And what price do Black women pay for it? In this book, the author, a psychologist and pastoral theologian, examines the burdensome yoke that the ideology of the Strong Black Woman places upon African American women. She demonstrates how the three core features of the ideology--emotional strength, caregiving, and independence--constrain the lives of African American women and predispose them to physical and emotional health problems, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and anxiety. She traces the historical, social, and theological influences that resulted in the evolution and maintenance of the Strong Black Woman, including the Christian church, R & B and hip-hop artists, and popular television and film. Drawing upon womanist pastoral theology and twelve-step philosophy, she calls upon pastoral caregivers to aid in the healing of African American women's identities and crafts a twelve-step program for Strong Black Women in recovery.

From this fairytale beginning, three resolutions are made -- one sister walks one way to find purpose, one the other to find adventure, and the third stays right where she is, to create a home. Years later, having circled a globe and fought vikings, toppled lighthouses, tamed wilds and achieved greatness, the three meet again, as women.A moving and irresistibly charming modern-day fable for young and old, this is a story born first as a play, and staged by 33 companies in five countries and four languages.Praise for the play:'This Girl Laughs follows in the best tradition of fairytales through the ages - an engagingly told yarn for the children of today, with lessons for adults also' - Artshub'The most important thing is always the telling of the story - children demand imagination and clarity while adults deserve it. By that measure, and plenty of others beside, This Girl Laughs succeeds admirably' - The West Australian'Finegan Kruckemeyer just might be Australia's Tim Burton (the highest compliment I could ever pay anyone) and this is a story that has the potential to be timeless like some of Burton's masterpieces' - Colosoul'Somewhere between hilarious and human' - Luca (aged 9), Big Kids MagazinePraise for Kruckemeyer's other works:'Like a daydream born beneath a dining-room table' - The Irish Times'Like a beautiful children's book, a treasured bedtime story with illustrations which come to life before our eyes' - The Advertiser, Australia***** 'So achingly magical and charming, so full of whimsicality and merry eccentricity that when the reality begins to strike home... those with iron self-control will just swallow very hard. The rest of us will try to forage quietly for a hankie... A marvel of exquisite theatre-craft' - The Herald, Scotland'Not only works, it wows' - New York Post

Book excerpt: “The enchanting saga of two Irish sisters…This new chapter of Titanic lore is worth plunging into.” —Publishers Weekly From the acclaimed author of The Girls of Ennismore comes a captivating and extraordinary tale of perseverance and bravery. This touching saga of sisterhood—perfect for fans of Fiona Davis and Marie Benedict—follows two young Irish women yearning for independence and adventure, as they set sail on RMS Titanic—the “ship of dreams”—only to be faced with the tragedy of that fabled maiden voyage… Delia Sweeney has always been unlike her older sister--fair and delicate compared to tall, statuesque Nora, whose hair is as dark as Donegal turf. In other ways too, the sisters are leagues apart. Nora is her mother's darling, favored at every turn, and expected to marry into wealth. Delia, constantly slighted, finds a measure of happiness helping her da on the farm. The rest of the time, she reads about far-off places that seem sure to remain a fantasy. Until the day a letter arrives from America . . . A distant relative has provided the means for Delia and Nora to go to New York. Delia will be a lowly maid in a modest household, while Nora will be governess for a well-to-do family. In Queenstown, Cork, they board the Titanic, a majestic new ocean liner making its maiden voyage. Any hope Delia carried that she and her sister might become closer during the trip soon vanishes. For there are far greater perils to contend with as the ship makes its way across the Atlantic . . . In the wake of that fateful journey, Delia makes an impulsive choice--and takes Nora's place as governess. Her decision sparks an adventure that leads her from Fifth Avenue to Dallas, Texas, where oilfields bring unimagined riches to some, despair to others. Delia grows close to her vulnerable young charge, and to the girl's father. But her deception will have repercussions impossible to foresee, even as it brings happiness within reach for the first time . . .

Book excerpt: Parents, young people, community organizers, and educators describe how they are fighting systemic racism in schools by building a new intersectional educational justice movement. Illuminating the struggles and triumphs of the emerging educational justice movement, this anthology tells the stories of how black and brown parents, students, educators, and their allies are fighting back against systemic inequities and the mistreatment of children of color in low-income communities. It offers a social justice alternative to the corporate reform movement that seeks to privatize public education through expanding charter schools and voucher programs. To address the systemic racism in our education system and in the broader society, the contributors argue that what is needed is a movement led by those most affected by injustice--students of color and their parents--that builds alliances across sectors and with other social justice movements addressing immigration, LGBTQ rights, labor rights, and the school-to-prison pipeline. Representing a diverse range of social justice organizations from across the US, including the Chicago Teachers Union and the Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network, the essayists recount their journeys to movement building and offer practical organizing strategies and community-based alternatives to traditional education reform and privatization schemes. Lift Us Up! will outrage, inform, and mobilize parents, educators, and concerned citizens about what is wrong in American schools today and how activists are fighting for and achieving change.

