The book compares these efforts and their results, and shows how grass-roots initiatives, alternative local movements and self-organizing urban collectives are reshaping the urban scene in dynamic, creative, innovative and empowering ways. It argues that such grass-roots initiatives are vital for generating a socially cohesive urban condition that exists alongside the official state-organized forms of urban governance. The book is thus a major contribution to socio-political literature, as it seeks to overcome the duality between community-development studies and strategies, and the solidarity-based making of a diverse society based upon the recognising and maintaining of citizenship rights. Book excerpt: Este libro es una investigación ambiciosa, mezcla de trama científica, literaria y filosófica, que emplea, por segunda vez, el método holofráctico de mi primera obra. El método holofráctico es un método recurrente que sirve como nexo de unión de las paradojas conceptuales. Está relacionado con la antigua dialéctica -específicamente el concepto de dialéctica de Hegel-, como un modo de enfrentarse a todos los aspectos opuestos y complementarios de las ideas mediante la tríada: tesis (como afirmación), antítesis (como negación) y síntesis (como negación de la negación). A estos tres momentos Hegel los denomina "unidad simple", "escisión u oposición" y "reconciliación o superación". De esta tríada deriva la dialéctica de la naturaleza expuesta por el marxismo (Marx-Engels), de la cual sobresalen tres leyes fundamentales: la ley del paso de la cantidad a la cualidad, la ley de la unidad e interdependencia de los contrarios y la ley de la negación de la negación, que corresponde al momento de síntesis de Hegel. Aunque intenta relacionarse con la dialéctica marxista y hegeliana, el método holofráctico pretende trascender sus límites, porque indaga sobre las nuevas teorías científicas y filosóficas de la complejidad, que me sirven de base para establecer un puente de unión entre las ciencias naturales y las ciencias culturales. El interés por una y otra ciencia condiciona un tipo de pensamiento complejo que incluye un nuevo marco epistemológico de gran relevancia, pues se ajusta a lo que marca el orden fractal. Esta nueva forma de expresión y exposición filosófica sigue un camino muy próximo a la teoría del pensamiento complejo de Edgar Morin, específicamente a los principios que, según él, ayudan a pensar la complejidad: el principio dialógico, el cual trata de usar conceptos antagónicos que a la vez se oponen y se complementan, una especie de pensamiento dialéctico, pero con el diálogo como instrumento fundamental de simbiosis entre dos lógicas; el principio de recursividad organizacional, que es un proceso recursivo de retroalimentación que se acerca a la dinámica no lineal o circular de los sistemas auto-organizativos; y el principio hologramático, por el cual el todo está en la parte y la parte en el todo, lo que trasciende las posiciones del conocimiento holístico, que se centra en el todo, y reduccionista, centrado en las partes. No obstante, mi método, a diferencia de la dialógica propuesta por Morin, no es meramente una interacción básica de contrarios, sino una superación dialéctica como comprensión del cambio de los sistemas complejos [...]. La organización fraccionaria de la obra constituye un tejido complejo donde se mezclan diversos principios duales del conocimiento, antiguo y moderno, dentro de una cierta unidad. Esta unidad se articula arquitectónicamente, es decir, en todos los niveles de la obra, hasta construir un todo de carácter sincrético que da origen a una nueva estructura. De esta forma se podrán vislumbrar las conexiones subyacentes de los conceptos que les hace tener un nuevo sentido o significado. Tal significado se puede descubrir por medio de un “nuevo lenguaje” de expresión filosófica, en términos del cual se pueden conectar las ideas y resolver de forma sencilla los problemas tradicionales más trascendentes. Ese lenguaje hace uso de un razonamiento por analogía, una de las características del pensamiento complejo. La analogía es una correlación o relación de semejanza establecida entre los diversos elementos de una realidad con los de otra, de modo que se puede extrapolar a una los términos de los de otra. Por ejemplo, la luz natural y la luz del conocimiento comparten un elemento común, la luz, que hace referencia a dos clases de realidad diferentes: una producida por un agente externo, como el Sol, y otra por un agente interno, como la luz del conocimiento. El hecho de tener partes en común y a la vez partes diferentes, hace que la analogía ocupe un lugar intermedio entre los términos unívocos y los equívocos. Los términos unívocos designan una cosa o concepto iguales. Sin embargo, los términos equívocos expresan cosas o conceptos distintos. Al estar entre la igualdad y la diferencia, la analogía equivale a una proporción entre el todo y la parte [...]. En cuanto al método del libro, configuro una trama de significación a través de una composición arquitectónica de muy diversas fuentes, en la que aparecen unificaciones duales en diferentes escalas. Para llevar acabo esta unificación del dualismo introduzco principios estéticos de simetría, en donde las nociones de proporción se conjugan con las de coherencia o armonía mediante el paso oscilante de unos términos a otros. El hecho de que ese ir y venir no exprese prioridad de un principio sobre otro, nos sugiere una percepción no lineal, circular o cíclica de la realidad, al igual que la observada en la dinámica dialéctica de los procesos naturales, en donde cada tríada (tesis, antítesis y síntesis) conforma un círculo, dentro del cual se inscriben otros subcírculos de tríadas dialécticas, y así sucesivamente. Por su índole dialógica, únicamente me interesa poner de manifiesto las relaciones de los diversos conceptos que giran en torno a las nociones de unidad y dualidad, complementariedad y oposición. Esto no quiere decir que todas las relaciones posibles de la realidad, las posibilidades plurales e incluso infinitas, sigan esta configuración básica y generalizada. Pese a no ser una verdad absoluta que permita explicarlo todo, este modelo simple de organización puede resultar útil a ciertos efectos, pues, por el hecho de superar las categorías cristalizadas conservadas por el individuo y la sociedad, provoca la fluidez y flexibilidad necesarias para superar las resistencias mentales y culturales de nuestro tiempo [...].
