day-care consumer.