The Dreaming is not just a collection of lore or a long-ago time; it is a living energy that flows constantly through the universe. It is then and now, divine and human, spirit and law. Because the spiritual energy is as vibrant today as ever, these ancient stories show us how to survive in a harsh world and how to thrive in our souls. McRaven, and Own the Day, Own Your Life by Aubrey Marcus. Excerpts from this book have been published in spiritual, literary, and inspirational magazines and newsletters, and have been honored with a women’s inspiration award. Laine Cunningham’s understanding of Aboriginal culture began during a six-month solo journey through the Australian Outback. The same visions that drew her into the red desert also told her that she would die there. A miraculous connection to divine energy saved her life and launched her along the path she follows to this day. "The fact that Laine Cunningham spent six long months on her own in the Australian outback before writing this book gave a rich authenticity to her voice as she shared from her abundantly full, and talented, heart." Leah Griffith, Award-winning Author Cosette's Tribe "Loved it! The traditional Aboriginal stories are fascinating reads. From reading Laine's book, it's easy to feel the sacredness in the Aboriginal culture. I hadn't felt this moved by Aboriginal spirituality since viewing Oprah Winfrey's visit to Australia's Uluru rock." Virginia Lathan "Well written and highly informative, Seven Sisters was even better than I'd hoped." C Laney, Author, Lessons from the Cockpit "Ever since Laine's first book on Australia, The Family Made of Dust, I have waited anxiously for her next creative work. Seven Sisters molded a deeper understanding of the indigenous concept of 'Dreamtime.' Laine has delicately represented a series of spiritual perspectives leading us to the core of the Aboriginal heart. With her insight, she must have been a native medicine woman in a previous life." Dale Stacy, Author, Diamond in the Rough "An intriguing look at the culture of Australia told through a rich oral history and passed down through the ages. The stories they tell are their way of explaining many mysteries of the universe and of life." Mary Blowers, Book Review Blog "As a teacher I can see this book being great for many audiences. I personally enjoyed the stories as a nice afternoon pleasure read. I can see the book as a whole being used with older children to help them learn to analyze text and younger children to help teach important life lessons." Robin Perron, Teacher "Seven Sisters is comprised of unique stories that have been passed down from generation to generation among the Australian Aborigines. The stories offer insights into another culture, each with a life lesson, and the author adds her own insights to each story." Shaman Elizabeth, Author with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies "I thought this book would be a quick read, but I found myself lingering, absorbing the message of each story before moving on to the next. I found this book to be both entertaining and informative, one I will probably reread quite a few times." Dena Harris, Award-winning Author, Who Moved My Mouse?

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Friendship, loyalty, and love lie at the heart of this beautifully written, poignant, and sweeping novel of five women who, over the course of four decades, come to redefine what it means to be family. “This generous and inventive book is a delight to read, an evocation of the power of friendship to sustain, encourage, and embolden us. Join the sisterhood!”—Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Book Club For thirty-five years, Frankie, Linda, Kath, Brett, and Ally have met every Wednesday at the park near their homes in Palo Alto, California. Defined when they first meet by what their husbands do, the young homemakers and mothers are far removed from the Summer of Love that has enveloped most of the Bay Area in 1967. These “Wednesday Sisters” seem to have little in common: Frankie is a timid transplant from Chicago, brutally blunt Linda is a remarkable athlete, Kath is a Kentucky debutante, quiet Ally has a secret, and quirky, ultra-intelligent Brett wears little white gloves with her miniskirts. But they are bonded by a shared love of both literature—Fitzgerald, Eliot, Austen, du Maurier, Plath, and Dickens–and the Miss America Pageant, which they watch together every year. As the years roll on and their children grow, the quintet forms a writers circle to express their hopes and dreams through poems, stories, and, eventually, books. Along the way, they experience history in the making: Vietnam, the race for the moon, and a women’s movement that challenges everything they have ever thought about themselves, while at the same time supporting one another through changes in their personal lives brought on by infidelity, longing, illness, failure, and success. Humorous and moving, The Wednesday Sisters is a literary feast for book lovers that earns a place among those popular works that honor the joyful, mysterious, unbreakable bonds between friends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book In this compelling novel, aging sisters dredge up the mystery of an old curse to prove they were rescued by Angels. This book was written for anyone with doubts or disbelief in the power of prayer or the existence of God. The author uses actual ancestors and loved ones as role models for the Angels she believes are real. Historical events and facts are based on actual records and research, but literary license was incorporated to turn once living humans into modern-day Angels. Are they real? What about Demons? In this book of good versus evil, the sisters work to prove the existence of Angels while Demons try to stop them. Who will win this battle for souls? Do ancestors play a role in the choices made by future generations? In this current age of racial, sexual, political, and religious conflict and tension, are we really all so different? Or is something else pulling our strings? About the Author Debra Ann Ristau is a historian who believes nonfiction be truthful and fiction should inspire, intrigue, and entertain. She hopes Fate of the Sisters does all three. After decades of writing nonfiction, she is thrilled to offer this book as the first of an exciting series that features Warrior Guardian Angels protecting us from evil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fathers, sons, and mothers take center stage in the Bibles grand narratives, Amy Kalmanofsky observes. Sisters and sisterhood receive less attention in scholarship but, she argues, play an important role in narratives, revealing anxieties related to desire, agency, and solidarity among women playing out (and playing against) their roles in a patrilineal society. Most often, she shows, sisters are destabilizing figures in narratives about family crisis, where property, patrimony, and the resilience of community boundaries are at risk. Kalmanofsky demonstrates that the particular role of sisters had important narrative effects, revealing previously underappreciated dynamics in Israelite society.
