Book excerpt: Six Great Artesian Basin discharge spring complexes were monitored following the recommended guidelines (Fensham & Fairfax 2009*) and results indicate that there may have been increases in extent of some springs when comparing satellite imagery from 2008 with 2011 on-ground mapped extent. Results of macroinvertebrate surveys and sampling for the presence of and damage by alien species (pigs and mosquitofish) in spring habitats have shown that threats other than water resource development are likely to be as important for management of Great Artesian Basin spring ecosystems.

Book excerpt: The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) is the largest artesian, fresh groundwater source in the world, and the GAB mound springs are one of the rarest landforms in Australia. Characterisation of the artesian springs and identifying their source aquifers in the south-east area of the GAB is hindered by a shortage of data, which limits understanding of the hydrogeological setting. It is critically important to manage the groundwater within the GAB, as the springs are the lifeblood of unique endemic flora and fauna, hold significant cultural values to the indigenous people and are linked with aquifers that are drawn upon by local pastoral stations. -- This study is based on field investigations using environmental tracers of artesian springs and proximate bores and the collation of other existing hydrochemistry datasets and hydrogeological information. The study findings showed that the variability and complexity of hydrogeology across the south-east GAB, the multi-aquifer units and structural architecture such as faults impede groundwater flow and the spring expressions at the surface. Outcomes from this study demonstrate the fundamental need for integrating new knowledge from field investigations with existing datasets to help constrain complex hydrogeological conceptual models. Additionally, this study makes the case that a multi-tracer approach from springs and proximate bores together with geological information provides a hydrogeological tool-box to investigate complex groundwater systems with multi-layered aquifer systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on water quality and other environmental issues are being collected at an ever-increasing rate. In the past, however, the techniques used by scientists to interpret this data have not progressed as quickly. This is a book of modern statistical methods for analysis of practical problems in water quality and water resources. The last fifteen years have seen major advances in the fields of exploratory data analysis (EDA) and robust statistical methods. The 'real-life' characteristics of environmental data tend to drive analysis towards the use of these methods. These advances are presented in a practical and relevant format. Alternate methods are compared, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each as applied to environmental data. Techniques for trend analysis and dealing with water below the detection limit are topics covered, which are of great interest to consultants in water-quality and hydrology, scientists in state, provincial and federal water resources, and geological survey agencies. The practising water resources scientist will find the worked examples using actual field data from case studies of environmental problems, of real value. Exercises at the end of each chapter enable the mechanics of the methodological process to be fully understood, with data sets included on diskette for easy use. The result is a book that is both up-to-date and immediately relevant to ongoing work in the environmental and water sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is the world's driest inhabited continent. Water is our limiting resource. It might therefore be thought that our water resources would be the subject of the most intensive study. Certain aspects, it must be conceded, have received much attention, notably the availability of water in terms of actual quantity. The size of the surface water and the groundwater resource is well understood and indeed receives about as much study as can reasonably be expected in a country with as sparse a population and level of scientific manpower as ours. Although the importance of understanding the water resource in terms of quantity is widely accepted, what has not been generally appreciated is that for this resource to be 'available' to human society for all the different uses to which it is put, it is not sufficient that there exists within easy reach of the end users a certain total volume of water. For that water to fulfil its functions-for agriculture, industry, the home, recreation, biological conservation-it must be in a certain state: it must conform to certain chemical, physical and biological criteria, and what has not been sufficiently appreciated in Australian society is that the condition a water is in depends very much on the ecology of the waterbody in which it resides. There are waterbodies in the world, for example high-altitude glacial lakes, which are naturally so pristine that their water could be used for any purpose without treatment.
